TASK 72-00-50-020-003-C00 LPT Module - Remove The Turbine Exhaust Case (TEC) (Horizontal) - Method 2, Removal-004

General

Apply the approved penetrating oil before the removal of threaded parts. Let the parts soak before removal. For the approved oils and procedures, refer to SPM TASK 70-64-00-640-501.

Discard all rubber seal rings, cotter pins and keywashers removed in this procedure.

NOTE

Special tools are identified in the procedure by the tool primary number.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-164 Remove the Module Dressings

    1. NOTE

      If the compartment cover and the turbine blind cap are not installed, continue with Step.

      Remove the module dressings. Refer to TASK 72-00-50-020-001 (REMOVAL-001).

    2. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-165 Remove the No. 5 Bearing Compartment Cover

    1. Refer to Figure

    2. Remove the 13 bolts that attach the compartment cover to the exhaust case.

    3. Remove the No. 5 bearing shields.

    4. Make sure that the three jaws of the IAE 1P17038 Slide puller 1 off puller are in the outward position. Make sure that the three clamps are correctly engaged behind the flange at the compartment cover.

    5. Slide the ring over the three jaws to hold the jaws in position.

    6. Remove the knocker puller rearwards quickly to hit the handle.

    7. Do Step until the compartment cover is free from the exhaust case.

    8. Loosen the three screws. Move the three jaws until the compartment cover is free from the slide puller.

    3. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-166 Remove the Blind Cap of the LP Turbine Shaft

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Remove the internal retaining ring of the blind cap.

    3. Install the IAE 1P17039 Slide puller 1 off into the turbine shaft. Make sure that the guide of the slide puller is correctly aligned with the turbine shaft.

    4. Move the hammer forward until the head touches the blind cap. Push against the body of the slide puller until the jaws engage in to the groove of the blind cap.

    5. Move the hammer rearward quickly to hit the grip.

    6. Do Step until the blind cap is free from the turbine shaft.

    7. Remove the slide puller and the blind cap from the LP turbine shaft.

    8. Release the head of the slide puller and remove the blind cap.

    9. CAUTION

      DO NOT DAMAGE THE SURFACE OF THE BLIND CAP SLOT WITH THE HAND TOOLS WHEN YOU REMOVE THE SEALING RING. DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE CAN CAUSE AN OIL LEAK.

      NOTE

      If the removal of the No. 5 bearing inner-race and the No. 5 bearing seal spacers is necessary continue with Step.

      Remove and discard the sealing ring from the blind cap.

    4. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-167 Remove the Rear Lock Nut

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Disengage the retaining ring from the rear lock nut. Remove the retaining ring with the locking ring from the rear lock nut.

    3. Attach the IAE 1P16374 Wrench support 1 off to the inner rear flange of the TEC.

    4. Install the IAE 1F10038 Torque wrench 1 off through the wrench support. Engage the torque wrench with the rear lock nut of the LP turbine shaft.

    5. Install the IAE 1F10039 Anti-torque adapter 1 off through the torque wrench. Lock the anti-torque adapter to the LP turbine shaft.

    6. Install the IAE 1F10016 Mechanical wrench 1 off to the torque wrench. Safety the anti-torque adapter to the mechanical wrench with the IAE 1F10040 Anchor wrench plate 1 off.

    7. Operate the mechanical wrench to release the rear lock nut.

      8. Remove the tools from the engine as follows:

      1. Remove the anchor wrench plate and the mechanical wrench.

      2. Disengage the lock mechanism of the anti-torque adapter and remove the adapter.

      3. Remove the torque wrench.

      4. Remove the wrench support.

    9. Remove the rear lock nut of the LP turbine shaft.

    5. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-168 Disconnect the No. 5 Bearing Pressure Tube Assembly

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Remove the two nuts and bolts which attach the bracket to the No. 5 bearing pressure tube and to the inner support of the turbine exhaust case.

    3. Remove the nuts, the bolt and two washers which attach the bracket to the tube heatshield. Remove the bracket.

    4. Remove the two nuts and two bolts which attach the bracket to the external flange of the turbine exhaust case.

    5. Remove the nut and bolt which attach the bracket to the clamp and loop support. Remove the bracket.

    6. Loosen the coupling nut and remove the pressure tube.

    6. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-169 Remove the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Remove the nipple and packing from the No. 5 bearing compartment. Discard the packing.

    3. Remove the two bolts and key washers which attach the No. 5 Bearing Packing Transfer Tube to the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle.

    4. Install the IAE 1P16624 Slide Puller 1 off into No. 5 Bearing Packing Transfer Tube.

    5. Move the knocker puller rearwards quickly and hit the handle to remove the No. 5 Bearing Packing Transfer Tube from the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle.

    6. Remove the No. 5 Bearing Packing Transfer Tube and the three packings from the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle. Discard the packings.

    7. Remove the two bolts which attach the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle.

    8. Remove the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle and packing. Discard the packing.

    7. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-170 Install the Guide Support to the LP Turbine Shaft

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Install the IAE 1P16377 Guide support 1 off into the inner diameter of the LP turbine shaft. Use an applicable webbing sling.

    3. Make sure that the centering diameter of the guide support is installed correctly in the LP turbine shaft. Turn the screw clockwise at the rear end of the guide support to hold the guide support to the LP turbine shaft.

    4. Put the IAE 1F10075 Support pedestal 1 off below the guide support. Move the support pedestal A near the rear flange of the TEC. Turn the handwheel A until the pedestal-screw touches the guide support. Lock the pedestal-screw in that position with the handwheel B.

    8. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-171 Install the Remove/Installation Fixture to the TEC

      NOTE

      Make sure that the jack screw of the IAE 1F10073 remove/installation fixture 1 off is in the rear position.

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Attach the hoist equipment to the upper supports of the remove/installation fixture.

    3. Install the remove/installation fixture on the guide support. Move the remove/installation fixture forward near the support pedestal A.

    4. Put the IAE 1F10075 Support pedestal 1 off below the rear end of the guide support. Refer to Step.

    5. Remove the support pedestal A near the rear flange of the TEC.

    6. Move the remove/installation fixture against the rear flange of the TEC. Align the holes. Attach the remove/installation fixture with the 13 bolts and washers. Tighten the bolts.

    7. Remove the hoist equipment.

    9. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-172 Remove the TEC from the LP Turbine Case

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Attach the electronic balance scale to the hoist equipment. Attach the IAE 1F10051 Two cable sling 1 off to the balance scale. Connect the two cable sling to the front two spools, part of the IAE 1F10073 remove/installation fixture 1 off.

    3. Take the weight on the crane until the balance scale shows the value of approximately 815 lb (370 kg).

    4. CAUTION

      MAKE SURE THAT THE BALANCE SCALE REMAINS AT THE INDICATED WEIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 815 LB (370 KG).

      Release the handwheel B of the support pedestal B. Turn the handwheel A. Make sure that the pedestal-screw touches the guide support. Take the weight of the LP turbine rotor. Lock with the handhweel B.

    5. CAUTION

      HOLD THE BOLTS IN THEIR POSITION WHEN YOU LOOSEN AND REMOVE THE NUTS FROM THE BOLTS. DO NOT TURN THE BOLTS OR MAKE TO-AND-FRO MOVEMENTS. THE LP TURBINE CASE/TURBINE EXHAUST CASE FLANGE AND/OR THE BOLTS CAN BE DAMAGED.

      Remove the 114 bolts, washers, nuts and 16 brackets from the TEC and from the LP turbine case.

    6. NOTE

      Control the weight increase on the balance scale of the LP turbine rotor which remains on the guide support.

      Turn the jack screw (part of remove/installation fixture) clockwise until the TEC and the LP turbine case are disconnected. Make sure that the carbon seal and the inner/outer races of No. 5 bearing are disengaged.

    7. If the balance scale shows a weight increase, release the handwheel B of the support pedestal B. Turn the handwheel A until the balance scale shows the initial value of approximately 815 lb (370 kg).

    8. Move the TEC carefully to the rear of the guide pogo stick near the support pedestal B.

    10. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-173 Install the Supporting Fixture

      NOTE

      Measure the inner hub diameter of Stage 7 Disk before you install the supporting fixture.

      NOTE

      If the inner hub diameter is 12.595 in. (319.9 mm) use IAE 1M14143 Support fixture
      If the inner hub diameter is 12.441 in. (316 mm) use IAE 1M14461 Supporting fixture

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Install the IAE 1M14143 Support fixture or the IAE 1M14461 Supporting fixture 1 off at the 12 o'clock position to the rear flange of the LP turbine case. Attach the supporting fixture with the four screws and washers. Tighten the bolts.

    3. Attach the two clamps with the hand knobs to the stage 7 turbine disk.

    11. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-174 Remove the TEC and the Guide Support

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Put the IAE 1F10075 Support pedestal 1 off below the guide support near the rear flange of the LP turbine case. Refer to Step.

    3. Remove the support pedestal B from the rear end of the guide support.

    4. Remove the TEC from the guide support. Install the TEC on the IAE 1F10178 Storage and Turnover adapter 1 off.

    5. Remove the support pedestal A.

    6. Release and remove the guide support from the LP turbine shaft. Use an applicable webbing sling.

    7. Remove the two cables sling from the balance scale.

    8. Remove the balance scale from the hoist equipment.

    12. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-175-A00 Remove the No. 5 Bearing and the No. 5 Bearing Seal and Spacers (Pre SBE 72-0165)

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Make sure that the rear lock nut is removed. Install the IAE 1F10035 Hydraulic Removal puller 1 off to the rear face of the LP turbine shaft. Engage the jaws of the puller with the grooves of the rear No.5 bearing seal spacer.

    3. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the puller.

    4. Operate the hydraulic pump until the inner race and the seal spacer are free of the LP shaft. Remove the front seal spacers.

    5. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the puller.

    6. Release the jaws of the puller and remove the No. 5 bearing inner race and the seal spacer.

    7. Remove the seal from the LP turbine shaft.

    8. Remove the seal spacer from the LP turbine shaft.

    13. SUBTASK 72-00-50-020-175-B00 Remove the No. 5 Bearing and the No. 5 Bearing Seal and spacers (SBE 72-0165)

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Make sure that the rear lock nut is removed. Install the IAE 1F10035 Hydraulic Removal puller 1 off to the rear face of the LP turbine shaft. Engage the jaws of the puller with the grooves of the rear No.5 bearing seal spacer.

    3. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the puller.

    4. Operate the hydraulic pump until the inner race and the seal spacer are free of the LP turbine shaft.

    5. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the puller.

    6. Release the jaws of the puller and remove the No. 5 bearing inner race and the seal spacer.

    7. Remove the seal from the LP turbine shaft.

    8. Remove the seal spacer from the LP turbine shaft.
