WARNING

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. THESE CONTAIN INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-13-300-005 Aqueous Degrease the Component

    2. If there is loose or powdery soil on the part, use a high pressure water spray unit to remove the loose or powdery soil from the part. Refer to SPM TASK 70-10-00-100-501 for high-pressure water spray unit (power washer) information.

    3. If there is grease or oil on the component, degrease the component by SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-13-300-001 Soak the Component in Alkaline Rust Remover

      1. CAUTION

LOW ALLOY STEELS (FOR EXAMPLE, STEEL SHAFTS), MUST BE RESTRICTED TO A MAXIMUM OF 20 MINUTES IMMERSION IN ALKALINE DERUSTER SOLUTION TO AVOID DISCOLOURATION. RE-IMMERSION IS PERMISSIBLE FOR FURTHER 20 MINUTE PERIODS AFTER WATER WASHING.

Soak the component in one of the alkaline rust remover solutions in the subsequent list (refer to SPM TASK 70-11-13-100-501) at the specified temperature for the specified time:

      2. Solution Code 20 at 190 deg F to 200 deg F (88 deg C to 93 deg C) for 30 to 60 minutes.

      3. Solution Code 23 at 190 deg F to 200 deg F (88 deg C to 93 deg C) for 30 to 60 minutes.

      4. Solution Code 24 at 190 deg F to 200 deg F (88 deg C to 93 deg C) for 30 to 60 minutes.

      5. Solution Code 25 at 190 deg F to 200 deg F (88 deg C to 93 deg C) for 30 to 60 minutes.

      6. Solution Code 97 at 190 deg F to 200 deg F (88 deg C to 93 deg C) for 30 to 60 minutes.

      7. Solution Code 175 at 185 deg F to 195 deg F (85 deg C to 95 deg C) for 15 to 30 minutes.

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-13-300-002 Flush the Component with Cold Water

    2. Remove the component from the alkali tank. Use a cold water spray to flush the alkaline solution from the component. Do this over the tank.

    3. Pressure spray rinse to remove scale, corrosion, and oxides.

    4. Put the component fully in a cold water tank.

    5. Remove the component from the cold water tank and then use cold water spray to flush the component again.

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-13-300-006 Inspection of the Component

      1. Do an inspection of the component to make sure that the component is clean. If the part is not sufficiently clean for inspection, then do this procedure:

      2. CAUTION

IT IS PERMITTED TO DO THIS PROCEDURE (SPM TASK 70-11-13-300-503) A MAXIMUM OF TWO TIMES DURING EACH SHOP VISIT. IF YOU DO THIS PROCEDURE MORE THAN TWO TIMES DURING EACH SHOP VISIT, TOO MUCH STOCK LOSS CAN OCCUR.

If the component is not clean, use a Nylon brush, a Tampico brush, a CoMat 05-125 ABRASIVE PAD, SILICON CARBIDE, ULTRA-FINE, or a CoMat 05-126 ABRASIVE PAD, ALUMINUM OXIDE, VERY FINE to clean the part surfaces that are not clean.

      3. If the part continues to be not sufficiently clean after you use the brush or scrub pad to clean the part, then it is permitted to do this procedure SPM (TASK 70-11-13-300-503) again, one time only.

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-13-300-003 Flash Dry the Component with Hot Water

    2. Put the component fully in hot water at a temperature of 150 deg F to 200 deg F (66 deg C to 93 deg C) until the temperature of the component is at the water temperature.

    3. Remove the component from the hot water and flash dry.

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-13-300-004 Prevent Corrosion of Component

    2. Apply a corrosion inhibitor, as necessary. Refer to SPM TASK 70-38-37-300-503.
