TASK 70-11-35-110-501 Protection Of Coatings During Processing

General

This procedure gives the instructions to apply a rubber mask for the protection of electro-plate and sprayed-metal coatings during chemical procedures.

NOTE

The procedure must be applied carefully to make sure that there are no holes in the mask.
If the solution gets into the mask during the procedure the coating must be replaced.
The procedure must not be used for soft abrasive compressor or oil seal linings.

This procedure must only be applied when recommended in the Engine Manual.

CoMat 02-145 STOPPING-OFF COMPOUND (which can be brush or soak applied) is supplied with a viscosity of 33 to 44 poise. During use the viscosity will slowly decrease as the solvent goes out of the compound as a gas. The compound can be made thinner again with CoMat 01-128 TOLUENE C6H5CH3 to get the initial viscosity.

During use, the viscosity of CoMat 03-332 STOPPING-OFF COMPOUND, will slowly decrease as the solvent comes out of the compound as a gas. The compound can be made thinner again with CoMat 03-339 THINNER.

For safety precautions see also to the SPM TASK 70-11-00-110-501.

WARNING

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO OBTAIN AND OBSERVE THE MANUFACTURERS MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIALS INFORMATION SUCH AS, HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES AND ALSO TO TAKE LOCAL REGULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION.

WARNING

DO NOT LET THE SOLUTIONS TOUCH THE SKIN FREQUENTLY, OR FOR A LONG TIME. THE OPERATORS MUST ALWAYS WEAR THIN GLOVES, WHICH CAN BE DISCARDED AFTER USE.

WARNING

STOPPING-OFF COMPOUND CONTAINS TOLUENE AND IS FLAMMABLE (FLASH POINT 46.4 DEG F (8 DEG C)). KEEP IT AWAY FROM ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION. KEEP THE CONTAINER CLOSED, WHEN NOT IN USE. USE IN AN AREA WITH SUFFICIENT AIR, TO KEEP THE SOLVENT CONCENTRATION IN THE AIR AT LESS THAN 100 PPM. KEEP IN A COOL AREA, AWAY FROM OXIDIZING MATERIALS.

WARNING

IF THERE IS A SOLVENT FIRE USE A CARBON DIOXIDE, DRY CHEMICAL, OR FOAM-TYPE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

WARNING

THE EQUIPMENT MUST NOT BE INSTALLED NEAR OPEN FLAMES, OR HOT STEAM PIPES.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-35-110-001 Apply the Mask

      1. Remove the grease from the coating and the adjacent area. Refer to TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

      2. NOTE

It is important to use a clean cloth for each grease removal procedure. Also to make the cloth moist with liquid from a special container to prevent contamination of the remaining liquid.

Remove the grease from the necessary areas with a clean dry cloth made moist with the solvent. Discard the dirty cloth after use.

    2. NOTE

To make sure of constant results, fully mix the CoMat 02-145 STOPPING-OFF COMPOUND before each coating is applied.

Use CoMat 02-002 ADHESIVE TAPE GENERALPURPOSE PAPER to apply a mask to an area; which is less than 0.118 in. (3 mm) from the electro-plate or sprayed-metal coating.

    3. Brush or soak apply a smooth coating of the stopping-off compound, then air dry for 30 minutes. Make an overlap on to the adjacent area where a mask is not applied.

    4. Apply a second coating of the stopping-off compound, then air dry for 30 minutes again.

    5. Make sure that the coating is constant and without holes.

    6. Apply a third coating of the stopping-off compound to fill all the small holes, then air dry for two hours.

    7. Remove the general purpose paper masking tape.

    8. Let the stopping-off compound dry for 12 hours.

    9. NOTE

Be very careful during the procedure not to cause damage to the stopping-off compound mask. If the solution gets through the mask the coating must be replaced.

The procedure can then be applied to the part as recommended in the Engine Manual.

    10. When the Engine Manual procedure to clean is completed, the coating can be removed before the part is fully dried or put into oil. A tufnal scraper can be used to help with the removal. Alternatively, a knife can be used to lift the edge of the mask. Be very careful not to cause scratches on the part.

    11. If the mask is so damaged that its removal is not easy, the remaining rubber can be removed by the procedure specified in the SPM TASK 70-11-04-300-503. Alternatively, CoMat 02-145 STOPPING-OFF COMPOUND can be removed from small parts, soak the parts in CoMat 01-128 TOLUENE C6H5CH3.
