TASK 70-11-35-110-501 Protection Of Coatings During Processing
General
This procedure gives the instructions to apply a rubber mask for the protection of electro-plate and sprayed-metal coatings during chemical procedures.
NOTE
This procedure must only be applied when recommended in the Engine Manual.
CoMat 02-145 STOPPING-OFF COMPOUND (which can be brush or soak applied) is supplied with a viscosity of 33 to 44 poise. During use the viscosity will slowly decrease as the solvent goes out of the compound as a gas. The compound can be made thinner again with CoMat 01-128 TOLUENE C6H5CH3 to get the initial viscosity.
During use, the viscosity of CoMat 03-332 STOPPING-OFF COMPOUND, will slowly decrease as the solvent comes out of the compound as a gas. The compound can be made thinner again with CoMat 03-339 THINNER.
For safety precautions see also to the SPM TASK 70-11-00-110-501.

Procedure
NOTE
It is important to use a clean cloth for each grease removal procedure. Also to make the cloth moist with liquid from a special container to prevent contamination of the remaining liquid.Remove the grease from the necessary areas with a clean dry cloth made moist with the solvent. Discard the dirty cloth after use.
Remove the grease from the coating and the adjacent area. Refer to TASK 70-11-26-300-503.
NOTE
To make sure of constant results, fully mix the CoMat 02-145 STOPPING-OFF COMPOUND before each coating is applied.Use CoMat 02-002 ADHESIVE TAPE GENERALPURPOSE PAPER to apply a mask to an area; which is less than 0.118 in. (3 mm) from the electro-plate or sprayed-metal coating.
When the Engine Manual procedure to clean is completed, the coating can be removed before the part is fully dried or put into oil. A tufnal scraper can be used to help with the removal. Alternatively, a knife can be used to lift the edge of the mask. Be very careful not to cause scratches on the part.
If the mask is so damaged that its removal is not easy, the remaining rubber can be removed by the procedure specified in the SPM TASK 70-11-04-300-503. Alternatively, CoMat 02-145 STOPPING-OFF COMPOUND can be removed from small parts, soak the parts in CoMat 01-128 TOLUENE C6H5CH3.
