TASK 70-11-50-300-503 Degrease The Exterior Of The Engine
Introduction
This procedure removes oil, grease, hydraulic fluid, and loose soil from engine exterior surfaces (that is, the outer surface of the engine) or external parts, which decreases the time necessary to clean disassembled Q. E. C. (Quick Engine Change) parts. You can can do this procedure by one of the subsequent subtasks:

Procedure
NOTE
Service experience shows that the gel-type cleaners are more effective than spray, steam, and foam solutions on very dirty engines because gel cleaners stay on the engine better than the spray, steam, and foam solutions, which drain off the engine during the soak time.Apply the alkaline cleaner by one of these methods:
CoMat 01-072 PRIMARY CLEANER: 30 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-300 ALKALI CLEANER (GENERAL PURPOSE) Alkali cleaner (general purpose): 30 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-339 ALKALI CLEANER (GENERAL PURPOSE): 25 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-340 ALKALI CLEANER (GENERAL PURPOSE) Alkali cleaner (general purpose): 25 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-421 CLEANER, ALKALI (GENERAL PURPOSE, LOW FOAM): 30 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-468 AQUEOUS CLEANER (LOW FOAM) Aqueous cleaner (low foam): 20 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-469 AQUEOUS DEGREASER: 25 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-480 AQUEOUS DEGREASER: 25 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-483 AQUEOUS DEGREASER: 20 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-488 AQUEOUS DEGREASER: 50 percent by volume.
CoMat 01-564 AQUEOUS DEGREASER: 25 percent by volume.
Apply as a spray, steam or foam a solution of one of these materials, mixed with water, at the maximum specified concentration:

WARNING
DO NOT USE A STEAM CLEANER TO APPLY THE GEL-TYPE CLEANER.NOTE
It is necessary to use a special applicator to apply the gel-type cleaners. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the correct applicator.Apply with a spray gun, CoMat 01-434 ALKALINE GEL CLEANER or CoMat 01-435 ALKALINE GEL CLEANERor CoMat 01-484 ALKALINE GEL CLEANER or CoMat 01-485 ALKALINE GEL CLEANER.
SUBTASK 70-11-50-300-001 Procedure to Clean the Exterior (Outside) Surfaces of the Engine (Method A)
Spray the surface with CoMat 01-459 AQUEOUS WIPE CLEANER and wipe with a clean lint free cloth. This CoMat is supplied in a spray applicator and is used as received. If necessary to remove the contamination, scrub with a soft non-metallic brush or, if the surface of the part cannot be damaged, with CoMat 05-125 ABRASIVE PAD, SILICON CARBIDE, ULTRA-FINE or CoMat 05-126 ABRASIVE PAD, ALUMINUM OXIDE, VERY FINE.

WARNING
THE SOLVENTS IN THE SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503 ARE FLAMMABLE. IF YOU USE THESE SOLVENTS ON HOT ENGINE PARTS, THERE WILL BE AN INCREASED RISK OF FIRE. LET THE TEMPERATURE OF THE PARTS DECREASE TO A TEMPERATURE AT WHICH YOU CAN TOUCH THE PARTS WITHOUT GLOVES BEFORE YOU APPLY THE SOLVENT.Apply the solvent from the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503 with a clean lint free cloth or a non-metallic brush. If necessary to remove the contamination, scrub the surface with a soft non-metallic brush or, if the surface of the part cannot be damaged, with CoMat 05-125 ABRASIVE PAD, SILICON CARBIDE, ULTRA-FINE or CoMat 05-126 ABRASIVE PAD, ALUMINUM OXIDE, VERY FINE.
Wipe dry with a clean cloth.
SUBTASK 70-11-50-300-002 Procedure to Locally Clean Exterior Surfaces of the Engine (Method B)

WARNING
THE SOLVENT USED IN THIS PROCEDURE IS FLAMMABLE. IF YOU USE THIS SOLVENT ON HOT ENGINE PARTS, THERE WILL BE AN INCREASED RISK OF FIRE. LET THE TEMPERATURE OF THE PARTS DECREASE TO A TEMPERATURE AT WHICH YOU CAN TOUCH THE PART WITHOUT GLOVES BEFORE YOU APPLY THE SOLVENT.When it is necessary to clean engine external component parts after the removal of the part from the engine, clean the parts by one of these procedures:
Step (Method B).
Clean with CoMat 10-061 STODDARD SOLVENT.
Wash the parts with CoMat 10-061 STODDARD SOLVENT. Use a brush and a solvent-recirculating parts washer or washer/soak tank.
Control the solvent by the SPM TASK 70-11-49-110-501 SUBTASK 70-11-49-180-008.
