Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-11-52-110-001 Carbon Removal Procedure

      1. CAUTION

DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE ON TUBES WITH ALUMINUM FITTINGS.

Heat the tube in an oven with an air atmosphere at 800 F to 900 F (427 C to 482 C) for approximately one hour.

      2. Put the tube in an approximately vertical position over a drain pan in the oven. For best results, keep the tube off the drain pan.

        NOTE

The vertical position lets the carbon material drain out of the tube during the bake cycle.
    2. Blow clean with air.

      1. Inspect with a borescope to be sure that all the carbon is removed. If there is remaining carbon, do the subsequent procedure:

        1. CAUTION

DO NOT USE WIRE BRUSHES TO REMOVE CARBON FROM TUBES. WIRE BRUSHES CAN CAUSE SCRATCHES THAT MAKE THE SURFACE ROUGH, WHICH INCREASES THE POSSIBILITY OF COKE FORMATION. ALSO, CRACKS CAN START AT THESE SCRATCHES, AND CAUSE FAILURE OF THE TUBE.

Do one of the subsequent procedures:

        2. Put a flexible rod through the tube.

        3. Dry plastic blast the tube. Refer to SPM TASK 70-12-07-120-501.

        4. Do the procedure again. Refer to Step.

      2. Blow clean with air. Do the borescope inspection again.
