TASK 70-12-07-120-501 Dry Plastic Blasting
General
This blasting process uses a dry plastic blast media. The procedure is used to remove graphite varnish, antigallant compound, paints, sealants or RTV rubber residue from compressor blades, drums, disks and hubs. The removal of large pieces of RTV with a sharp plastic scraper or razor will increase the efficiency of the blasting process.
IAE has found that suction machines are not as effective with plastic media and that pressure machines provide the best results.
Pressure machines with a conical cone design on the bottom of the pressure pot are more effective than machines with a round or flat bottomed pressure pot.
Air pressure greater than what is recommended in this procedure can cause premature breakdown of media and much dust. However, a very long hose can cause a pressure drop at the nozzle.
A worn nozzle reduces the effectivity of the process.
An incorrect blasting angle can reduce the efficiency of the process.
This procedure is recommended in place of the SPM TASK 70-11-04-300-503 for the removal of any remaining silicone rubber.

Procedure
Chemically clean the component before blasting. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.
SUBTASK 70-12-07-110-051 Degrease the Component
Blast with CoMat 05-067 PLASTIC BLAST MEDIA or CoMat 05-171 PLASTIC BLAST MEDIA or CoMat 05-172 PLASTIC BLAST MEDIA or PLASTIC BLAST MEDIA or CoMat 05-250 PLASTIC BLAST MEDIA. There must be a 3 in. to 4 in. (76 mm to 102 mm) nozzle-to-part distance at a 45 degree to 60 degree angle to the work surface.
SUBTASK 70-12-07-120-051 Abrasive Clean the Component

CAUTION
ALWAYS APPLY MASKING TAPE OR INSTALL THE SPECIAL GUARDS TO THE COMPONENT SURFACES WHICH ARE NOT TO BE BLASTED. DO THIS BEFORE YOU BLAST THE COMPONENT. MAKE SURE NO BLASTING MEDIA GOES INTO THE COMPONENT AND BECOMES CAUGHT.Preserve the parts in a corrosion preventive, as necessary. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-05-380-501.
