TASK 70-11-53-300-503 The Procedure To Remove Carbon With An Aqueous-Based Carbon Remover
General
This procedure uses an aqueous solution for immersion only. This procedure can be used on parts where SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503 Degreasing Parts by Aqueous Cleaning is currently assigned. Although this procedure is effective on all alloys titanium, steel, nickel and cobalt alloy parts are more effectively cleaned of carbon by SPM TASK 70-11-06-300-503 One-step Alkaline Rust Remover Cleaning for Titanium and SPM TASK 70-11-13-300-503 One-step Alkaline Rust Remover Cleaning for Cobalt and Nickel Base Alloys and Heat and Non-Corrosion Resistant Materials.
This procedure is not approved as an alternate to SPM TASK 70-11-22-300-503 the Procedure to Clean the Bearings (Alkaline Method) or SPM TASK 70-11-18-300-503 Cleaning, Lapping and Checking Carbon Seals.
To identify the consumable materials, refer to the Consumable Materials Index.

WARNING
Procedure
Put the part fully in Solution Code 191 aqueous carbon remover at 130 F - 140 F (54 C - 60 C) for 30 minutes to two hours.
Pressure spray rinse the part with a very fine spray over the solution tank.
NOTE
Use a very fine spray to keep the quantity of water added to the aqueous carbon remover to a minimum.Dip the part in cold water; then pressure spray rinse.
Put the part fully in Solution Code 191 aqueous carbon remover again at 130 F - 140 F (54 C - 60 C) for 30 minutes to two hours.
Pressure spray rinse the part with a very fine spray over the solution tank.
NOTE
Use a very fine spray to keep the quantity of water added to the aqueous carbon remover to a minimum.Dip the part in cold water; then pressure spray rinse.
If there is carbon remaining on the part, do the procedure that follows:
If the water on the part surface does not flash off when the part comes out of the hot water, then the time interval that the part stayed in the hot water was too short to increase the part temperature sufficiently.
Put the part fully in hot water at 150 F - 200 F (66 C - 93 C) until the temperature of the part increases sufficiently to flash dry.
Remove carbon with an aqueous carbon remover by the procedure that follows:
