Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-32-07-320-001 General

    2. Single-point machining and grinding are effective mechanical methods (procedures) for the removal of thermal spray coatings from parts.

    3. On some components it will be necessary to finish machine the coatings to obtain the necessary dimensions and the correct surface finish. For harder coatings, grinding will be necessary to remove stock to the finished dimensions.

    4. The table in Step gives the recommended grind or single-point machining methods to remove or finish thermal spray coatings.

      1. When you grind thermal spray coatings on titanium alloy parts, the grinding materials and parameters must also agree with the SPM TASK 70-32-06-320-501 Grinding of Titanium Parts.

        1. If you use diamond grinding wheels to grind thermal spray coatings on titanium alloy parts, it is necessary to subsequently grind by the SPM TASK 70-32-06-320-501 or machine all surfaces where the diamond wheel touches base material.

    5. In some instances, thermal spray coatings can be more easily and/or economically stripped or degraded by chemical stripping methods or by the SPM TASK 70-15-01-160-501 Stripping Coating by High Pressure Water Blasting.
