General

This TASK gives the procedure to do a test of a part surface for remaining nickel plate or electroless nickel plate.

This test is not destructive to the coating in the test area.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-33-04-200-001 Procedure for Test for Presence of Nickel Plate or Electroless Nickel Plate on a Part

    2. Clean a small 1 in. x 1 in. (25.4 mm x 25.4 mm) area of the part by the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503 solvent wipe method or with a CoMat 05-126 ABRASIVE PAD, ALUMINUM OXIDE, VERY FINE.

    3. Apply one drop of Solution Code 28 nitric acid solution to the cleaned area. Refer to SPM TASK 70-33-27-330-501, SUBTASK 70-33-27-180-004 for the solution make-up instructions.

    4. Wait approximately five to ten seconds, then blot the acid solution off the part with CoMat 02-192 FILTER PAPER. Keep the filter paper until this procedure is completed.

    5. Flush the acid solution from the test spot on the part.

    6. Apply one drop of Solution Code 181 dimethylglyoxime (DMGO) indicator solution to the acid spot on the filter paper. Refer to SPM TASK 70-33-27-330-501, SUBTASK 70-33-27-180-079 for the solution make-up instructions. A pink to red color will show the presence of nickel or electroless nickel plate.
