TASK 70-33-17-300-503 Procedure To Apply A Layer Of Black Oxide Finishing
General
This TASK gives the procedure to put a black oxide layer on the surfaces of a steel that is not stainless. This layer can keep oil in it, this gives the necessary protection to prevent corrosion. Do not use this TASK on the part unless specified in the applicable Engine Manual.

CAUTION
STEEL PARTS THAT HAVE A TENSILE STRENGTH OF MORE THAN 65 TON F/IN2 (1000 MN/M2) OR A HARDNESS OF 302 HB OR 310 HV MUST BE STRESS RELIEVED (BEFORE THE PICKLING PROCEDURE). THIS STRESS RELIEF HEAT TREATMENT IS DONE AT A TEMPERATURE OF 374 TO 410 DEG F (190 TO 210 DEG C) FOR ONE HOUR. AFTER THE PROCESS, PARTS WHICH NEEDED STRESS RELIEF MUST HAVE A DE-EMBRITTLEMENT HEAT TREATMENT AT A TEMPERATURE OF 374 TO 410 DEG F (190 TO 210 DEG C) FOR TWO HOURS. THIS PREVENTS CRACKS CAUSED BECAUSE OF HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT. IF DIFFERENT TIMES AND TEMPERATURES ARE NECESSARY THEY WILL BE SPECIFIED IN THE APPLICABLE ENGINE MANUAL. THE ENGINE MANUAL RECOMMENDS THE HEAT TREATMENT FOR PARTS THAT HAVE A TENSILE STRENGTH OF MORE THAN 90 TON F/IN2 (1384 MN/M2). BE CAREFUL WITH PARTS UNTIL DE-EMBRITTLEMENT IS COMPLETE. DE-EMBRITTLEMENT MUST BE DONE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE AFTER THE PROCEDURE IS COMPLETED.Clean the part to remove the grease, refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.
Put the part fully into the hydrochloric acid pickling solution (refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-17-100-501 SUBTASK 70-33-17-100-001 and SPM TASK 70-33-17-200-502 SUBTASK 70-33-17-200-001) at temperature of 59 to 77 deg F (15 to 25 deg C) for ten minutes, or the inhibited hydrochloric acid solutions refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-02-100-501 SUBTASK 70-33-02-300-001, para E(2)(c)). Do this unless the applicable Engine Manual gives different instructions.
Clean the part with CoMat 02-008 PUMICE POWDER to remove the possible inert layer.
Put the part fully into a 70g/l CoMat 01-030 SODIUM CARBONATE Na2CO3 solution, at a temperature of 59 to 77 deg F (15 to 25 deg C) for 30 to 60 seconds, or put the part fully into the heavy duty alkali cleaner solution (refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-02-100-501 SUBTASK 70-33-02-100-001) or the medium duty alkali cleaner solution (refer to SUBTASK 70-33-02-100-003) for 30 to 60 seconds. Do this to make the remaining acid neutral. This step is not necessary if the part is to be put fully into an alkali solution to clean it.
Put the part fully into CoMat 10-008 DEWATERING OIL (HOT) or CoMat 10-009 DEWATERING FLUID (COLD). Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-05-380-501.
Clean the part in vapor to remove the grease, refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.
If de-embrittlement heat treatment is necessary, do as follows.
SUBTASK 70-33-17-300-001 Remove the Used Black Oxide Layer
Clean the part, use the procedure given in the SPM TASK 70-11-14-300-503.
Clean the part to remove the grease, use the procedure given in the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.
Put the part fully into CoMat 10-008 DEWATERING OIL (HOT) or CoMat 10-009 DEWATERING FLUID (COLD) according to the manual rule.
SUBTASK 70-33-17-300-002 Apply the Black Oxide Layer (Immersion Method)
Put the part fully into CoMat 10-008 DEWATERING OIL (HOT) or CoMat 10-009 DEWATERING FLUID (COLD). Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-05-380-501.
If there is a white material on the dried part, do as follows.
SUBTASK 70-33-17-300-003 Examine the Layer of Black Oxide Finishing
Clean the part, use the procedure given in the SPM TASK 70-11-14-300-503.
Use a brush to apply CoMat 01-428 DILUTE AQUEOUS ACID SOLUTION on to the areas to be touched up.
Put the part fully into CoMat 10-008 DEWATERING OIL (HOT) or CoMat 10-009 DEWATERING FLUID (COLD) according to the manual rules.
SUBTASK 70-33-17-300-004 Touch-up the Black Oxide Solution (Touch-up Method)
