General

This TASK gives the procedure for the inspection of the roller bearing inner assembly. For the other parts of the internal gearbox driven gear assembly, refer to TASK 72-32-16-200-000 (INSPECTION-000).

All Fig/Item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC.

The policy that is necessary for inspection is given in the SPM TASK 70-20-01-200-501.

All the parts must be visually examined for damage, corrosion and wear. Any defects that are not identified in the procedure must be referred to IAE.

For data on the inspection and preservation of bearings, refer to the SPM TASK 70-29-01-290-501.

Do not discard any part until you are sure there are no repairs available. Refer to the instructions in repair before a discarded part is used again or oversize parts are installed.

Parts which should be discarded can be held although no repair is available. The repair of a discarded part could be shown to be necessary at a later date.

All the parts must be examined to make sure that all the repairs have been completed satisfactorily.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK numbers are in the SPM.

Bearings that are rejected must not be repaired if the cause is as follows:

They have become too hot because of a decrease of oil, the inner ring has turned on its hub, a compartment fire, or skidding.

Because of an engine failure.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-16-110-064 Clean the Roller Bearing (01-300 and 01-400)

    2. Clean the roller bearings. Refer to TASK 72-32-16-100-000 (CLEANING-000).

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-16-220-096 Visually Examine the Roller Bearings (01-300 and 01-400) for Surface Damage

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Visually examine, without magnification, the bearing and its components, checking in particular for defects as shown in the SPM TASK 70-29-01-290-501.

    4. Examine the oil holes on the parting faces of inner rings to make sure they are not blocked. Remove the blockage if necessary.

    5. Surface damage on the raceways of the inner rings is not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-16-220-097 Examine the Roller Bearing Outer Ring (01-400)

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Outer diameter at location 1.

        1. If the diameter is between 3.1494 and 3.1496 in. (79.993 and 80.000 mm)

        2. Accept

        1. If the diameter is less than 3.1494 in. (79.993 mm)

        2. Reject

      1. Inner diameter at location 2.

        1. If the diameter is between 2.8747 and 2.8750 in. (73.016 and 73.025 mm). Make a record of the measured diameter as "X".

        2. Accept

        1. If the diameter is more than 2.8750 in (73.025 mm)

        2. Reject

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-16-220-054 Examine the Roller Bearing Inner Assembly (01-300)

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Inner diameter at location 3.

        1. If the diameter is between 1.9683 and 1.9685 in. (49.994 and 50.000 mm)

        2. Accept

        1. If the diameter is more than 1.9685 in. (50.000 mm)

        2. Reject

    3. Measure the internal radial clearances at location 4 by using the outer roller bearing (01-400) which passes the dimensional inspection in accordance with Step, step 7. Make a record of the measured clearance as "Y".

      NOTE

Any outer roller bearing, which passes Step, step 7, may be used for this clearance inspection.
      1. Calculate the outer diameter "Z".

        Outer diameter Z = X - Y.

X: The measured inner diameter in Step, step 7.B.

Y: The measured radial clearance in Step, step 8.B.

        1. If Z is between 2.8731 and 2.8733 in. (72.975 and 72.984 mm)

        2. Accept

        1. If Z is less than 2.8731 in. (72.975 mm) or more than 2.8733 in. (72.984 mm)

        2. Reject

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-16-220-098 Hardness Test the Roller Bearing (01-300 and 01-400)

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the inner and outer roller bearings to see if they show signs that they have become too hot. Do the test on the side face at location H. Use arockwell A (HRA) tester or equivalent.

        1. If the hardness is between HRA 81.8 and 83.4

        2. Accept

        1. Out of the limits in Step.

        2. Reject

    3. Remove lifted metal.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-16-240-065 Demagnetize the Roller Bearing (01-300 and 01-400)

    2. Demagnetize the bearing. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-22-300-503.

    3. Examine the bearings for residual magnetism and if necessary demagnetize the parts again.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-16-620-055 Do the Preservation Procedure on the Roller Bearing (01-300 and 01-400)

    2. Do the applicable preservation procedure. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-29-01-290-501.
