Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-350-001 Remove the Carbon Seal Element

      1. Remove the carbon seal element from the face seal assembly.

      2. Repair, VRS3393 TASK 72-32-25-300-007 (REPAIR-007).

        NOTE

        If this repair was not previously performed, proceed to step 10. If this repair was previously performed, do steps 5. through 9.
    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-320-001 Remove the Bushings

      1. CAUTION

        DO NOT ENLARGE OR DAMAGE THE RIVET HOLE OR FACE AREA.

        Remove and discard the worn bushings.

      2. Drill the manufactured end of the rivets so that the remaining rivet piece can be punched out.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-220-114 Examine the Slot

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Do a dimensional inspection of the slot width.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-220-115 Examine the Rivet Holes

      1. Do an inspection of the rivet holes.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-39-03-390-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-350-002 Repair the Wear on the Slot Area

    2. If the slot area must be restored to repair wear or to get the correct position of the new bushings, do the following.

      1. If necessary, repair the slots

      2. Repair, VRS3546 TASK 72-32-25-300-026 (REPAIR-026)

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-350-003 Repair the Rivet Holes

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. If the rivet holes must be restored to repair wear or to get the correct position of the new bushings, do the following.

      1. If necessary, repair the rivet holes.

        1. Weld the rivet holes

        2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-31-13-310-016. Use CoMat 03-392 WELDING WIRE and the Manual Gas Tungsten Arc (GTAW-MA) method

        1. Do a stress relieve of the face seal assembly

        2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-37-07-370-501

      2. If necessary, machine/grind the welds flush at the rivet holes on both sides of the flange

        1. Do a fluorescent penetrant inspection of the face seal assembly

      3. Do a dimensional inspection of the carbon interface bore

        1. Clean the repair area

        2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-320-002 Machine the Slots and Flange Thickness

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    3. Machine the slots and flange thickness to accommodate the bushings at Locations F.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-350-004 Locally Fabricate Bushings

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Locally fabricate bushings from AMS 5613 material as follows.

    4. Heat treat the bushings.

    5. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-37-28-370-501.

    6. Hardness must be HRC 25-33 or equivalent.

    7. Refer to Figure.

    8. Unless otherwise specified, break edges 0.005 to 0.015 in. (0.13 to 0.38 mm).

    9. Unless otherwise specified, surface finish must be 125 microinch or equivalent.

    10. Do a fluorescent penetrant inspection of the bushing.

    11. Chrome plate area D to a thickness of 0.0005 to 0.0015 in. (0.013 to 0.038 mm). Bake at 735 to 765 deg F (391 deg C to 407 deg C) for two hours after plating.

    12. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-02-100-501. Dimensions are after plating.

    13. Plating is optional and can be incomplete in area E.

    14. Refer to Figure.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-110-084 Clean the Bushings

      1. Clean the locally fabricated bushings.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-350-005 Install the Bushings

      1. Position and clamp bushings in place at Locations F.

      2. If this repair was not previously performed, drill the bushing rivet holes into the bushings and the face seal assembly.

        1. If this repair was previously performed, transfer drill the bushing rivet holes from the face seal assembly to the bushings. Secure with rivets.

        2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-39-03-390-501

          NOTE

          It is permitted to exceed the edge distance requirements not more than 50 percent.
    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-220-116 Do an Inspection of the Bushings

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Do a dimensional inspection of the bushing locations.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-25-350-006 Install the Carbon Seal Element

      1. Install the carbon seal element to the face seal assembly.

      2. Repair, VRS3393 TASK 72-32-25-300-007 (REPAIR-007).
