This Step is an alternative to Step.

      NOTE

Take care not to damage the LP compressor front case.

      Remove the damaged abradable seal.

    4. Use a non-metallic scraper or similar.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-83-360-132-002 Remove the Damaged Abradable seal

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. NOTE

This Step is an alternative to Step.

        Remove the damaged abradable seal

      2. Use water blast jet. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-15-01-160-501. Make a test piece of AMS4132.

      1. Do a dimensional inspection

      2. Use IAEJ12792 inspection stand 1 off if necessary

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-83-220-242 Examine the Surface from which Silicon Rubber Compound are to be removed

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Fluorescent penetrant examine the surface where silicone rubber compound is removed.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-83-380-135 Apply Surface Protection to the LPC Case Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. NOTE

This Step must be done if the abradable seal is removed by Step. It is not necessary to do this Step if Step was done.

Apply the chromat conversion coating for aluminium with a brush to the surface where silicon rubber compound is removed.

    4. Use clean cold water and then dry air blast to dry the repaired area

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-83-120-077 Clean the Surface which are to be applied with Silicon Rubber Compound

      NOTE

After cleaning, the component must not be touched by hand and must be covered with the craft paper to prevent contamination.
    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Mask the areas which are not to be applied with silicon rubber compound.

    4. Dry abrasive blast the molding area.

    5. Use CoMat 05-038 SILICON CARBIDE ABRASIVE or CoMat 05-050 SILICON CARBIDE GRIT. Use a dry blast system cabinet with air pressure of 76.9 to 87.0 psi (530.21 to 599.84 kPa) at a minimum distance of 6 in. (152.4 mm) from the air nozzle to the component surface.

    6. Remove the abrasive grit that remains by vacuuming.

    7. Wipe the blasted surfaces.

    8. Air dry for 15 minutes minimum.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-83-360-136 Apply Primer to the Surfaces after Cleaning

    2. NOTE

The primed surface must have a pale pink color. If there is no color, the primer layer is not continuous. If the color is bright, streaky bright or chalky, the primer is to thick.
Keep the primer in a small container for single use only. Do not use the primer that remains.

Within eight hours after cleaning , prime the surface of the molding with a clean cloth and then immediately wipe off any excess primer with another clean cloth.

      1. The thickness of the primer layer must be 0.0001 in. (0.003 mm).

    3. Cure the primed surface. Refer to SPM TASK 70-36-06-360-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-83-360-137 Mold the Silicon Rubber Compound

    2. NOTE

The silicon rubber compound should be used within 12 months from data of manufacture when stored in its original, unopened container at temperatures below 90 deg F (32 deg C).

      Clean the molding fixture.

    3. Attach the component to the molding fixture.

    4. Put the gas free silicon rubber component into an injector.

    5. Use an injector (air pressure type).

    6. Inject the silicon rubber compound with the molding fixture attached into the component until the compound comes out of the vent port of the fixture.

    7. Injection pressure is 35.5 to 56.8 psi (245 to 392 kPa).

    8. Remove the injector.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-83-360-138 Cure the Silicon Rubber Compound

    2. Put the LP compressor front case assembly into an oven.

    3. Cure the compound.

    4. Cure for two hours at 291 to 309 deg F (144 to 154 deg C).

    5. Remove the component from the molding fixture.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-83-220-230 Examine the Repaired Area

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Visualy examine the repaired area.

      1. Cracks are not permitted.

      2. Foreign inclusion is not permitted.

      3. Peelings are not permitted.

      4. Bubbles are not permitted.

    4. Do a dimensional check of the molding diameter of the abradable seal. If necessary, grind the diameter of the abradable seal.

    5. Do a dimensional check of the excess abradable seal (Dim.H.). If necessary, remove the excess resin by using grinding equipment, cutter / knife and / or equivalent.

    6. If the Dim.H. height between the front liner surface of the LPC front case and the inner surface of the abradable seal is more than 0.019 in. (0.50 mm), blend abradable seal.

    7. Do a hardness check of the repaired area for equal spaced position on the circumference.

    8. Use a hardness tester (durometer).

    9. Hardness must be ASTM D2240 (durometer A) 70 - 80.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-83-220-231 Do a bond Test of the Repaired Area

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. NOTE

The bond test must be done after curing of the rubber compound.

Do a bond test of the repaired area.

      1. No signs of bulging or air leakage are permitted.

      2. Use for inspection air or nitrogen gas.

      3. Gas pressure must be 200 psi (1380 kPa).

      4. Change the inspection position as necessary to examine the not fully repaired areas.

      5. The probe angle is approximately 45 degrees.
