Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-93-330-051 Remove the Defective Rubber Cushion from the Front Fairing Assembly

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Inspect and identify the damaged rubber cushion.

      3. Remove the damaged rubber cushion without any damage to the parent material and remove the remaining compound.

    2. SUBTASK 72-32-93-360-051 Prepare the Mating Surfaces for the Cold Curing Silicon Rubber Compound

    1. Refer to Figure.

      2. Remove the grease from the mating surfaces.

      1. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

      3. Hand clean the mating surfaces.

    4. NOTE

      A water break test is not necessary.

      Do Step again.

    3. SUBTASK 72-32-93-350-051 Apply the Surface Protection to the Front Fairing

    1. Refer to Figure.

      2. Apply the chromate conversion coating to the repaired surfaces, if necessary.

    4. SUBTASK 72-32-93-360-052 Apply and Cure the Cold Curing Silicon Rubber Compound

    1. Refer to Figure.

      2. CAUTION

        DO NOT APPLY THE PRIMER TO THE MATING SURFACE OF THE RUBBER CUSHION, BECAUSE THE SILICON RUBBER IS WEAK IN BOND STRENGTH IF YOU APPLY THE PRIMER.

        CAUTION

        DO NOT EAT ANYTHING OR SMOKE AT THE LOCATIONS WHERE THESE MATERIALS ARE USED.
        AFTER PREPARATION, THE MATING SURFACES MUST BE FULLY CLEANED AND MUST NOT BE TOUCHED BY HAND, TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION.

        NOTE

        The primer must be applied immediately after the mating surfaces are prepared. It cures at room temperature when it comes into contact with moisture in the air.
        If the parts are not used immediately after the primer is applied, they must be kept in polythane bags, but for not longer than 24 hours.

        Apply a thin layer of primer only to the prepared mating surface of the front fairing. Dry in air for 30 minutes minimum.

      3. Apply the cold curing silicon rubber compound to each of the mating surfaces.

        1. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-36-02-360-501 step 23.D.

      4. Install the rubber cushion to the front fairing within three minutes after the compound is applied.

        1. Apply sufficient pressure to ensure good contact by hand.

        1. Make sure that the compound can be seen around the sealed surfaces.

      5. NOTE

        The parts can be handled carefully after 2 hours at room temperature.

        Cure the compound at 68 deg F (20 deg C) for 48 hours.

      1. Do not apply a load during this time.

    5. SUBTASK 72-32-93-220-056 Examine the Repaired Areas of the Front Fairing

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Dimensionally inspect the position of the repaired rubber cushion.

    3. Visually inspect the gapping and filling.
