General Data

This repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in 72-41-11 Inspection/Check.

This repair must only be done at the seal fin position which has four fins.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK number are in the Standard Practices and Processes Manual (SPM).

Before you use the materials, make sure the types, quantities and applications of the materials necessary are legally permitted in your location. All persons must obey all applicable federal, state, local and provincial laws and regulations when it is necessary to work with these materials.

  2. To identify the consumable materials, refer to the Overhaul Processes and Consumables Index (PCI).

  3. Other necessary consumable materials are referred to in the SPM TASKs.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-230-092 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test on the area to be repaired.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

        Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-325-051 Remove the Damage

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - YOU MUST USE SILICON CARBIDE TYPE ABRASIVE WHEELS, STONES AND PAPERS TO DRESS, BLEND AND POLISH THIS COMPONENT.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - DO NOT USE FORCE WITH MECHANICAL CUTTERS OR THE MATERIAL WILL BECOME TOO HOT.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - MAXIMUM SPEED FOR MECHANICAL TOOLS MUST NOT EXCEED 1000 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU REMOVE MATERIAL, BLEND AND POLISH, TO MAKE SMOOTH, THAT NO SPARKS ARE PRODUCED.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - IF THE MATERIAL SHOWS A CHANGE IN COLOR, TO DARKER THAN A LIGHT STRAW COLOR, THE COMPONENT IS TO BE REJECTED.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Machine to remove the damaged fin.

      2. Clamp the component to the faceplate of the lathe and set to turn correctly. Use the adjacent seal fin to check the concentricity.

        Remove sufficient material to remove damage. Do not machine in to seal fin land.

        Only one of the four seal fins can be fully removed.

        Use standard workshop equipment.

      1. Polish and remove burrs from the repaired area.

    3. Remove the component from the machine.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-110-090 Do a Swab Etch

      1. Chemically clean.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-001.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

      1. Swab etch the repair area.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-002.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-220-237 Binocular Examine

      1. Binocular examine the repair area.

      2. Use X10 binoculars.

        Indications of surface defects are not permitted.

        Make sure that there is no raised metal remaining.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-230-095 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test of the repair area.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

        No cracks are permitted.

        Use penetrant crack test equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-110-091 Chemically Clean

      1. Chemically clean the repair area to remove fluorescent penetrant.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-220-070 Examine the Seal Fin

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Do a dimensional inspection.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-350-052 Identify the Repair

    2. Refer to Figure.

      NOTE

      If the parts are already identified with VRS6122 from a repair that was done before, more identification is not necessary.
      1. Vibro-engrave VRS6122 adjacent to the part number.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501, SUBTASK 70-09-00-400-001.

        Use vibro-engraving equipment.
