This Repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in the relevant inspection procedures (identified by the applicable part number) located in section 72-41-11.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK numbers are in the Standard Practices and Manual (SPM).

If the damage are nicks, dents or scores the maximum depth of damage before material removal is 0.002 in. (0.051 mm) and you must remove damage to 2X depth to a maximum depth of 0.005 in. (0.127 mm)

If the damage is frettage the maximum depth of damage before material removal is 0.005 in. (0.127 mm) and you must remove damage to a maximum depth of 0.005 in. (0.127 mm).

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-230-064 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test on the area to be repaired.

      2. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-350-065 Remove the Damage

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - YOU MUST USE SILICON CARBIDE TYPE ABRASIVE WHEELS, STONES AND PAPERS TO DRESS, BLEND AND POLISH THIS COMPONENT.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - DO NOT USE FORCE WITH MECHANICAL CUTTERS OR THE MATERIAL WILL BECOME TOO HOT.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - MAXIMUM SPEED FOR MECHANICAL TOOLS MUST NOT EXCEED 1000 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU REMOVE MATERIAL, BLEND AND POLISH, TO MAKE SMOOTH, THAT NO SPARKS ARE PRODUCED.

      CAUTION

      TITANIUM COMPONENT - IF THE MATERIAL SHOWS A CHANGE IN COLOR, TO A DARKER THAN A LIGHT STRAW COLOR, THE COMPONENT IS TO BE REJECTED.
    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Remove small area(s) of damage as necessary.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501.

      3. The maximum depth to remove the damage must not be more than 0.005 in (0.13 mm).

      4. The repaired area(s) diameter is to be 50 times the depth.

        1. If material damage is frettage you must dress to depth to a maximum depth of 0.005 in. (0.127 mm).

        2. If material damage is nicks, dents or scores you must dress to 2X depth to a maximum depth of 0.005 in. (0.127 mm).

      1. Polish the area of repair.

      2. Polish the repaired area in a circumferential direction to give a surface finish the same as the adjacent material.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-110-096 Do a Swab Etch

      1. Chemically clean.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-001.

      1. Swab etch the repair area(s).

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-11-08-300-503, SUBTASK 70-11-08-300-002.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-220-243 Binocular Examine

      1. Binocular examine the repaired area.

      2. Use X10 binoculars.

      3. Indications of surface defects are not permitted.

      4. Make sure that there is no raised metal remaining.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-230-065 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test of the repaired area.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

      3. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-110-097 Chemically Clean

      1. Chemically clean the repaired area to remove fluorescent penetrant.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-220-244 Examine the Repair

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Do a dimensional inspection.

      2. Make sure the surface finish is the same as the adjacent material.

      3. The maximum depth of the repair must not be more than 0.005 in. (0.13 mm) and the diameter of the repair must not be more than 0.250 in. (6.35 mm).

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Vibro-engrave VRS6149 adjacent to the part number.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501 SUBTASK 70-09-00-400-001.

      3. NOTE

        If the HP Compressor Stage 3 to 8 Disks Shaft Assembly is already identified with the repair scheme number "VRS6149" from a previous repair application, further identification is not necessary.
