Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-110-071 Chemically Clean

      1. Chemically clean.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-41-13-100-000 (CLEANING-000).

      3. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-230-085 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a penetrant crack test.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        1. Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        2. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-324-051 Grind the HP Compressor Heatshield Assy

    2. CAUTION

      THE LOCALLY MADE GRINDING FIXTURE MUST HOLD THE HEATSHIELD ASSEMBLY RIGID AT BOTH ENDS DURING THE GRINDING OPERATION.

      Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Install the grinding fixture into the grinding machine.

      2. Use a locally made grinding fixture and agrinding machine with standard workshop equipment.

      1. Install the HP Compressor Heatshield Assembly into the grinding fixture and set to turn correctly.

      2. Use standard workshop equipment and a dial test indicator.

      3. Make sure datums A and B are set to turn correctly.

      1. NOTE

        Any metal spray coating that remains will be removed by the following SUBTASK, refer to Step

        Grind the HP Compressor Heatshield Assembly to remove most of the metal spray coating.

      2. Do not remove any parent material other than the metal sprayed coating.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-330-056 Chemically Remove the Metal Spray Coating that Remains

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Remove the metal spray coating that remains.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-59-300-503, SUBTASK 70-33-59-300-002.

      3. Use CoMat 01-025 NITRIC ACID HNO3, TECHNICAL GRADE with chemical cleaning equipment.

      4. Put the assembly into the nitric acid and keep below surface until the bubbles stop.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-220-148 Examine the Surface for Repair

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Visually examine.

      2. Make sure all the metal spray coating has been removed.

      3. If not, do Step again as necessary.

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test on the repaired area.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        1. Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        2. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-220-149 Examine the Surface for Repair

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Visually examine and measure the dimensions of the repaired surface.

        1. Use standard workshop equipment.

        2. The thickness of the repaired area must not be less than 0.027 in. (0.686 mm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-350-071 Seal the Surfaces Not to be Repaired

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Seal the surfaces not to be repaired.

      2. NOTE

        The adhesive tape (masking metal spray), permits the blasting and sprayed coating to be done in one operation.
    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-120-051 Prepare Surface for Repair

      1. CAUTION

        DO NOT TOUCH AREAS TO BE REPAIRED AFTER THEY ARE CLEANED.
        TOO MUCH ABRASIVE BLAST CAN CAUSE DETERIORATION OF THE REPAIRED SURFACE CONDITION AND MUST BE PREVENTED.

        Lightly dry blast to prepare the surface for the sprayed coating.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-12-02-120-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-340-054 Metal Spray the Surface for Repair

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Apply the metal spray.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-34-01-340-501, SUBTASK 70-34-01-340-010.

      3. Use CoMat 03-036 METAL SPRAYING WIRE, Ni,Al with metal spray equipment.

      4. Use a locally made metal spray fixture.

      5. Apply sufficient metal spray to get the correct dimensions after grinding.

    3. Remove the masking tape.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-220-150 Examine

      1. Visually examine the sprayed coating.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-34-01-340-501, SUBTASK 70-34-01-340-002.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-324-052 Grind the HP Compressor Heatshield Assembly

    2. CAUTION

      THE LOCALLY MADE GRINDING FIXTURE MUST HOLD THE HEATSHIELD ASSEMBLY RIGID AT BOTH ENDS DURING THE GRINDING OPERATION.

    3. NOTE

      Do not remove the HP Compressor Heatshield Assembly from the grinding fixture until the machined diameter has been examined, refer to Step

      Grind the HP Compressor Heatshield Assembly.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-13-220-151 Examine the Repaired Surface

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Visually examine and measure the dimensions of the repaired surface.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-34-01-340-501, SUBTASK 70-34-01-340-003.

      3. Use workshop inspection equipment with X10 magnification.

      1. Remove the assembly from the grinding fixture.

      2. Use standard workshop equipment.
