General

This repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in 72-41-22 inspection/check.

This repair gives the procedure to vibro polish the HP compressor stage 8 stator vanes.

The stage 8 stator vane must have been repaired, where necessary, and inspected before vibro polishing.

The stage 8 stator vane can only have this repair, completed on it three times.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK numbers are in the SPM.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-22-220-121 Make sure that the Stage 8 Stator Vane can be Vibro Polished

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Examine the vane platform to find if VRS6081 has been completed before (Look for the repair identification symbol).

      2. If the repair identification symbol and /2 is engraved adjacent to the part number, the vane cannot be vibro-polished.

    3. Examine the vane to make sure that all the repairs have been completed.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-22-110-055 Clean the Stage 8 Stator Vane

      1. Chemically clean the vane.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-22-350-058 Apply the Mask to the Vane

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Apply the mask to the vane tip and platform.

    3. NOTE

      Apply the mask to the minimum area of the vane air washed surface.
    1. SUBTASK 72-41-22-380-052-A00 Vibro-Polish the Stage 8 Stator Vane Airfoil, Assembly A

      CAUTION

      DO NOT ABRASIVE BLAST THE VANE AS IT IS A GLASS BEAD PEENED COMPONENT.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Vibro-polish the airfoil and adjacent surfaces. Prepare the component for inspection.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-25-380-501.

      3. Polish the surfaces in the area specified AB as given in the procedure.

      4. The surface finish is to be 20 microinches (0.50 micrometers) maximum on a minimum of 70 percent of the surface area.

      5. On the remainder of the surfaces the surface finish is to be 20 microinches (0.50 micrometers) average and 32 microinches (0.80 micrometers) maximum.

      6. Do not have more than 40 vanes for one cubic foot of the superfinishing media.

      7. Use vibro-polishing equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-22-380-052-B00 Vibro-Polish the Stage 8 Stator Vane Airfoil, Assembly B

      CAUTION

      DO NOT ABRASIVE BLAST THE VANE AS IT IS A GLASS BEAD PEENED COMPONENT.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Vibro-polish the airfoil and adjacent annulus surfaces. Prepare the component for inspection.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-25-380-501.

        Polish the surfaces in the area specified AB as given in the procedure.

        The vane airfoil surface is to have a surface finish of 10 microinches (0.25 micrometers).

        On the remainder of the vane the surface finish is to be 16 microinches (0.40 micrometers) maximum.

        Do not have more than 40 vanes for one cubic foot of the superfinishing media.

        Use vibro-polishing equipment.

        Use one of the superfinishing media and one of the liquid compounds or the Keramo polishing media given below:

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the surface finish of the vanes.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-25-380-501.

      3. Use surface measuring equipment.

        NOTE

        Examine the surface finish on the two sides of the airfoil and the adjacent surfaces in the area specified AB. The surface finish is to be 20 microinches (0.50 micrometers) maximum on a minimum of 70 percent of the surface area. On the remainder of the surfaces the surface finish is to be 20 microinches (0.50 micrometers) average and 32 microinches (0.80 micrometers) maximum.
    1. SUBTASK 72-41-22-220-122-B00 Examine the Stage 8 Stator Vane Surface Finish, Assembly B

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the surface finish of the vanes.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-25-380-501.

        Use surface measuring equipment.

    3. NOTE

      Examine the surface finish on the two sides of the airfoil and the adjacent surfaces in the area specified AB. The vane airfoil surface is to have a surface finish of 10 microinches (0.25 micrometers). On the remainder of the vane the surface finish is to have a surface finish of 16 microinches (0.40 micrometers) maximum.
    1. SUBTASK 72-41-22-350-059 Identify the Repair

      CAUTION

      DO NOT VIBRO-ENGRAVE ON THE VANE AIRFOIL OR LOCATION FACES.
    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Identify the repair.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501, SUBTASK 70-09-00-400-501.

        If this is the first time this repair has been completed on the vane vibro engrave a 1 in a triangle adjacent to the part number.

        If this is the second time the repair has been completed on the vane vibro engrave /1 adjacent to the triangle.

        If this is the third time the repair has been completed on the vane vibro-engrave /2 adjacent to the triangle.

        Use vibro engraving equipment.
