General

Refer to TASK 72-41-00-040-001-A00 to disassemble the HP compressor assembly.

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

Apply the approved penetrating oil before the removal of threaded parts and parts with an interference fit. Let the parts soak before removal. For the approved oils and procedures, Refer to the SPM TASK 70-64-00-640-501.

Discard all rubber seal rings and cotter pins removed in this procedure.

Remove and discard the lockwire before the part is disconnected.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-040-051 Remove the Stage 6 Actuating Ring and the Stage 6 Stator Vanes (Pre SBE 70-0165 and SBE 70-0165)

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. SBE 70-0165: Engine - Additional source for stage 6 variable stator vane spindle bushings

      1. Remove the stage 6 upper actuating ring from the upper half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 34 nuts which attach the stage 6 actuating levers to the stage 6 stator vanes at the positions 5 to 38.

      3. Remove the stage 6 upper actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      4. Remove the 34 stage 6 actuating levers from the stage 6 upper actuating ring.

      5. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the stage 6 stator vanes at the positions 5 to 38.

      6. Remove the eight nuts, the levers and the 16 spacers from the stage 6 stator vanes at the positions 1 to 4 and 39 to 42.

      1. Remove the stage 6 lower actuating ring from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 34 nuts which attach the stage 6 actuating levers to the stage 6 stator vanes at the positions 47 to 80.

      3. Remove the stage 6 lower actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      4. Remove the 34 stage 6 actuating levers from the stage 6 lower actuating ring.

      5. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the stage 6 stator vanes at the positions 47 to 80.

      6. Remove the eight nuts, the levers and the 16 spacers from the stage 6 stator vanes at the positions 43 to 46 and 81 to 84.

      1. Remove the stage 6 stator vanes.

      2. Remove the 42 stage 6 stator vanes from the upper half HP compressor front case.

      3. Remove the 84 spindle split bushes from the spindles of the stage 6 stator vanes.

      4. Remove the 42 stage 6 stator vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case as given in steps C.(1) and (2).

      1. Remove the stage 6 centralizing pads.

      2. Remove the eight bolts which attach the four stage 6 centralizing pads to the stage 6 upper and lower actuating rings.

      3. Remove the four stage 6 centralizing pads and the adjusting washers.

      1. Remove the stage 6 control rod connector bracket from the stage 6 lower actuating ring, Figure.

      2. Remove the two bolts which attach the control rod connector bracket to the stage 6 lower actuating ring.

      3. Remove the control rod connector bracket with the two sleeve dowels.

      4. Remove the two sleeve dowels from the control rod connector bracket.

    4. Remove the six bolts and dowels that attach the three rigging pin brackets to the upper and lower stage 6 actuating rings. There are two rigging pin brackets on the upper actuating ring. Remove the three rigging pin brackets.

      1. Remove the 84 stage 6 stator vane outer bushes from the HP compressor front case. Use IAE 1R18268 Removal adapter 1 off. Refer to detail A on Figure.

      2. Install the pin into one of the bushes to be removed.

      3. Install the two split bushes on the bush to be removed.

      4. Install the nut X on the pin. Tighten the nut X to hold the extractor in the correct position.

      5. Install the nut W on the pin.

      6. Install IAE 1R18266 Impact extractor 1 off on the pin.

      7. Tighten the nut W, installed in step G.(4) to attach the removal adapter to the impact extractor.

      8. Use the impact extractor to remove the bush.

      9. Remove the bush from the removal adapter.

      10. Remove the remaining 83 stage 6 stator vane outer bushes as given in steps G.(1) to (8).

      5. Remove the 26 stage 5 actuating levers from the stage 5 upper actuating ring.

      6. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 4 to 29.

      7. Remove the six nuts, the levers and the 12 spacers from the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 1 to 3 and 30 to 32.

      1. Remove the stage 5 lower actuating ring from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 26 nuts which attach the stage 5 actuating levers to the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 36 to 61.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the stage 5 lower actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      4. SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the stage 5 lower actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      5. Remove the 26 stage 5 actuating levers from the stage 5 lower actuating ring.

      6. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 36 to 61.

      7. Remove the six nuts, the levers and 12 spacers from the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 33 to 35 and 62 to 64.

      1. Remove the stage 5 stator vanes from the upper half HP compressor front case.

      2. CAUTION

        YOU MUST NOT LET THE BOLTS TURN WHEN YOU REMOVE THEM. THE BOLTS ARE A CLOSE TOLERANCE FIT.

        Remove the 16 nuts and bolts which attach the front and rear half shrouds to the stage 5 stator vanes inner pivot point.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0422: Remove the front and rear half shroud with the half bushes.

      4. SBE 72-0422: Remove the front and rear half shroud with the one piece bushes.

      5. Remove the 32 stage 5 stator vanes.

      6. Remove and discard the 32 0-ring seals from the spindles of the stage 5 stator vanes.

      1. Remove the stage 5 stator vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 32 stage 5 stator vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case as given in Step to Step.

      1. Remove the stage 5 centralizing pads.

      2. Remove the eight bolts which attach the four stage 5 centralizing pads to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating rings.

      3. Remove the four stage 5 centralizing pads and the adjusting washers.

      1. Remove the stage 5 control rod connector bracket from the stage 5 lower actuating ring. Refer to Figure.

      2. Remove the two bolts which attach the control rod connector bracket to the lower actuating ring.

      3. Remove the control rod connector bracket with the two sleeve dowels.

      4. Remove the two sleeve dowels from the control rod connector bracket.

    4. Pre SBE 72-0084: Remove the six bolts and dowels which attach the three rigging pin brackets to the upper and lower stage 5 actuating rings. There are two rigging pin brackets on the upper actuating ring. Remove the three rigging pin brackets.

    5. SBE 72-0084: Remove the two bolts and dowels which attach the rigging pin bracket to the lower stage 5 actuating ring. Remove the rigging pin bracket.

      1. Remove the stage 5 stator vane outer bushes. Use IAE 1R18267 Removal adapter 1 off. Refer to detail B on Figure.

      2. Install the screw into one of the stage 5 stator vane outer bushes to be removed.

      3. Install the two halves of the body on the screw and over the outer bush.

      4. Install the nut Z on the screw. Lightly tighten the nut Z to hold the body in position.

      5. Install the hose clip on the body. Tighten the hose clip on the body.

      6. Tighten the nut Z.

      7. Install the nut Y.

      8. Install IAE 1R18266 Impact extractor 1 off on the screw.

      9. Tighten the nut Y on the impact extractor to attach the impact extractor to the screw.

      10. Use the impact extractor to remove the bush.

      11. Remove the bush from the removal adapter.

      12. Remove the remaining 63 stage 5 stator vane outer bushes as given in steps I.(1) to (10).

      1. Remove the 64 stage 5 stator vane inner bushes, Figure.

      2. Install IAE 1R18290 Removal extractor 1 off in to one of the inner bushes to be removed.

      3. Apply a load on the removal extractor to remove the inner bush.

      4. Remove the remaining 63 inner bushes as given in steps J.(1) and (2).

      3. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the stage 4 upper actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      4. SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the stage 4 upper actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      5. Remove the 21 stage 4 actuating levers from the stage 4 upper actuating ring.

      6. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the stage 4 stator vanes at the positions 3 to 23.

      7. Remove the four nuts, the levers and the eight spacers from the spindles of the stage 4 VSV at the positions 1, 2, 24 and 25.

      1. Remove the stage 4 lower actuating ring from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 21 nuts which attach the stage 4 actuating levers to the stage 4 stator vanes at the positions 28 to 48.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the stage 4 lower actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      4. SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the stage 4 lower actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      5. Remove the 21 stage 4 actuating levers from the stage 4 lower actuating ring.

      6. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the stage 4 stator vanes at the positions 28 to 48.

      7. Remove the four nuts, the levers and the eight spacers from the spindles of the stage 4 stator vanes at the positions 26, 27, 49 and 50.

      1. Remove the stage 4 stator vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Pre SBE 72-0422: Remove the 12 bolts, 24 washers and the 12 nuts which attach the stage 4 half shroud, the half bushes and the stage 4 half seal ring to the stage 4 stator vanes at the inner pivot point.

      3. Remove the stage 4 half seal ring, the stage 4 half shroud and the half bushes.

      4. SBE 72-0422: Remove the front half shroud with the integral seal and rear half shroud and the one piece bushes.

      5. Remove the 25 stage 4 stator vanes.

      6. Remove and discard the 25 0-ring seals from the spindles of the stage 4 stator vanes removed in step C.(3). Remove the sealing washers from the stage 4 inner bush.

      1. Remove the stage 4 stator vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 25 stage 4 stator vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case as given in Step to Step.

      1. Remove the stage 4 centralizing pads.

      2. Remove the eight bolts which attach the four stage 4 centralizing pads to the stage 4 upper and lower actuating rings.

      3. Remove the four stage 5 centralizing pads and adjusting washers.

      1. Remove the stage 4 control rod connector bracket from the stage 4 lower actuating ring. Refer to Figure.

      2. Remove the two bolts which attach the control rod connector bracket to the lower actuating ring.

      3. Remove the control rod connector bracket with the two sleeve dowels.

      4. Remove the two sleeve dowels from the control rod connector bracket.

    4. Pre SBE 72-0084: Remove the six bolts and dowels which attach the three rigging pin brackets to the upper and lower stage 4 actuating rings. There are two rigging pin brackets on the upper actuating ring. Remove the three rigging pin brackets.

    5. SBE 72-0084: Remove the two bolts and dowels which attach the rigging pin bracket to the lower stage 4 actuating ring. Remove the rigging pin bracket.

      1. Remove the 50 stage 4 stator vane outer bushes. Use IAE 1R18269 Removal adapter 1 off. Refer to detail A on Figure.

      2. Install the pin into one of the bushes to be removed.

      3. Install the two split bushes on the bush to be removed.

      4. Install the nut X on the pin. Tighten the nut X to hold the extractor in the correct position.

      5. Install the nut W on the pin.

      6. Install IAE 1R18266 Impact extractor 1 off on the pin.

      7. Tighten the nut W, installed in step I.(4) to attach the extractor to the impact extractor.

      8. Use the impact extractor to remove the bush.

      9. Remove the bush from the bush extractor.

      10. Remove the remaining 49 stage 4 stator vane outer bushes as given in steps I.(1) to (8).

      1. Remove the 50 stage 4 stator vane inner bushes. Refer to Figure.

      2. Install IAE 1R18290 Removal extractor 1 off in to one of the inner bushes to be removed.

      3. Apply a load on the removal extractor to remove the inner bush.

      4. Remove the remaining 49 inner bushes as given in steps J.(1) and (2).

      4. SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the stage 3 upper actuating ring and actuating levers.

      5. Remove the 12 stage 3 actuating levers from the stage 3 upper actuating ring.

      6. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the stage 3 stator vanes at the positions 3 to 14.

      7. Remove the four nuts, the levers and the eight spacers from the spindles of the stage 3 stator vanes at the positions 1, 2, 15 and 16.

      1. Remove the stage 3 lower actuating ring from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 12 nuts which attach the stage 3 actuating levers to the stage 3 stator vanes at the positions 19 to 30.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the stage 3 lower actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      4. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the stage 3 lower actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      5. Remove the 12 stage 3 actuating levers from the stage 3 lower actuating ring.

      6. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the stage 3 stator vanes at the positions 19 to 30.

      7. Remove the four nuts, the four levers and the eight spacers from the spindles of the stage 3 stator vanes at the positions 17, 18, 31 and 32.

      1. Remove the stage 3 stator vanes from the upper half HP compressor front case.

      2. Pre SBE 72-0422:Remove the eight bolts, the 16 washers and the eight nuts which attach the stage 3 front and rear half shroud, the half bushes and the stage 3 front half seal ring to the stage 3 stator vanes at the inner pivot points.

      3. Remove the stage 3 front half seal ring, the stage 3 front and rear half shroud and the half bushes.

      4. SBE 72-0422: Remove the front half shroud with the integral seal and rear half shroud and the one piece bushes.

      5. Remove the 16 stage 3 stator vanes.

      6. Remove and discard the 0-ring seals from the spindles of the stage 3 stator vanes. Remove the sealing washers from the stage 3 inner bushes.

      1. Remove the stage 3 stator vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 16 stage 3 stator vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case as given in Step to Step.

      1. Remove the stage 3 centralizing pads.

      2. Remove the eight bolts which attach the four stage 3 centralizing pads to the stage 3 upper and lower actuating rings.

      3. Remove the four stage 3 centralizing pads and the adjusting washers.

    4. Pre SBE 72-0084: Remove the six bolts and dowels which attach the three rigging pin brackets to the upper and lower stage 3 actuating rings. There are two rigging pin brackets on the upper stage 3 actuating ring. Remove the three rigging pin brackets.

    5. SBE 72-0084: Remove the two bolts and dowels which attach the rigging pin bracket to the upper stage 3 actuating ring. Remove the rigging pin bracket.

      1. Remove the stage 3 stator vane outer bushes.

        1. Use IAE 1R18270 Removal adapter 1 off to remove the two outer bushes at the two short bosses. Refer to detail B on Figure.

        2. Install the screw in to one of the stage 3 stator vane outer bushes (short bosses) to be removed.

        3. Install the two halves of the body on the screw and over the outer bush.

        4. Install the nut Z on the screw. Lightly tighten the nut Z to hold the body in position.

        5. Install the hose clip on the body. Tighten the hose clip on the body.

        6. Tighten the nut Z.

        7. Install the nut Y.

        8. Install IAE 1R18266 Impact extractor 1 off on the screw.

        9. Tighten the nut Y on the impact extractor to attach the impact extractor to the screw.

        10. Use the impact extractor to remove the bush.

        11. Remove the bush from the removal adapter.

        12. Remove the remaining stage 3 stator vane outer bush (short boss) as given in steps (a) to (j).

        1. Use IAE 1R18285 Removal extractor 1 off to remove the remaining 30 outer bushes. Refer to detail A on Figure.

        2. Install the pin into one of the bushes to be removed.

        3. Install the two split bushes on the bush to be removed.

        4. Install the nut X on the pin. Tighten the nut X to hold the extractor in the correct position.

        5. Install the nut W on the pin.

        6. Install IAE 1R18266 Impact extractor 1 off on the pin.

        7. Tighten the nut W, installed in step (d) to attach the extractor to the impact extractor.

        8. Use the impact extractor to remove the bush.

        9. Remove the bush from the removal extractor.

        10. Remove the remaining 29 stage 3 stator vane outer bushes as given in steps (a) to (h).

      1. Remove the 32 stage 3 stator vane inner bushes. Refer to Figure.

      2. Install IAE 1R18265 Removal punch 1 off in to one of the inner bushes to be removed.

      3. Apply a load on the removal punch to remove the inner bush.

      4. Remove the remaining 31 inner bushes as given in step I.(1) and (2).

      6. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the inlet guide vanes at the positions 3 to 18.

      7. Remove the four nuts, the actuating levers and the eight spacers from the spindles of the inlet guide vanes at the positions 1, 2, 19 and 20.

      1. Remove the inlet guide vane actuating ring from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 16 nuts which attach the inlet guide vane actuating levers to the inlet guide vanes at the positions 23 to 38.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the inlet guide vane actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      4. SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Remove the inlet guide vane actuating ring and the actuating levers.

      5. Remove the 16 inlet guide vane actuating levers from the inlet guide vane actuating ring.

      6. Remove the two spacers from the spindles of the inlet guide vanes at the positions 23 to 38.

      7. Remove the four nuts, the actuating levers and the eight spacers from the spindles of the inlet guide vanes at the positions 21, 22, 39 and 40.

      1. Remove the inlet guide vanes from the upper half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the 3 nuts and the 3 bolts which attach the inlet guide vane half shroud to the split ring assembly.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0422: Remove the inlet guide vane half shroud with the 20 half bushes and the split ring assembly.

      4. SBE 72-0422: Remove the inlet guide vane half shroud with the one piece bushes and the split ring assembly.

      5. Remove the 20 inlet guide vanes. Remove the sealing washers from the VIGV inner bushes.

      1. Remove the inlet guide vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the inlet guide vanes from the lower half HP compressor front case as given in steps C.(1) to (3).

      1. Remove the centralizing pads from the actuating ring.

      2. Remove the eight bolts and washers which attach the four centralizing pads to the actuating ring.

      3. Remove the four centralizing pads and the adjusting washers.

    4. Pre SBE 72-0084: Remove the 6 bolts, nuts and spacers which attach the VIGV rigging pin brackets to the upper and lower VIGV actuating rings. There are two rigging pin brackets on the upper VIGV actuating ring. Remove the three rigging pin brackets.

    5. SBE 72-0084: Remove the two bolts, nuts and spacers which attach the VIGV rigging pin bracket to the lower VIGV actuating ring. Remove the rigging pin bracket.

      1. Remove the inlet guide vane spindle outer bushes.

        1. Use IAE 1R18291 Adapter extractor 1 off to remove the two short spindle bushes. These are at the positions 10 and 11 on the upper half HP compressor front case. Refer to detail B on Figure.

        2. Install the screw in to one of the variable inlet guide vane outer bushes (short spindle) to be removed.

        3. Install the two halves of the body on the screw and over the outer bush.

        4. Install the nut Z on the screw. Lightly tighten the nut Z to hold the body in position.

        5. Install the hose clip on the body. Tighten the hose clip on the body.

        6. Tighten the nut Z.

        7. Install the nut Y.

        8. Install IAE 1R18266 Impact extractor 1 off on the screw.

        9. Tighten the nut Y on the impact extractor to attach the impact extractor to the screw.

        10. Use the impact extractor to remove the bush.

        11. Remove the bush from the extractor adapter.

        12. Remove the remaining variable inlet guide vane outer bush (short spindle) as given in steps (a) to (j).

        1. Use IAE 1R18289 Bushing extractor 1 off to remove the remaining 38 spindle bushes. Refer to detail A on Figure.

        2. Install the pin into one of the bushes to be removed.

        3. Install the two split bushes on the bush to be removed.

        4. Install the nut X on the pin. Tighten the nut X to hold the extractor in the correct position.

        5. Install the nut W on the pin.

        6. Install IAE 1R18266 Impact extractor 1 off on the pin.

        7. Tighten the nut W, installed in step (d) to attach the extractor to the impact extractor.

        8. Use the impact extractor to remove the bush.

        9. Remove the bush from the bush extractor.

        10. Remove the remaining 37 variable inlet guide vane outer bushes as given in steps (a) to (h).

      1. Remove the 40 inlet guide vane spindle inner bushes. Refer to Figure.

      2. Install IAE 1R18264 Removal punch 1 off in to one of the spindle bushes to be removed.

      3. Apply a load on the removal punch to remove the spindle bush.

      4. Remove the remaining 39 spindle bushes as given in steps I. (1) and (2).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-040-056-A00 Remove the Stages 3 to 6 Rotor Path Rings (Pre SBE 72-0027)

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Remove the stage 6 rotor path ring from the upper half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the segment of the stage 6 rotor path ring at the opposite flange to the anti-rotation pin.

      3. Remove the sealing strip from between the segments of the stage 6 rotor path rings.

      4. Remove the remaining segment of the stage 6 rotor path ring.

    3. Remove the stage 6 rotor path ring from the lower half HP compressor front case as given in steps A.(1) to (3).

      1. Remove the stage 5 rotor path ring from the upper half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the segment of the stage 5 rotor path ring at the opposite flange to the anti-rotation pin.

      3. Remove the sealing strip from between the segments of the stage 6 rotor path ring.

      4. Remove the remaining segment of the stage 5 rotor path ring.

    4. Remove the stage 5 rotor path ring from the lower half HP compressor front case as given in steps C.(1) to (3).

      1. Remove the stage 4 rotor path ring from the upper half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the segment of the stage 4 rotor path ring at the opposite flange to the anti-rotation pin.

      3. Remove the sealing strip from between the segments of the stage 4 rotor path ring.

      4. Remove the remaining segments of the stage 4 rotor path ring.

    5. Remove the stage 4 rotor path ring from the lower half HP compressor front case as given in steps E.(1) to (3).

      1. Remove the stage 3 rotor path ring from the upper half HP compressor front case.

      2. Remove the segment of the stage 3 rotor path ring at the opposite flange to the anti-rotation pin.

      3. Remove the sealing strip from between the segments of the stage 3 rotor path.

      4. Remove the remaining segment of the stage 3 rotor path ring.

    6. Remove the stage 3 rotor path ring from the lower half HP compressor front case as given in steps G.(1) to (3).
