This Repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in 72-41-32 Inspection/Check

This TASK gives the procedure to vibro polish the HP compressor variable inlet guide vanes (VIGV).

The VIGV must have been repaired, where necessary, and inspected before vibro polishing.

The VIGV can only have this repair, completed on it three times.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK numbers are in the SPM.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-32-220-102 Make sure that the VIGV can be Vibro Polished

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Examine the VIGV to find if VRS6075 has been completed before (Look for the repair identification symbol).

      2. If the repair identification symbol and /2 is engraved adjacent to the part number, the VIGV cannot be vibro-polished.

    3. Examine the VIGV to make sure that any necessary repairs have been completed.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-32-110-057 Clean the VIGV

      1. Remove the grease.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

        Use degreasing equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-32-350-056-A00 Apply the Mask to the VIGV, Assembly A, Assembly C and Assembly F

      1. Apply mask to the VIGV spindles.

      2. Apply the mask to the minimum area of the VIGV air washed surface.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-32-350-056-B00 Apply the Mask to the VIGV, Assembly B, Assembly D and Assembly E

      1. Apply mask to the VIGV spindles.

      2. Apply the mask to the minimum area of the VIGV air washed surface.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-32-380-051-A00 Vibro-Polish the VIGV Airfoil, Assembly A and Assembly B

      CAUTION

      DO NOT ABRASIVE BLAST THE VIGV.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Vibro-polish the VIGV airfoil and the adjacent annulus surfaces. Prepare the component for inspection.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-25-380-501.

        Polish the surfaces in the area specified AB as given in the procedure.

        The surface finish is to be 32 microinches (0.80 micrometers).

        Do not have more than 3 VIGV for one cubic foot of the superpolishing media.

        Use one of the superpolishing media and one of the liquid compounds or the Keramo polishing media given below.

        Use vibro-polish facility.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-32-380-051-B00 Vibro-Polish the VIGV Airfoil, Assembly C and Assembly D

      CAUTION

      DO NOT ABRASIVE BLAST THE VIGV.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Vibro-polish the VIGV airfoil and the adjacent annulus surfaces. Prepare the component for inspection.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-25-380-501.

        Polish the surfaces in the area specified AB as given in the procedure.

        The VIGV airfoil is to have a surface finish of 20 microinches (0.50 micrometers) over a minimum of 70 percent of the surface area.

        On the remainder of the VIGV the surface finish is to be between 20 microinches (0.50 micrometers) and 32 microinches (0.80 micrometers).

        Do not have more than 3 VIGV for one cubic foot of the superpolishing media.

        Use one of the superpolishing media and one of the liquid compounds or the Keramo polishing media given below.

        Use vibro-polish facility.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-32-380-051-C00 Vibro-Polish the VIGV Airfoil, Assembly E and Assembly F

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Vibro-polish the VIGV airfoil and the adjacent annulus surfaces. Prepare the component for inspection.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-25-380-501.

        Polish the surfaces in the area specified AB as given in the procedure.

        The VIGV airfoil and fillet surfaces are to have a surface finish of 10 microinches (0.25 micrometers).

        On the remainder of the VIGV the surface finish is to be 16 microinches (0.40 micrometers).

        Do not have more than 3 VIGV for one cubic foot of the superpolishing media.

        Use one of the superpolishing media and one of the liquid compounds or the Keramo polishing media given below.

        Use vibro-polish facility.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-32-220-103-A00 Examine the VIGV Surface Finish, Assembly A and Assembly B

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the surface finish of the VIGV.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-25-380-501.

        Use surface finish measuring equipment.

    3. NOTE

      Check the surface finish on the two sides of the airfoil and the adjacent surfaces in the area specified AB. The surface finish is to be 32 microinches (0.80 micrometers) on the surface area specified AB.

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the surface finish of the VIGV.

      2. NOTE

        Check the surface finish on the two sides of the airfoil and the adjacent surfaces in the area specified AB.
        The VIGV airfoil surface is to have a surface finish of 20 microinches (0.50 micrometers) over a minimum of 70 percent of the surface area.

On the remainder of the VIGV the surface finish is to be 16 microinches (0.40 micrometers).
    1. SUBTASK 72-41-32-350-057 Identify the Repair

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Identify the repair.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501 SUBTASK 70-09-00-400-501.

        If this is the first time this repair has been completed on the VIGV, vibro engrave a 1 in a triangle adjacent to the part number.

        If this is the second time this repair has been completed on the VIGV, vibro engrave /1 adjacent to the triangle.

        If this is the third time this repair has been completed on the VIGV, vibro engrave /2 adjacent to the triangle.

        Use vibro-engraving equipment.
