Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-320-154 Stop Drill the Damage Surfaces

      1. Drill holes at the ends of the cracks.

      2. Use a drill with a diameter of 0.059 in. (1.50 mm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-310-058 Weld Patches on the Damaged Surfaces (Dents and Cracks)

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    3. Machine to remove rough edges or distortion around damage.

      1. Mechanically remove oxides that are in 0.250 in. (6.35 mm) of a machined hole.

      2. Use a silicone carbide abrasive wheel or equivalent.

      1. Make a patch that is 0.125 in. (3.18 mm) larger than the area to be patched.

      2. You can make the patch from parts of the same part number that were discarded. You can also make patches from AMS 5510 sheet stock of the same thickness as the part.

      1. Examine the patch for cracks under a white light at 3X magnification.

      2. Reject the patch if there are cracks.

      1. Tack weld fully around the patch, approximately 0.031 in. (0.79 mm) from the edge, with a space of 0.031 in. (0.079 mm) between tacks.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-31-13-310-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-220-172 Examine the No. 5 Bearing Scavenge Tube Heat Shield after Weld Repair

      1. Inspect the heat shield after weld repair.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-50-53-200-000 (INSPECTION-000).
