    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Machine the rear bearing journal.

      2. Remove all damage and wear.

      3. Keep the removal of material to the minimum necessary to remove the damage.

      4. The journal diameter must be between 1.7320 to 1.7226 in. (43.993 to 43.754 mm).

      5. Surface rough must be 32 microinches (0.8 micron) before plating.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-240-057 Examine the Starter Drive Gear

      1. Do the magnetic particle inspection for cracks.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-24-01-240-501.

      3. No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-210-054 Nital Etch the Bearing Journal

      1. Do the nital etch on the bearing journal to find sign of burned metal.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-21-02-210-501.

      3. Machine the bearing journal if there is sign of burned metal.

      4. Keep the removal of material to the minimum necessary to remove the damage.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-370-062 Do the De-embrittle Treatment

      1. Put the starter drive gear into oil at 284 deg F (140 deg C) for 2 hours.

      2. Use a hot oil tank.

      3. Do this process as soon as possible in 2 hours after the etch.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-380-054 Shot-peen the Bearing Journal

      1. Shot-peen the bearing journal surface to an intensity of 6 to 8A.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-04-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-110-059 Clean the Starter Drive Gear

WHEN YOU USE COMAT 01-001 INHIBITED AND STABILIZED TRICHLOROETHANE YOU MUST USE THE NECESSARY PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. DO NOT GET THE SOLVENT ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. YOU MUST NOT SMOKE WHEN YOU USE THE SOLVENT AS THE VAPOR CHANGES AND BECOMES TOXIC.

        Do the vapor degreasing.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-330-059 Chromium Plate the Rear Bearing Journal

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Mask the areas of the gear not to be plated.

      1. Chromium plate the rear bearing journal.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-02-330-501.

      3. Plate to a sufficient thickness to permit the machining to the last dimensions.

      4. The plating out of the rear bearing journal area is permitted but must be removed.

    3. Remove the mask.

      1. Clean and dry the starter drive gear.

      2. Flush with cold water.

      3. Flush with hot water.

      4. Dry with air blast.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-370-063 De-embrittle the Starter Drive Gear

      1. Put the drive gear into a furnace at 284 to 320 deg F (140 to 160 deg C) for 5 hours.

      2. Do this procedure as soon as possible in 4 hours after the plating.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-220-086 Examine the Starter Drive Gear

      1. Do the visual inspection of the plating for finish, cracks and adhesion.

      2. Plating must have a constant color.

      3. No bubbles or sign of burned metal are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-320-068 Machine the Rear Bearing Journal of the Starter Drive Gear

      1. Machine the rear bearing journal.

      2. The journal diameter must be between 1.7340 to 1.7344 in. (44.043 to 44.054 mm).

      3. Clean up the edges of groove and chamfers, where necessary.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-22-220-087 Examine the Chromium Plated Areas

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Do the visual inspection of chromium plated areas for cracks and adhesion.
