      1. Measure dimension D.

      2. Measure dimension D and record it.

      1. Machine the roller bearing shoulder.

      2. Remove all of the damage and wear.

      3. Keep the removal of material to the minimum necessary to remove the damage.

      4. Do not remove more than 0.0053 in. (0.135 mm).

      5. Surface rough must be 32 microinch (0.8 micron) before plating.

      1. Measure dimension D.

      2. The value must be 1.2860 in. (32.665 mm) minimum.

      3. Reject the gearshaft if the dimension D is less than the minimum value.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-43-240-056 Examine the Bevel Gearshaft

      1. Do the magnetic particle inspection for cracks.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-24-01-240-501.

      3. No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-43-210-053 Nital Etch the Roller Bearing Shoulder

      1. Do the nital etch on the roller bearing shoulder to find sign of burning.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-21-02-210-501.

      3. Machine the roller bearing journal if there are signs of burnt metal.

      4. Keep the removal of material to the minimum necessary to remove the damage.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-43-370-056 De-embrittle the Bevel Gearshaft

      1. Put the bevel gearshaft onto oil at 284 deg F (140 deg C) for 2 hours.

      2. Use a hot oil tank.

      3. Do this procedure as soon as possible in less than 2 hours after the etch.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-43-380-053 Shot-peen the Roller Bearing Shoulder

      1. Shot-peen the roller bearing shoulder to an intensity of 0.006A to 0.008A in.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-04-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-43-110-055 Clean the Bevel Gearshaft

      1. WARNING

WHEN YOU USE COMAT 01-001 INHIBITED AND STABILIZED TRICHLOROETHANE YOU MUST USE THE NECESSARY PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. DO NOT GET THE SOLVENT ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. YOU MUST NOT SMOKE WHEN YOU USE THE SOLVENT AS THE VAPOR CHANGES AND BECOMES TOXIC.

        Do the vapor degreasing.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-43-330-054 Chromium Plate the Roller Bearing Shoulder

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Mask the areas not to be plated.

      1. Do the chromium plate.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-02-330-501.

      3. Plate to a sufficient thickness to permit the machining to the last dimension.

      4. The plating out of the roller bearing shoulder is permitted but must be removed.

    3. Remove the mask.

      1. Clean and dry the bevel gearshaft.

      2. Flush with cold water.

      3. Flush with hot water.

      4. Dry with air blast.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-43-370-057 De-embrittle the Bevel Gearshaft

      1. Put the bevel gearshaft into an oven at 284 to 320 deg F (140 to 160 deg C) for 5 hours.

      2. Do this procedure as soon as possible in less than 4 hours after the plating.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-43-220-067 Examine the Plating

      1. Do the visual inspection of the plating for finish, cracks and adhesion.

      2. Use process plating tanks.

      3. Plating must have constant color.

      4. No bubbles or sign of burnt metal are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-60-43-420-058 Machine the Roller Bearing Shoulder

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Machine the roller bearing shoulder.

      2. The new value must be within plus or minus 0.0006 in. (0.015 mm) in relation to dimension D measured in Step.

      3. The new value must be more than 1.2913 in. (32.800 mm).

      4. Clean up the edges of the groove and chamfer where necessary.
