General

This TASK gives the procedure to remove the center bearing housing, the PTO sealing plate, the oil feed adapter, the main oil distributor and the oil feed tube, the rear seal drain tube, the bush and the dowel pins.

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

Apply the approved penetrating oil before the removal of threaded parts. Let the parts soak before removal. For the approved oils and procedures, refer to the SPM TASK 70-64-00-640-501.

Discard all rubber seal rings removed in this procedure.

The number for each radial location must be identified in a clockwise direction. These start at the engine top position when you look from the rear of the engine, unless stated differently in the procedure.

The No. 1 strut, which is the top position strut of the fan frame assembly, is identified by the five pressure tubes on the No. 1 strut leading edge.

NOTE

Special tools are identified in the procedure by the tool primary number.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-030-137 Turn the Fan Frame Assembly to the Horizontal Position

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Make sure that the fan frame assembly is installed, vertically with the front end up, on the turnover stand. Refer to TASK 72-32-00-030-013 (DISASSEMBLY-013).

    3. Release the lock pin from the holes in the handle and the support C of the turnover stand.

    4. Turn the handle to set the fan frame assembly horizontal with the No. 6 strut up.

    5. NOTE

      Make sure that the hole in the support C and one of the eight holes in the handle are aligned. If necessary, turn the handle to make the two holes aligned.

      Install the lock pin in to position to lock the handle of the turnover stand.

    2. SUBTASK 72-32-00-030-138 Remove the Oil Feed Tube, the Main Oil Distributor and the Oil Feed Adapter

    1. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    2. Remove the three bolts which attach the oil tube cover to the oil feed adapter, Figure. Remove the oil tube cover.

    3. Remove the oil feed tube from the No. 4 strut, Figure. Remove the three sealing rings and two packings from the oil feed tube and discard them.

      4. Remove the main oil distributor from the No. 4 strut.

      1. Remove the three bolts and washers which attach the main oil distributor to the No. 4 strut. Remove the main oil distributor.

      2. Remove the sealing ring from the main oil distributor and discard it.

    5. Remove the three bolts and washers which attach the oil feed adapter to the fan frame assembly. Remove the oil feed adapter.

    3. SUBTASK 72-32-00-030-139 Remove the Brackets, the PTO Sealing Plate, the Adjusting Washer and the Center Bearing Housing Assembly from the Fan Frame Assembly

    1. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    2. Remove the four bolts which attach the two brackets to the PTO sealing plate. Remove the brackets.

      3. Remove the PTO sealing plate from the fan frame assembly.

      1. Remove the three bolts which attach the center bearing housing assembly to the sealing plate.

      2. Remove the four bolts which attach the PTO sealing plate to the fan frame assembly.

      3. Install the three puller bolts (part of IAE 1J12188 Puller bolt 1 off) in to the three threaded holes in the PTO sealing plate.

      4. Tighten the three puller bolts equally until the PTO sealing plate is released from the fan frame assembly.

      5. Remove the three puller bolts from the threaded holes in the PTO sealing plate.

      6. Remove the sealing ring from the groove in the PTO sealing plate and discard it.

    4. Remove the adjusting washer from the center bearing housing assembly.

      5. Install IAE 1J12327 Handling holder 1 off to the center bearing housing assembly.

      1. Install three screws (part of the handling holder) in to the handling holder. Put the screws to the fully forward positions so that the threads of screws are released from the threads in the handling holder.

      2. Align the three locating holes in the handling holder with the three locating pins in the center bearing housing assembly.

      3. NOTE

        When you turn the screws. Keep the threads of screws released from the threads of handling holder. If the threads of screws are engaged with the threads of housing assembly and handling holder, you can not turn the screws.

        Install the handling holder to the center bearing housing assembly and attach with the three screws. Tighten the screws.

    6. Remove the center bearing housing assembly from the No. 6 strut of the fan frame assembly with the handling holder.

      7. Remove the handling holder from the center bearing assembly.

      1. Remove the three screws from the threaded holes in the center bearing housing assembly.

      2. Remove the handling holder.

    8. Remove the sealing ring from the center bearing housing assembly and discard it.

    4. SUBTASK 72-32-00-030-140 Disassemble the Center Bearing Housing Assembly

    1. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    2. Remove the seal carrier from the center bearing housing, Figure.

    3. Remove the two sealing rings from the grooves in the seal carrier and discard them.

    4. Remove the retaining ring from the center bearing housing.

      5. Install the center bearing housing on to the IAE 1J12432 Base holder 1 off, Figure.

      1. Put the center bearing housing into position on the base holder.

      2. Safety the center bearing housing with the clamp and the wing nut (part of the base holder). Tighten the wing nut.

    6. Put IAE 1J12329 Hooking puller 1 off on to a work bench. Turn the nut (part of the hooking puller) clockwise until the holder (part of the hooking puller) fully moves in the direction of the knob.

    7. Release the knob (part of the hooking puller) from the holder. Pull the knob to retract the two jaws (part of the hooking puller) fully.

    8. Install the hooking puller on to the center bearing housing.

      9. Engage the jaws with the outer roller bearing.

      1. Turn the nut counterclockwise to lower the jaws until they touch the base holder.

      2. Push the knob down to lower the set rod and to extend the jaws. Make sure that the jaws engage with the lower end face of the outer roller bearing.

      3. Install the knob on to the holder and tighten the knob.

    10. Hold the guide (part of the hooking puller) and turn the nut clockwise to lift the outer roller bearing until it is released from the center bearing housing.

    11. Remove the hooking puller from the center bearing housing. Put the hooking puller on to the work bench vertically with the knob up.

      12. Remove the outer roller bearing from the jaws.

      1. Remove the knob from the holder.

      2. Hold the outer roller bearing and the guide and pull up the knob to lift the set rod until the jaws are fully retracted.

      3. CAUTION

        CAREFULLY LIFT THE HOOKING PULLER SO THAT THE JAWS DO NOT TOUCH THE ROLLERS OF THE OUTER ROLLER BEARING TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ROLLERS.

        Hold the outer roller bearing and lift the hooking puller to remove the outer roller bearing from the jaws.

    13. Remove the wing nut and open the clamp. Remove the center bearing housing from the base holder.

    5. SUBTASK 72-32-00-030-187 Remove the Rear Seal Drain Tube from the Fan Frame (SBE 72-0150 and Pre SBE 72-0211)

      SBE 72-0150: Engine - LP Compressor - Provide a New Weight Reduced Fan Frame Assembly and Associated Details

    1. Refer to Figure

    2. Remove the bolt which attaches the drain tube to the fan frame.

    3. Remove the drain tube.

    4. Remove the sealing ring from the drain tube and discard it.

    6. SUBTASK 72-32-00-030-199 Remove the Bush from the Fan Frame

    1. Refer to Figure.

    2. Install the IAE 1J12446 Pusher 1 off to the fan frame.

    3. Engage the pusher (part of the IAE 1J12446 Pusher) with the bush by the pusher nut A (part of the IAE 1J12446 Pusher).

    4. Turn the pusher nut B (part of the IAE 1J12446 Pusher) until the bush is released from the hole on the fan frame.

    5. Remove the pusher.

    7. SUBTASK 72-32-00-030-200 Remove the Dowel Pins from the Fan Frame

    1. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

    2. Remove the four nuts and washers which attach the dowel pins to the rear flange of the fan frame.

    3. Attach IAE 1J12443 Puller 1 off on to the rear flange of the fan frame.

    4. Turn the puller nut to pull out the dowel pin from the rear flange of the fan frame.

    5. Do Step and Step again for the remaining three dowel pins.
