General

This TASK gives the procedure for the inspection of the ball bearing assembly.

All Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC.

The policy that is necessary for inspection is given in the SPM TASK 70-20-01-200-501.

All the parts must be cleaned before any part is examined.

All the parts must be visually examined for damage, corrosion and wear. Any defects that are not identified in the procedure must be referred to IAE.

For data on the inspection and preservation of bearings, refer to the SPM TASK 70-29-01-290-501.

Do not discard any part until you are sure there are no repairs available. Refer to the instructions in Repair before a discarded part is used again or oversize parts are installed.

Parts which must be discarded can be held although no repair is available. The repair of a discarded part could be shown to be necessary at a later date.

All the parts must be examined to make sure that all the repairs have been completed satisfactorily.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK numbers are in the SPM.

Bearings that are rejected must not be repaired if the cause is as follows:

They have become too hot because of a decrease of oil, the inner ring has turned on its hub, a compartment fire, or skidding.

Because of an engine failure.

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Worn at location 1.

        1. Examine the outer diameter at location 1.

          1. If the diameter is between 2.9454 and 2.9456 in. (74.813 and 74.820 mm)

          2. Accept

          1. Less than 2.9454 in. (74.813 mm)

          2. Reject

      1. Worn at location 0505.

        1. Examine the inner diameter at location 0505.

          1. If the diameter is between 1.7715 and 1.7716 in. (44.994 and 45.000 mm)

          2. Accept

          1. More than 1.7716 in. (45.000 mm)

          2. Reject

          3. Write down the dimension of the diameter.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-16-220-102 Examine the Ball Bearing (01-600)

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. NOTE

Examine by two inspections from among the three inspections (Step B., C. and D.) in this subtask.

Examine the contact angle. Use an IAE 2J12625 Contact angle gage 1 off for 5A0286. Use an IAE 2J12626 Contact angle gage 1 off or equivalent for 5A6221. Use the following formulas to calculate the contact angle.

        For 5A0286: Contact Angle = arccos (0.00175 X (720 - A)).

        For 5A6221: Contact Angle = arccos (0.00350 X B).

A: Angle shown on the measuring ring (part of IAE 2J12625 Contact angle gage).

B: Angle show on the weight (part of IAE 2J12626 Contact angle gage).

        1. If the contact angle is between 26 and 30 degrees

        2. Accept

        1. Other than Step

        2. Reject

      1. Examine the axial play between the inner ring and the outer ring at free condition with a 44 lbf (20 kgf) gage load on the bearing.

        1. If the play is between 0.0047 and 0.0078 in. (0.117 and 0.200 mm)

        2. Accept

        1. Other than Step

        2. Reject

      1. Examine the internal radial clearance at three locations 120 degrees apart, with a 33 lbf (15 kgf) gage load on the bearing.

        2. Accept

        1. Other than Step

        2. Reject

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-16-220-101 Do a Hardness Test the Ball Bearing (01-600)

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Hardness test the ball bearing at location marked H.

        1. Make sure the outer ring and inner ring shows signs of having been overheated. Use a Rockwell A (HRA) tester or equivalent.

          1. If the hardness is between HRA 81.8 and 83.4

          2. Accept

          1. Other than Step
