This TASK gives the procedure to replace the location dowel on the HP compressor stage 9 case and stage 10 rotor path case assembly.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK numbers are in the Standard Practices and Processes Manual (SPM).

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-350-095 Remove the Loose or Damaged Dowel(s) - Assemblies A, B and C

      CAUTION

      DO NOT REMOVE PARENT MATERIAL FROM THE STAGE 9 CASE AND STAGE 10 ROTOR PATH CASE ASSEMBLY.
    2. Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly A.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly B.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly C.

      1. Remove the loose or damaged dowel.

      2. Use an air operated hand grinder.

        Grind off the rivet head and remove the rivet, the washer and the dowel.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-350-261 Remove the Loose or Damaged Pin - Assembly D

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Remove the loose or damaged pin.

      2. Use standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-110-151 Clean the Dowel Location Hole or Pin Location Hole

      1. Chemically clean.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-41-21-100-000 (CLEANING-000) and TASK 72-41-21-100-001 (CLEANING-001).

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-220-258 Examine the Dowel Location Hole - Assemblies A, B, C and D

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly A.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly B.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly C.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly D.

      1. Do a dimensional inspection of the dowel location hole.

      2. The hole must not be oversized.

        If the dimensions are not in the limits, reject the part.

        Use workshop inspection equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-230-104 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test around the location hole.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-02-230-501.

        Use CoMat 06-064 FLUORESCENT PENETRANT (WATER WASHABLE MEDIUM SENSITIVITY) fluorescent penetrant (water washable medium sensitivity).

        Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        If there is a crack, reject the part.

      WARNING

      DO NOT GET LIQUID NITROGEN ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. PUT ON PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, GLOVES, GOGGLES AND A MASK. LIQUID NITROGEN IS AN ASPHYXIATOR. USE THE LIQUID IN A GOOD VENTILATED AREA. IF YOU GET THE LIQUID NITROGEN ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES, FLUSH IT AWAY WITH WATER. GET MEDICAL AID IF YOUR SKIN OR EYES BECOME IRRITATED.
    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Freeze the dowel.

      2. Use UP10743 dowel HPC Ring Cases And Related Parts (72-41-21,03-825) 1 off.

        Use locally made freeze plug.

      1. Install the dowel.

      2. Use standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-350-096-B00 Install the Dowel - Assemblies B and C

      WARNING

      DO NOT GET LIQUID NITROGEN ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. PUT ON PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, GLOVES, GOGGLES AND A MASK. LIQUID NITROGEN IS AN ASPHYXIATOR. USE THE LIQUID IN A GOOD VENTILATED AREA.       2. Use UP60478 dowel HPC Ring Cases And Related Parts (72-41-21,03-825) 1 off.

        Use locally made freeze plug.

      1. Install the dowel.

      2. Use standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-350-096-C00 Install the Pin - Assembly D

      WARNING

      DO NOT GET LIQUID NITROGEN ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. PUT ON PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, GLOVES, GOGGLES AND A MASK. LIQUID NITROGEN IS AN ASPHYXIATOR. USE THE LIQUID IN A GOOD VENTILATED AREA.       2. Use AS44803 headless shoulder pin HPC Ring Cases And Related Parts (72-41-21,03-868) 1 off.

        Use locally made freeze plug.

      1. Install the pin.

      2. Use standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-350-155 Install the Universal Head Solid Rivet - Assemblies A, B and C

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly A.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly B.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly C.

      1. Install the universal head solid rivet and washer into the case and dowel.

      2. Use AS16295 universal head solid rivet HPC Ring Cases And Related Parts (72-41-21,03-822) 1 off and EY29248 washer HPC Ring Cases And Related Parts (72-41-21,03-824) 1 off as necessary.

        Use standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-390-051 Make the Head of the Rivet - Assemblies A, B and C

      CAUTION

      YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE FLANGE IS SUFFICIENTLY SUPPORTED DURING THE COLD SQUEEZE PROCESS. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY, DAMAGE TO THE COMPONENT CAN OCCUR.
    2. Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly A.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly B.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly C.

      1. Cold squeeze the universal head solid rivet in place.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-39-03-390-501.

        Use standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-220-259-A00 Examine the Case Assembly - Assemblies A, B and C

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly A.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly B.

      Refer to Figure and Figure for Assembly C.

      1. Do a dimensional inspection of the installed rivet.

      2. Make sure that the rivet is not loose and fully installed.

        Measure the dimensions of the installed rivet.

        Use workshop inspection equipment.

        If the dimensions of the installed rivet are in the limit, continue with Step.

        If the dimensions of the installed rivet are not in the limit, do the repair from Step again.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-220-686 Examine the Case Assembly - Assembly D

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Do a visual inspection of the installed pin.

      2. Make sure that the pin is not loose and fully installed.

        If the installed pin is not loose or damaged, continue with Step.

        If the installed pin is loose or damaged, do the repair from Step again.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-110-159 Chemically Clean

      1. Locally chemical clean the rivet head and dowel.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-230-105 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test on the rivet head and dowel.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-02-230-501.

        Use CoMat 06-064 FLUORESCENT PENETRANT (WATER WASHABLE MEDIUM SENSITIVITY) fluorescent penetrant (water washable medium sensitivity).

        Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        If there are cracks, do the repair from Step again.

      1. Vibration peen VRS6251 adjacent to the assembly number.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501, SUBTASK 70-09-00-400-001.

        Use vibro-engraving equipment.
