This repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in the relevant inspection procedures (identified by the applicable part number) located in section 72-41-23.

This TASK gives the procedure to repair the inside location diameter on the HP Compressor Rear Outer Case by metal spray.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-110-070 Clean the Compressor Case

      1. Chemically clean the HP Compressor Rear Outer Case.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-230-075 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test on the rear inside diameter, AB.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

      3. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-324-053 Machine the Case

    2. For Assembly A, refer to Figure and Figure. For Assembly B, refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Machine the HP Compressor Rear Outer Case inside diameter, AB.

      2. Use a locally made machining fixture and a Dial Test Indicators.

      3. Make sure that datums A and B are set to turn correctly.

      4. Remove only the minimum amount of material to true up the inside diameter.

      5. Use a Lathe or grinding machine.

        NOTE

        If a metal spray layer is applied before, make sure all the metal spray is removed.
    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-230-076 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test on the rear inside diameter, AB.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

      3. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-126 Examine the Case

    2. For Assembly A, refer to Figure and Figure. For Assembly B, refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Visually examine and measure the dimensions of the rear inside diameter, AB.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-110-071 Clean the Compressor Case

      1. Chemically clean the HP Compressor Rear Outer Case.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-350-074 Seal the Surfaces Not to be Repaired

    2. For Assembly A, refer to Figure and Figure. For Assembly B, refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Seal the surfaces not to be repaired.

      2. NOTE

        The heat resistant paper masking tape permits the blasting and sprayed coating to be done in one operation.
    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-120-054 Dry Blast the Repair Area

    2. For Assembly A, refer to Figure and Figure. For Assembly B, refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Abrasive blast the surface to be repaired, at diameter AB.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-12-02-120-501.

      3. Use the new masking tape, as necessary.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-340-053 Apply the Metal Spray

    2. For Assembly A, refer to Figure and Figure and Figure. For Assembly B, refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Apply metal spray to the rear inside diameter, AB.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-34-01-340-501, SUBTASK 70-34-01-340-021.

      3. Apply sufficient metal spray to get final machining dimensions.

    3. Remove the masking tape.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-324-054 Machine the HP Compressor Rear Outer Case

    2. For Assembly A, refer to Figure and Figure. For Assembly B, refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Machine the rear outer case inside diameter, AB.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-34-01-340-501, SUBTASK 70-34-01-340-003.

      3. Use a locally made machining fixture and Dial Test Indicators.

      4. Make sure that datums A and B are set to turn correctly.

      5. Use a Lathe or a grinding machine.

      1. Remove burrs and overspray.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-230-077 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test on the rear inside diameter, AB.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

      3. Ignore cracks in the sprayed surface.

      4. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-127 Examine the HP Compressor Rear Outer Case

    2. For Assembly A, refer to Figure and Figure. For Assembly B, refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Visually examine and measure the dimensions of the rear inside diameter, AB.

      1. Make a mark VRS6339 adjacent to the part number.
