General

This TASK gives the procedure for the inspection of the No. 4 bearing heat shield.

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC.

The policy that is necessary for inspection is given in the SPM TASK 70-20-00-200-501.

All the parts must be cleaned before any part is examined. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-10-00-100-501.

All parts must be visually examined for damage, corrosion and wear. Any defects that are not identified in the procedure must be referred to IAE.

Do not discard any part until you are sure there are no repairs available. Refer to the instructions in Repair before a discThe procedure for those parts which must have a crack test is given in SUBTASK 72-42-36-230-051. Do the test before the part is visually examined.arded part is used again or oversize parts are installed.

Parts which should be discarded can be held although no repair is available. The repair of a discarded part could be shown to be necessary at a later date.

All parts must be examined to make sure that all the repairs have been completed satisfactorily.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-230-051-001 Examine the No. 4 Bearing Heat Shield (01-010) for Cracks

    2. Clean the Part. Refer to TASK 72-42-36-100-000.

      1. Do the test for cracks on the part that is given below. Use the applicable penetrant procedures.

          1. Up to 0.025in. (0.635 mm) in depth. The dents must be smooth and have no crack indications

          1. Up to 10 percent of the material thickness in depth, 1.0 sq.in. (645.16 sq mm) areas that are not continuous. There must be no high metal

      1. Examine the heat shield at locations 2053 and 2054, for wear, thickness, and frettage on the front and rear diameters.

        1. Wear and thickness.

          1. If the material thickness is not less than 0.022 in. (0.559 mm)

          2. Accept

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-220-053 Examine the No. 4 Bearing Heat Shield (01-010) for the Front and Rear Outside Diameters

      NOTE

      You can find the average diameter with a circumference tape.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the heat shield at Location 2053, for the front outside diameter per either Step or Step.

        1. If the diameter in a free condition is between 5.940 in. and 5.973 in. (150.88 mm and 151.71 mm).

        2. Accept.

        1. If the average constrained diameter is between 5.940 in. and 5.963 in. (150.88 mm and 151.46 mm).

        2. Accept.

        3. Write down the dimension of the diameter.

        1. Other than Step or Step.

        2. Reject.

      1. Examine the heat shield at Location 2054, for the rear outside diameter per either Step or Step.

        1. If the diameter in a free condition is between 12.815 in. and 12.910 in. (325.50 mm and 327.91 mm).

        2. Accept.

        1. If the average constrained diameter is between 12.860 in. and 12.874 in. (326.64 mm and 327.00 mm).

        2. Accept.

        3. Write down the dimension of the diameter.
