Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-320-003 Prepare the Cracks for Welding

      CAUTION

      THERE ARE NO RESTRICTIONS ON THE NUMBER OF WELDS OR THEIR LOCATION EXCEPT WELDS MUST NOT INTERSECT OPENINGS. WELDS MUST BE FINISHED WHEN THEY INTERSECT DIAMETER G FOR THE DISTANCES M AND N.
    2. Rout out cracks.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-110-056 Clean the No. 4 Bearing Front Heatshield

      1. Clean the heatshield.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

      1. Wipe the repair area just before you weld it.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-310-002 Weld Repair the Cracks in the Heatshield

      1. Manually gas tungsten arc weld the repair area.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-31-13-310-501.

        Apply sufficient material to make sure you can meet the finish dimensions.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-370-002 Stress-Relieve the Heatshield

      1. Stress-relieve heatshield.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-37-01-370-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-320-004 Machine the Repaired Area

      1. Machine the repaired area to the finish dimensions.

      2. Refer to Figure.

        Make sure the weld repaired area and the existing adjacent surface are flush.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-110-057 Clean the Heatshield

      1. Clean the heatshield after finish machining.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-230-053 Fluorescent Penetrant Inspect the Repaired Area of the Heatshield

      1. FPI the repaired area of the heatshield.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

        No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-220-055 Inspect the Heatshield

      1. Inspect the heatshield after repair.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-36-350-002 Identify the Repair

      1. Make a mark VRS3661 on the repaired heatshield adjacent to the part number.

      2. Make a permanent mark by the procedure given in the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501.

        Remove high metal caused by marking the number.
