General

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/Item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

Remove and discard the lockwire before parts are disconnected or removed.

Discard all rubber seal rings, cotter pins and seal washers removed in this procedure.

Refer to TASK 72-45-00-990-501 (DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION) for a sectional view of the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly.

To identify the consumable materials, refer to the PCI.

NOTE

Special tools are identified in the procedure by the tool primary number.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-45-10-040-051 Remove the Stage 1 Turbine Seals, the Counterweights and the Stage 1 and 2 Turbine Seal

    2. Refer to: Figure

    3. Remove the stage 1 turbine seals from the front turbine hub.

    4. Remove the counterweights from the front turbine hub.

    5. Remove the stage 1 and 2 turbine seal from the stage 1 HPT blades. Discard the seal.

    1. SUBTASK 72-45-10-040-052 Remove the Stage 1 Turbine Rotor Assembly

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Attach the IAE 1P16014 Fixture 1 off to the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly.

      2. Remove the shaft from the block.

      3. Remove the bar from the block.

      4. Loosen the four nuts securing the clamps to the block.

      5. Move the clamps out of the block until they can be turned.

      6. Turn the clamps until the side of the clamp foot is in line with the adjacent block diameter (approximately 90 degrees).

      7. Hold the block assembly against the rotor face and turn the dowel pin until the clamp threaded end is pointing away from the rotor center line.

      8. The dowel pin should align with the arrows on the block face.

      9. Tighten the clamp nuts until the clock flange face touches the rotor end face.

      10. Attach the bar to the shaft with the quick release pin.

    3. Attach a hoist to the bar.

    4. Lift the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly with the hoist.

    5. Attach the bar to the block assembly with the quick release pin, Figure.

    3. Install the IAE 1P16163 Fixture 6 off around the OD of the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly, Figure.

    4. Attach a hoist to the bar which is below the assembly.

    5. Turn the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly with the two hoists so that the samll end is up.

    6. Lower the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly in to the IAE 1P16146 Base 1 off, Figure. Make sure the turbine front hub is in the center of the base.

    7. Remove the IAE 1P16014 Fixture 1 off from the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly.

    8. Remove the IAE 1P16163 Fixture 6 off from the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly.

    1. SUBTASK 72-45-10-040-054 Remove the Stage 1 HPT Blades, Seals and Dampers

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Apply sufficient CoMat 10-058 PENETRATING OIL to blade roots and hub attachment and let it soak to a amaximum of three hours for very dirty blade roots. You apply again the CoMat 10-058 PENETRATING OIL immediately before you push out the blades.

    4. Carefully loosen the dampers HPT Stage 1 Blade And Related Parts (72-45-14,01-020) that are between the blades with pliers.

    5. CAUTION

      MAKE SURE YOU APPLY NECESSARY FORCE TO THE BLADE ROOT PLATFORM AREA TO REMOVE THE BLADES FROM THE HUB. DO NOT APPLY FORCE TO THE LEADING OR TRAILING EDGE OF THE AIRFOIL. YOU CAN DAMAGE THE AIRFOIL SECTIONS OF THE BLADE IF YOU HIT THE BLADES IN THIS AREA.

      CAUTION

      WHEN THE BLADES ARE PUSHED OUT FROM THE HUB, THE RELATIVE MOVEMENT BETWEEN BLADES MUST BE KEPT TO LESS THAN 0.100 IN. (2.54 MM). MORE RELATIVE MOVEMENT WILL CAUSE DAMAGE WHEN THE DAMPER POST COMES IN CONTACT WITH THE HUB.

      CAUTION

      USE TOOLS THAT WILL NOT DAMAGE THE HUB WHEN YOU REMOVE THE BLADES FROM THE HUB. METAL DRIFTS AND HAMMERS THAT CONTACT THE HUB CAN DAMAGE THE HUB MORE THAN THE SERVICEABLE LIMITS.

      Carefully apply force to the blade root with soft material drift to result in an axial movement of approximately 0.060 to 0.100 in. (1.52 to 2.54 mm), then continue to adjacent blade and do it again. The inital force that you apply cannot result in movement of the blade, but the force applied to get axial movement of the blades must be increased gradually in order to prevent damage to the blades. You do this procedure again, going to the next adjacent blade and you do it again, going around the rotor sometimes. Once the blades are moved to 0.400 to 0.600 in. (10.20 to 15.20 mm), more movement between the blades can be permitted and you must apply less force.

    1. SUBTASK 72-45-10-040-055 Install the Stage 1 Turbine Rotor Assembly in to the Heater

    2. Install the IAE 1P16014 Fixture 1 off on the stage 1 HPT turbine rotor assembly. Refer to Step.

    3. Attach a hoist to the fixture.

    4. Lift the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly from the IAE 1P16146 Base 1 off.

    5. Lower the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly in to the IAE 1P16038 Heater 1 off.

    6. Connect the IAE 6F10027 Heater control unit 1 off to the heater. Make sure the ID of the hub is in the center of the base.

    7. Adjust the thermocouple so that it touches the turbine front hub.

    8. Remove the IAE 1P16014 Fixture from the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly.

    1. SUBTASK 72-45-10-040-056 Remove the Stage 1 HPT Airseal (Inner)

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Install the IAE 1P16027 Puller 1 off on to the stage 1 turbine rotor assembly as follows:

      2. Loosen the screws securing the three jaws to the plate.

      3. Remove the ring from around the jaws and move the jaws outward to the stop.

      4. Lower the puller and put the puck in the hub end, against the spline face.

      5. CAUTION

        DO NOT DAMAGE THE SEAL KNIFE EDGES WITH THE RING ON THE PULLER.

        Move the jaws in to locate them behind the third knife edge of the stage 1 HPT airseal (inner).

      6. Move the ring over the three jaws until it seals against the jaw face. This locks the jaws behind the shoulder of the knife edges.

        NOTE

        The rotor parts may be heated to 300 deg F (149 deg C) to permit disassembly. Minimum differece in temperature between the parts must be 100 deg F (39 deg C).
    3. Attach the hose from the IAE 1F10018 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the puller.

    4. Heat the parts as required to permit disassembly.

    5. Actuate the hydraulic pump and remove the stage 1 HPT airseal (inner).

    6. Remove the damper from the stage 1 HPT airseal (inner), Figure.

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Install the IAE 1P16008 Fixture 1 off or IAE 1P17750 Fixture 1 off as follows:

      2. Use a hoist and IAE 1F10052 Two cables sling 1 off to put the ring slotted end down on the stage 1 HPT airseal (outer).

      3. Put the stage 1 HPT airseal in position so the four tabs do not line up with the slots in the ring.

      4. Install the 36 clamps and align the taper on the clamp with the taper on the ring.

      5. Attach the ring with the washers and the capscrews.

      6. Install the plate assembly so the blocks touch the stage 1 HPT airseal and the slots in the plate align with the slots in the turbine front hub.

      7. Align the bolt holes in the plate with the bolt holes in the ring.

      8. Attach the plate to the ring with the capscrews and the washers.

      9. Tighten the capscrews until there is no gap between the plate and the ring.

    3. Cool the airseal with dry ice.

    4. Turn the fixture and move the stage 1 HPT airseal to the unlock position.

    5. Remove the stage 1 HPT airseal and the fixture from the stage 1 HPT hub. Discard the seal.

    6. Remove the stage 1 HPT damper from the stage 1 HPT airseal (outer), Figure.

    7. Remove the fixture from the stage 1 HPT airseal.

    8. Remove the turbine front hub from the heater.

    1. SUBTASK 72-45-10-040-065 Remove and Discard All of the Stage 1 HPT Metering Plugs

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Remove and discard all of the stage 1 HPT metering plugs HPT Stage 1 Rotor Assembly (72-45-10,01-040).

      2. If the metering plugs are missing, damaged, and/or have missing or cracked tangs, inspect the No. 4 bearing rear carbon seal. Refer to TASK 72-43-20-200-002. Report all findings to IAE Technical Services.
