Before strut removal, hold the dimensional relationship between the inner and outer stand-up reference features to a minimum. This will prevent movement of the parts.

As necessary, remove any adjacent hardware, which will interfere with or be affected by the strut replacement such as tubing, mount rail bushings or nut plate details.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK numbers are in the SPM.

NOTE

To identify the consumable materials, refer to the PCI.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-175 Scribe the Damaged Strut

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Put the exhaust case (01-001) on a bench. Scribe the damaged strut as follows:

        1. Scribe the cut line adjacent to the strut attachment welds at the strut leading edge and trailing edge.

        2. Refer to Figure.

          NOTE

Make sure the line is scribed on the strut to be replaced, not on the strut stand-up.
      2. Use a straight-edge and scriber and connect the scribed lines to get a referenced cutting plane line.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-176 Cut the Damaged Strut

      WARNING

USE EYE PROTECTION WHEN YOU USE A CUT-OFF WHEEL OR GRINDER OR INJURY TO THE PERSON COULD OCCUR.

      CAUTION

DO NOT REMOVE MORE THAN ONE STRUT AT A TIME.
      1. Cut the damaged strut along the scribed lines and remove the damaged strut.

      2. Use a hand-held cut-off wheel or other suitable grinder.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-320-138 Machine the Unwanted Material

      1. Machine the unwanted material at strut cut planes to the initial lug dimensions.

      2. Refer to Figure.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-320-139 Machine the Material to Fit the Replacement Strut

      1. Machine off the material from the outer diameter of the strut to fit the replacement strut.

      2. The gap between the fitted parts must not be more than 0.060 in. (1.524 mm).

        NOTE

The replacement strut detail has been manufactured with approximately 0.040 in. (1.016 mm) additional material on the inner diameter. This material may or may not have to be removed for proper fit.
    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-320-140 Polish the Surfaces to be Welded

      1. Polish the surfaces to be welded to give a good finish.

      2. Use an aluminum oxide rag wheel.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-110-144 Clean Areas to be Welded

      1. Clean the areas to be welded.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-310-082 Tack Weld the Strut

      1. Tack weld the strut in position 1.50 - 2.00 in. (38.1 - 50.8 mm) at each inner and outer stand-up.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-31-02-310-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-177 Remove Clamping Tools

    2. Remove the clamping tools that are used to hold the case dimensional features from movement when the strut is removed.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-110-145 Clean the Tack Welds

      1. Clean the tack welds.

      2. Use a stainless steel brush or aluminum oxide rag wheel.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-178 Clean the Areas to be Welded

      1. Clean the areas to be welded.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-179 Weld the Replacement Strut

      1. Weld the replacement strut to the stand-ups.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-31-02-310-501.

Use the manual gas tungsten arc (TIG) method and CoMat 03-378 WELDING WIRE.

        Refer to Figure.

        NOTE

These welds must blend and be continuous.
    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-180 Replace Other Damaged Struts

      1. Replace any other damaged struts as necessary, one at a time.

      2. Use the same procedure that was used above.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-230-120 Do a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection

      1. Optional: Do a fluorescent penetrant inspection of the weld areas.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-370-090 Do a Local Stress Relief

      1. Do a local stress relief to the welded areas.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-37-13-370-501.

        Use cycle 6A.

        NOTE

Furnace stress relieve permitted but subsequent full fluorescent penetrant inspection is necessary.
    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-230-121 Do a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection

      1. Do a fluorescent penetrant inspection of the repaired areas.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

        No cracks are permitted.

        NOTE

Fluorescent penetrant inspection of the entire case is necessary if full stress relieve was used.
    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-190 Identify the Repair

      1. Mark VRS5396 adjacent to the part number.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501.

Use vibration peening or engraving method.

Remove metal lifted by the marking.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-53-350-181 Close Up

    2. If necessary, install any tubing, mount rail bushings or nut-plate detail parts that were removed to permit the welding or local stress relieve.

    3. Make sure all other engine manual requirements are met.
