TASK 70-31-19-300-503 Removal Of Brazing Flux

General

This task gives instructions for the removal of approved fluxes from parts that are brazed as specified in this manual. They must not be used for the removal of fluxes or parts that are not specified in the applicable Engine Manual.

NOTE

To identify the consumable materials refer to the PCI.

IF SODIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTION GETS INTO THE EYES, FULLY FLUSH THEM WITH CLEAN WATER AND THEN GET MEDICAL AID IMMEDIATELY.

WARNING

A SUPPLY OF BUFFERED PHOSPHATE SOLUTION MUST ALWAYS BE IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE, TO APPLY TO BURNS.

WARNING

CAREFULLY ADD TO WATER THE COMPOUNDS WHICH CONTAIN SOLID SODIUM HYDROXIDE, BECAUSE HEAT IS RELEASED WHEN THE COMPOUND DISSOLVES. MAKE MUCH MOVEMENT OF THE SOLUTION, WITH AIR OR MECHANICAL METHODS, AS YOU ADD THE COMPOUND TO THE SURFACE OF THE SOLUTION. DO NOT ADD LARGE QUANTITIES OF THE COMPOUND TO ONE SMALL AREA OF THE TANK BECAUSE THE SOLUTION WILL BOIL.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 70-31-19-300-001 Remove the Flux with a Sodium Hydroxide Solution

    2. This subtask is used to remove the flux from parts that are brazed with CoMat 03-004 INTERM. TEMP. BRAZINGWIRE, 24% Ag and CoMat 03-005 BRAZING FLUX.

    3. NOTE

      To make the flux removal easier, austenitic parts can be put into water, when they are below black heat but above local air temperature.

      When the parts are at local air temperature, clean the parts in clean boiling water to remove most of the flux.

    4. NOTE

      If the flux is not easy to remove, use a fiber or wire brush.

      Soak the parts in a solution of CoMat 01-022 SODIUM HYDROXIDE NaOH (SOLID) (refer to the SPM TASK 70-31-19-100-501 or SPM TASK 70-11-05-100-501) at a temperature of 194 to 212 deg F (90 to 100 deg C) or alkaline derusting solutions (refer to SPM TASK 70-11-11-100-501) at a temperature of 176 to 194 deg F (80 to 90 deg C). Soak the parts until all the flux is removed.

    5. Flush the parts in clean cold water and then soak in boiling water and let the parts become dry. Alternatively, soak the parts in CoMat 10-008 DEWATERING OIL (HOT), or CoMat 10-009 DEWATERING FLUID (COLD), or CoMat 10-010 DEWATERING FLUID (COLD), or CoMat 10-011 DEWATERING FLUID (COLD), or CoMat 10-012 DEWATERING FLUID (COLD), or CoMat 10-013 DEWATERING FLUID (COLD). Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-05-380-501.

    1. SUBTASK 70-31-19-110-001 Removal of Flux with TASK 70-11-13-300-503

    2. Flux can be removed from parts with the SPM TASK 70-11-13-300-503, which specifies the permitted solutions and procedure to remove the flux.
