This Repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in 72-41-11 Inspection.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK numbers are in the SPM.

This TASK gives the procedure to repair the self locking shank nut on the HP compressor stage 3-8 drum by replacement.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-110-134 Chemically Clean the Area

    2. CAUTION

      THE STAGE 3-8 DRUM IS A CRITICAL PART AND CAN BE MADE UNSERVICEABLE IF DAMAGED.

      Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Chemically clean the area around the shank nuts.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

      3. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-323-051 Remove the Shank Nut(s)

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Drill the flare until the nut is released.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-35-11-300-501.

      3. Make sure the drill is centered on the shank nut hole and will not touch the parent part.

      4. Use a drilling machine with a 0.315 in. (8.00 mm) diameter drill.

      1. Remove the nut.

      2. Discard the removed nut.

      1. Clean the nut location.

      2. Use a soft, clean cloth and also remove particles with clean air.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

      3. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-220-095 Examine the Anti-frettage Plate and Nut Location Hole

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Examine the anti-frettage plate.

      2. If damaged, reject the plate after you remove the remaining shank nuts which hold the plate.

      1. Do a visual and dimensional inspection of the nut location hole.

      2. Damage is not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-230-066 Do a Crack Test

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Do a local penetrant crack test in the area of the repair.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-503.

      3. Use CoMat 06-022 FLUORESCENT PENETRANT (POST-EMULSIFIED ULTRA HIGH SENSITIVITY) fluorescent penetrant (post-emulsified ultra high sensitivity).

      4. Use penetrant crack test equipment.

      5. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-110-085 Chemically Clean

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Chemically clean the repaired area to remove fluorescent penetrant.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-503.

      3. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-350-067 Install the New Shank Nuts

    2. CAUTION

      THE TOOLING USED TO INSTALL THE NEW SHANK NUT OF SBE 72-0606 STANDARD MUST NOT BE USED TO REMOVE OR INSTALL THE SHANK NUT OF PRE SBE 72-0606 STANDARD. THIS IS TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO SILVER CONTAMINATION ON THE TOOLING.

      Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Install the new nut and anti-frettage plate into the location hole.

      2. Use nut self locking shank HPC Stage 3 - 8 Drum Disk And Wire Seals (72-41-11, 01-238) with anti-frettage plate HPC Stage 3 - 8 Drum Disk And Wire Seals (72-41-11, 01-240) as necessary.

      3. Make sure the shank nut is set at the correct position.

      1. Hold the nut and swage the flare.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-220-308 Examine the Repaired Shank Nut

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Examine the repaired shank nut.

      2. If the shank nut is loose or damaged, do the Step to Step again.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-11-350-104 Identify the Repair

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Make a mark VRS6220 in the area BC.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501, SUBTASK 70-09-00-400-001.
