This Repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in 72-41-21 Inspection.

This TASK gives the procedure to replace the retainer hard coating on the HP compressor stage 12 rotor path ring, when the coating is worn or damaged.

TASKS identified by SPM TASK are in the Standard Practices and Processes Manual (SPM).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-350-126 Seal the Lining

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Seal the lined surface AF.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-110-115 Remove the Surface Protection (as necessary)

      1. Remove the surface protection, as necessary.

      2. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    2. NOTE

      It is not necessary to apply the surface protection again after you do this repair.
    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-110-116 Remove the Hard Coat

      NOTE

      This SUBTASK is an alternative procedure to Step or Step or Step.

      1. Chemically remove the hard coat AE from surface AD.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-33-59-300-503, SUBTASK 70-33-59-300-007.

      3. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

      1. Abrasive blast to remove the hard coat.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-59-300-503, SUBTASK 70-33-59-300-008.

      2. Use IAE 3R18232 Lifting beam 1 off, to install IAE 3R18724 Turn/Grind Fixture 1 off in the lathe.

      3. Use a dial test indicator.

      1. Install the HP compressor rotor path ring on the fixture.

      2. Make sure the ring runs true.

      1. Turn to remove the hard coat AE from surface AD.

      2. You must not remove metal from the rotor path ring.

      3. Use a lathe with standard workshop tools.

      1. Remove burrs.

      2. Use standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-325-066-B00 Remove the Hard Coat, Assembly B

      NOTE

      This SUBTASK is an alternative procedure to Step.

      1. Install the turn/grind fixture on to the machine and set to run true.

      2. Use IAE 3R18232 Lifting beam 1 off, to install IAE 3R19120 Turn/Grind Fixture 1 off in the lathe.

      3. Use a dial test indicator.

      2. Make sure the ring runs true.

      1. Turn to remove the hard coat AE from surface AD.

      2. You must not remove metal from the rotor path ring.

      2. Make sure all the hard coat material is removed.

      1. Measure the dimensions of surface AD.

      2. Make sure that the base material of the rotor path ring is not less than the limits given.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-230-129 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a penetrant crack test on the machined area.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501.

      3. Use penetrant crack test equipment.

      4. Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-110-117 Chemically Clean

      1. Chemically clean the rotor path ring.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.

      3. Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-120-061 Abrasive Blast

      CAUTION

      DO NOT TOUCH THE AREAS TO BE REPAIRED AFTER THEY ARE FULLY CLEANED.

      CAUTION

      CLEAN COTTON OR POLYTHENE GLOVES MUST BE WORN.
    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Mask the areas not to be sprayed.

      1. Abrasive blast the rotor path ring of surface AD.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-12-02-120-501.

      3. Use abrasive blast equipment.

    3. Remove masking tape.

      1. Clean the rotor path ring.

      2. Make sure that all the abrasive grit is removed.

      3. Use a dry air blast or a vacuum assisted brush.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-340-060 Apply the Hard Coat

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Mask the areas not to be sprayed.

      1. Apply the hard coat to surface AD.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-34-01-340-501, SUBTASK 70-34-01-340-026.

      3. Use metal spray equipment.

      4. Apply a layer of sufficient thickness to get the correct dimensions after the assembly is machined.

    3. Remove the masking tape.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-21-220-287 Examine the Hard Coat

      1. Visually examine and measure the dimensions of the new coat.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-34-01-340-501.

      1. Install the turn/grind fixture to the machine and set to run true.

      1. Install the HP Compressor rotor path ring on the fixture.

      2. Make sure the ring runs true.

    3. Fully grind the hard coat at AE to the dimensions shown.
