This Repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in 72-41-23 Inspection/Check.

This TASK gives the procedure to repair the HP compressor rear outer case assembly by the replacement of the lining.

TASKs identified by SPM TASK are in the Standard Practices and Processes Manual (SPM).

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-110-062 Remove the Surface Protection (as necessary) from the Area to be Repaired

      1. Remove the surface protection.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-41-23-100-003, SUBTASK 72-41-23-110-058.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-330-001 Remove the Lining

      CAUTION

      SURFACES FOR REPAIR MUST BE FULLY CLEANED AND NOT TOUCHED BY HAND. CLEAN COTTON OR POLYTHENE GLOVES MUST BE WORN.
    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. NOTE

        This SUBTASK is an alternative to Step.

        Chemically degrade the lining at area identified AD.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-59-300-503, SUBTASK 70-33-59-300-007.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

      1. Abrasive blast the area identified AD.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-59-300-503, SUBTASK 70-33-59-300-008.

        Use abrasive blast equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-325-051 Remove the Lining

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. NOTE

        This SUBTASK is an alternative to Step.

        Install the turn/grind fixture on to the machine and set to run true.

      2. Use IAE 3R18658 Turn/Grind fixture 1 off with lathe.

        Use a dial test indicator.

      1. Install the HP compressor rear outer case on the fixture.

      2. Make sure that datum A is set to turn correctly.

      1. Turn to remove the lining from the area identified AD.

      2. You must not remove the metal from the rear outer case.

        Use a lathe with standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-115 Examine the Rear Outer Case Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Visually examine and measure the dimensions of the rear outer case at repair area.

      2. Make sure all the lining material and corrosion are removed.

        Make sure the dimensions are in the limits.

      1. If the dimensions are more than the limits.

      2. Reject.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-230-070 Do a Crack Test

      1. Do a penetrant crack test on the repaired area(s).

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

        Use penetrant crack test equipment.

        Cracks are not permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-110-064 Chemically clean

      1. Chemically clean the rear outer case.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-120-051 Abrasive Blast the Rear Outer Case Assembly

      CAUTION

      SURFACES FOR REPAIR MUST BE FULLY CLEANED AND NOT TOUCHED BY HAND. CLEAN COTTON OR POLYTHENE GLOVES MUST BE WORN.
    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Seal the areas not to be repaired.

      1. Abrasive blast the rear outer case on area AD.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-12-02-120-501.

    3. Remove masking tape and/or masks.

      1. Clean the blasted area.

      2. Use a dry air blast or a vacuum assisted brush.

        Make sure that all the abrasive grit is removed.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-205-A00 Examine the Rear Outer Case Assembly, Assembly A

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Measure the diameter AC to calculate the repair area.

      2. If the diameter is less than or equal to 23.2580 in. (590.762 mm), continue the repair from Step.

        If the diameter is more than 23.2580 in. (590.762 mm) but less than 23.2860 in. (591.464 mm), continue the repair.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-205-B00 Examine the Rear Outer Case Assembly, Assembly C

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Measure the diameter AC to calculate the repair area.

      2. If the diameter is less than or equal to 23.2580 in. (590.762 mm), continue the repair from Step.

        If the diameter is more than 23.2580 in. (590.762 mm) but less than 23.2860 in. (591.464 mm), continue the repair.

      1. Measure the diameter AF to calculate the repair area.

      2. If the diameter is less than or equal to 23.1808 in. (588.792 mm), continue the repair from Step.

        If the diameter is more than 23.1808 in. (588.792 mm) but less than 23.2078 in. (589.478 mm), continue the repair.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-340-055 Apply the Plasma Spray (Bond Coat) to the HP Compressor Rear Outer Case Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Seal the areas not to be sprayed.

      1. Apply the plasma spray to area AD.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-34-03-340-501.

        Apply a bond coat of sufficient thickness to get the correct dimensions after the top coat is applied.

    3. NOTE

      Top coat thickness must be between 0.0032 and 0.0098 in. (0.080 and 0.250 mm) after final machining and remaining thickness must be build by bond coat.

      Remove masking tape and/or masks.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-207 Examine the Repair Area

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Examine and measure the dimensions at repair area.

      2. Examine the coated area for chips, cracks, lifted material coating that is not attached to the base metal and surfaces that show heat cracks.

        Make sure the dimensions are in the limits.

        Use workshop inspection equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-340-051 Apply the Lining to the HP Compressor Rear Outer Case Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Seal the areas not to be sprayed.

      1. Apply the lining to area AD.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-34-01-340-501, SUBTASK 70-34-01-340-026.

        Apply a layer of sufficient thickness to get the correct dimensions after the assembly is machined.

    3. Remove the masking tape and/or masks.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-116 Examine the Lining

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Visually examine and measure the dimensions of the new lining.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-34-01-340-501.

        Use workshop inspection equipment.

        Make sure the dimensions are in the limits.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-324-051 Machine the Lining

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Install the turn/grind fixture on a grinding machine and set to turn correctly.

      2. Use IAE 3R18658 Turn/Grind fixture 1 off with a grinding machine and a dial test indicator.

      1. Install the HP compressor rear outer case on to the fixture.

      2. Make sure that datum A is set to turn correctly.

    3. Fully grind the lining at AD to the dimensions shown.

      1. Remove burrs.

      2. Use standard workshop equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-117 Examine the Repair Area

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Visually examine and measure the dimensions at AD.

      2. Use workshop inspection equipment.

      1. If the dimensions are more than the limits.

      2. Reject.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-110-065 Chemically clean

      1. Chemically clean the rear outer case.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-01-300-503.

        Use chemical cleaning equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-350-062 Identify the Repair

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Make a mark VRS6179 adjacent to the part number.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501, SUBTASK 70-09-00-400-001.

        Use vibro-engraving equipment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-380-058 Re-apply the Surface Protection

      1. Apply the surface protection again.

      2. Repair VRS6178, TASK 72-41-23-300-003 (REPAIR-003).
