      NOTE

If this repair has been done before remove bushings as follows:
      1. Drill or machine the manufactured end of rivets so that the remainder can be punched out.

      2. Do not enlarge flange hole when machining or drilling pin shank.

        NOTE

Avoid damaging the seal housing when drifting pin from flange.
      1. Do an inspection of the rivet holes.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-39-03-390-501.

      1. Continue with step 7.

      2. Refer to Step.

        OR.

    2. If the flange rivet hole is damaged or worn proceed with the steps that follow.

    1. SUBTASK 72-43-20-320-063 Remove the Carbon Detail

      1. Drill three equally spaced 0.125 in. (3.175 mm) diameter holes in the carbon.

      2. Be careful not to drill into the metal housing.

    2. Pry the carbon off of the assembly from these drilled holes so that it breaks away.

      OR.

      1. Heat assembly to relax the tight fit.

      2. Heat to 900 deg F plus or minus 50 deg F (482 deg C plus or minus 10 deg C).

    3. Remove carbon from metal carrier.

    1. SUBTASK 72-43-20-350-072 If the Rivet Holes must be Restored to Repair Wear or to get the Correct Position of the new Bushings, do the Following

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. If necessary, repair the rivet holes.

        1. Use a clean austenitic stainless steel brush or silicon carbide abrasives to remove oxides from the repair area for welding.

        2. Refer to Index in Figure.

        1. Clean the repair area.

        2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

        1. Weld the rivet holes.

        2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-31-13-310-501. Use CoMat 03-392 WELDING WIRE and the Manual Gas Tungsten Arc (GTAW-MA) method.

      2. Machine/grind the welds at the rivet holes on both sides of the flange.

        1. Do a stress relieve of the face seal assembly.

        2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-37-07-370-501.

        1. Check hardness at one location.

        2. Refer to Index 11 in Figure.

25 to 38 HRC is acceptable.

        1. Do a fluorescent penetrant inspection of the face seal assembly.

        1. Do a dimensional inspection of the carbon interface bore.

        2. Refer to Figure.

        1. Clean the repair area.

        2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-43-20-320-064 Machine the Slots

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Machine the slots in housing and flange thickness at location E to accept bushing PN 2A3857.

      1. If you use a P-sized bushing.

      2. Do a machine operation of the slot width to the limits given in Figure.

    4. Locally make a bushing to the limits given in Figure and Figure.

    1. SUBTASK 72-43-20-350-069 Position the Bushings

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Position the bushings at the two slots on housing machined in step 7.

      2. Refer to Step and Figure.

        NOTE

Maintain true position of bushing in slot by Figure, Index 2, 4 and 7, and true position of machined slot, shown in Figure.
      1. Secure the bushings with rivets.

      2. Refer to Figure.

Refer to the SPM TASK 70-39-03-390-501, but it is permitted for the rivet head to be minus 0.010 in. (0.25 mm) to plus 0.005 in. (0.13 mm) above the part surface afer riveting.

        NOTE

The minimum edge distance requirements of the SPM TASK 70-39-03-390-501 are waived.
