General

This TASK gives the procedure for the inspection of the No. 3 bearing.

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC.

The policy that is necessary for inspection is given in SPM TASK 70-20-00-200-501.

All the parts must be cleaned before any part is examined. Refer to SPM TASK 70-10-00-100-501.

All parts must be visually examined for damage, corrosion and wear. Any defects that are not identified in the procedure must be referred to IAE.

Do not discard any part until you are sure there are no repairs available. Refer to the instructions in Repair before a discarded part is used again or oversize parts are installed.

Parts which should be discarded can be held although no repair is available. The repair of a discarded part could be shown to be necessary at a later date.

All parts must be examined to make sure that all the repairs have been completed satisfactorily.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-24-220-051 Examine the No. 3 Bearing (01-100) for the Visual Defects

      1. Examine the bearing for the visual defects by the procedure given in SPM TASK 70-29-01-290-501.

        1. Visual defects.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-24-220-052 Examine the No. 3 Bearing (01-100) for the Average Inner Diameter

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the bearing for the average inner diameter at Location 3 on each of the land surfaces.

        1. If the average dimension at Locations 4 and 7 is between 5.9052 in. and 5.9060 in. (149.9921 mm and 150.0124 mm).

        2. Accept.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-24-220-053 Examine the No. 3 Bearing (01-100) for the Average Outer Diameter

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the bearing average outer diameter at Location 1.

        1. If the average dimension is between 8.3869 in. and 8.3873 in. (213.0273 mm and 213.0374 mm).

        2. Accept.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-24-220-054 Examine the No. 3 Bearing (01-100) for the Internal Radial Clearance

      1. Examine the bearing for the internal radial clearance by the procedure given in SPM TASK 70-29-01-290-501. Use a 60 lb (27.24 kg) radial load.

        1. If the clearance is between 0.0066 in. and 0.0082 in. (0.168 mm and 0.208 mm).

        2. Accept.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-24-220-057 Examine the No. 3 Bearing (01-100) for the Hardness of the Inner and Outer Races

      NOTE

      Only do the hardness check if the bearing shows signs of high temperature discoloration.
    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Examine the bearing for hardness at Locations 2, 8 and 10. Use a Rockwell A tester, or equivalent. Do the test on a non-functional surface.

        1. If the hardness is between 60 HRC and 62 HRC average, or equivalent or 59 HRC and 63 HRC absolute, or equivalent.

        2. Accept.
