This TASK gives the procedure to restore the surface condition of the HP Compressor Stage 3 to 12 Rotor Blade Airfoils by glass bead peening or ceramic bead peening.

This repair must only be done when the instruction to do so is given in the relevant inspection procedures (identified by the applicable part number) located in section 72-41-15.

Each HP Compressor Stage 3 to 12 Blade can only have this repair applied to it three times.

Where reference is made to a SUBTASK within a TASK in the form "TASK, SUBTASK" the operator must read and apply the complete TASK. The SUBTASK is listed only when the TASK gives options for the processing of the component. The specified SUBTASK instructs what option must be used during application of the TASK for the successful completion of the Repair Scheme VRS6150.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK/SUBTASK numbers are in the SPM.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-15-220-237 Examine for Previous Applications of the Repair

    2. Refer to the relevant figures listed in Paragraph.

      1. Visually examine the HP Compressor Stage 3 to 12 Rotor Blades to see if VRS6150 has been applied previously.

        1. Examine the component for the repair identification symbol, 2 and any suffixes.

          1. If 2 and /2 is engraved adjacent to the part number.

          2. Reject.

          1. If there is no repair identification symbol or if 2 is engraved with /1 or with no suffix.

          2. Continue with the repair.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-15-110-112 Degrease the Component

      1. Clean the HP Compressor Stage 3 to 12 Rotor Blades by aqueous degreasing.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-15-380-092 Glass Bead Peen the Airfoil Surfaces

      NOTE

      Step is given as an alternative process to Step. Only one of the processes needs to be applied.
    2. Refer to the relevant figures listed in Paragraph.

      1. Controlled glass bead peen the identified surface(s) of the HP Compressor Stages 3 to 12 Rotor Blades.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-38-04-300-503, SUBTASK 70-38-04-300-002.

      3. The glass bead peening process must achieve a datum coverage of 200 percent on the indicated surface(s).

      4. The glass bead peening process should have an Almen intensity of 0.007 in.- 0.011 in. (0.18 mm - 0.28 mm) using Almen strip N.

    3. Remove and discard the masking tape, if necessary.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-15-380-094 Ceramic Bead Peen the Airfoil Surfaces

      NOTE

      If the HP Compressor Stage 3 to 12 Rotor Blades is already identified with the repair identification symbol, 2 , from a previous repair application, only the suffix number needs to be updated.
      1. Vibro-engrave 2 at the indicated location(s) on the HP Compressor Stage 3 to 12 Rotor Blades.

      2. Refer to SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501 SUBTASK 70-09-00-400-001.

      1. Vibro-engrave the correct suffix number adjacent to the repair identification symbol.

        1. If this is the first application of the repair.

        2. No suffix number is required.

        1. If this is the second application of the repair scheme.

        2. Vibro-engrave /1 adjacent to the repair identification symbol.

        1. If this is the third application of the repair scheme.

        2. Strike through the /1 and vibro-engrave /2 adjacent to the repair identification symbol, i.e; 2/2.

      1. Remove raised material, burrs and/or sharp edges at the vibro-peen marking area.
