Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-110-058 Clean the No. 4 Bearing Front Cooling Duct

      1. Clean the cooling duct.

      2. Refer to TASK 72-42-35-100-000 (CLEANING-000).

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-320-002 Machine the Damaged Area of the No. 4 Bearing Front Cooling Duct

      1. Machine or blend to remove the damaged spacer.

      2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

        Cut at the initial weld line to remove the damaged spacer.

        Maintain a maximum diameter of 0.765 in. (19.431 mm) after you remove the spacer.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-370-054 Locally Fabricate and Heat Treat the Spacer

      1. Locally fabricate the spacer from AMS 5662 to the dimensions given in Figure.

      2. Thread the spacer stud to 0.190-32 UNJF-3A.

      3. Only rolled threads are permitted. Surface roughness of the rolled threads must be not more than 32 microinches (0.8 micrometers) before you apply coat.

      1. Heat treat the spacer.

      2. Do the procedure in the SPM TASK 70-37-32-370-501.

      1. Perform hardness check on the spacer.

      2. Hardness must be Rockwell C36 minimum or equivalent.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-110-059 Clean the Repair Area of the No. 4 Bearing Front Cooling Duct

      1. Clean the area to be welded.

      2. Use a rotary austenitic stainless steel wire brush or a Silicon carbide wheel to remove oxides. Refer to SPM TASK 70-31-13-310-501.

      3. Clean the repair area. Refer to SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-310-053 Weld the Locally Fabricated Spacer into the No. 4 Bearing Front Cooling Duct

    2. Put the spacer in position.

      1. Weld the spacer to the cooling duct.

      2. Refer to Figureand Figure.

        Do the procedure in the SPM TASK 70-31-13-310-501.

        Use the manual gas tungsten arc weld method.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-230-056 Examine the No. 4 Bearing Front Cooling Duct After Weld Repair

      1. Do a fluorescent penetrant inspection of the repair area.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501 (medium sensitivity).

        No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-370-053 Stress-Relieve the No. 4 Bearing Front Cooling Duct

      1. Stress-relieve the cooling duct.

      2. Do the procedure in the SPM TASK 70-37-01-370-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-220-057 Examine the No. 4 Bearing Front Cooling Duct

      1. Do a fluorescent penetrant inspection of the cooling duct.

      2. Do the procedure in the SPM TASK 70-23-01-230-501 or SPM TASK 70-23-02-230-501.

        No cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-220-059 Do a Hardness Check on the No. 4 Bearing Front Cooling Duct

      1. Do a hardness check on the parent material adjacent to the welded spacer.

      2. The hardness must be Rockwell C36 minimum or equivalent.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-220-062 Examine the No. 4 Bearing Front Cooling Duct

      1. Examine the diameters of the cooling duct and the location of the spacer(s).

      2. Refer to Figure and TASK 72-42-35-200-000 (INSPECTION/CHECK).

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-380-002 Apply Antigalling Compound on the Spacer Threads

    2. CAUTION

      YOU MUST DO Step AFTER YOU COMPLETE ALL THE INSPECTIONS AND APPLICABLE REPAIRS AND BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE PART INTO THE ENGINE.

      Refer to Figure.

      1. Apply antigalling compound on the spacer threads.

    1. SUBTASK 72-42-35-350-057 Identify the Repair

      1. Make a mark VRS3648 adjacent to the part number.

      2. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501.

        Use the vibro-engraving method.
