General

This TASK gives the procedure for the inspection of the No. 4 bearing.

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC.

The policy that is necessary for inspection is given in the SPM TASK 70-20-00-200-501.

All the parts must be cleaned before any part is examined. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-10-00-100-501.

All parts must be visually examined for damage, corrosion and wear. Any defects that are not identified in the procedure must be referred to IAE.

Do not discard any part until you are sure there are no repairs available.

Refer to the instructions in Repair before a discarded part is used again or oversize parts are installed.

Parts which should be discarded can be held although no repair is available. The repair of a discarded part could be shown to be necessary at a later date.

All parts must be examined to make sure that all the repairs have been completed satisfactorily.

Repair VRS3526 (TASK 72-43-13-300-003) applies only to bearings 2A0001 and 2A0003. Bearing 2A0006 must be rejected whenever the bearing fails an examination, rather than be repaired by VRS3526.

      1. Examine the bearing for the visual defects by the procedure given in the SPM TASK 70-29-01-290-501.

    1. SUBTASK 72-43-13-220-052 Examine the No. 4 Bearing (01-010) for the Average Inner Diameter

    2. Refer to: Figure

      1. Examine the bearing for the average inner diameter at location 2227.

        1. If the diameter is between 5.1175 and 5.1181in. (129.9845 and 129.9997 mm)

        2. Accept

        3. Write down the dimension of the diameter.

        1. If the diameter is between 5.1175 and 5.1188in. (129.0845 and 130.0175 mm)

        2. Accept part for select fit only

        3. NOTE

          This part can be used only if the mating part has a diameter that will result in a fit of reference No. 2227. Refer to TASK 72-40-00-430-003 (ASSEMBLY-003).

          Write down the dimension of the diameter.

      1. Examine the bearing average outer diameter at location 2264.

        1. If the average diameter is between 7.555 and 7.556in. (191.897 and 191.922 mm)

        2. Accept

        3. Write down the dimension of the average diameter

          NOTE

          The outer race has an eliptical outside diameter.
          Average diameter is found by an average of the maximum outside diameter and the minimum outside diameter.
          The maximum outside diameter is within plus or minus 2 degrees of the "X" marked on the outer race side faces.
          The difference between the maximum outside diameter and the minimum outside diameter of the outer race is to be 0.015 to 0.017in (0.381 to 0.432 mm) when the inner diameter of the outer race is held round within 0.0005in (0.013 mm).
        1. If the average diameter is between 7.555 and 7.557in. (191.897 and 191.947 mm)

        2. Accept part for select fit only

        3. NOTE

          This part can be used only if the mating part has a diameter that will result in a fit of reference No. 2264. Refer to TASK 72-40-00-430-003 (ASSEMBLY-003).

          Write down the dimension of the average diameter.

    1. SUBTASK 72-43-13-220-054 Examine the No. 4 Bearing (01-010) for the Internal Radial Clearance

      1. Examine the bearing for the internal radial clearance by the procedure given in the SPM TASK 70-29-01-290-501. Use a 44lb (19.98 kg) radial load.

        1. If the clearance is between 0.0062 and 0.0072in. (0.158 and 0.182 mm)

        2. Accept

    1. SUBTASK 72-43-13-220-055 Examine the No. 4 Bearing (01-010) for the Hardness of the Inner and Outer Races

      NOTE

      Only do the hardness check if the bearing shows signs of high temperature discoloration.

      1. Examine the bearing for hardness at locations 1, 3 and 4. Use a Rockwell hardness tester, or equivalent. Do the test on a non-functional surface.

        1. If the hardness is between 60 and 62 HRC average, or equivalent or 59 and 63 HRC absolute, or equivalent
