Common Information
TASK 72-41-30-440-001-C00 HPC Front Case And Vane Assembly - Install The HPC Stage 4 And 5 Rotor Path Rings And Stage 6 Rotor Ring Segments, Assembly-001
General
For all parts identified in a different Chapter/Section/Subject, the applicable Chapter/Section/Subject comes before the Fig/item number.
For standard torque data and procedures, refer to the SPM TASK 70-41-01-400-501 and SPM TASK 70-41-02-400-501.
Special torque data and assembly tolerances are included in the procedure.
Lubricate all threads and touch faces of nuts and bolts with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS unless other lubricants are referred to in the procedure.
To identify, lubricate and install seal rings, refer to the SPM TASK 70-44-01-400-501.
After assembly apply CoMat 07-038 AIR DRYING ENAMEL to any damaged surface protection, joint flanges and parts used to attach. Use the correct colour of the air drying enamel. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-63-02-380-501.
The number for each radial location must be identified in a clockwise direction. These start at the engine top position when you look from the rear of the engine, unless stated differently in the procedure.
Refer to Figure for a sectional view of the HP compressor front case.
The Fits and Clearances, NEW PARTS DIMENSIONS and REJECT IF MORE THAN columns will be used by most operators. This permits the full use of the maximum wear allowance and a reduction in the number of parts which are rejected, is possible.
As long as REJECT IF MORE THAN columns do not include reject values, NEW PART DIMENSIONS do not have to be measured before assembly, as there are no reject-if criteria. Values are only valid for new parts, not for worn parts.
The column WORN PART DIMENSION (Non-select) is included for operators who want to have full interchangeability. If this column is used an increase in the number of parts which are rejected is possible.
After the part has been in service for some time the REJECT IF MORE THAN and WORN PART DIMENSIONS could be changed. The operator must tell IAE and if agreed the manual will be changed.
The abbreviation Intf shows an interference or tight fit. This causes REJECT IF MORE THAN to become REJECT IF LESS THAN.
The abbreviation clear shows a clearance fit.
This TASK gives the procedure to install the HP Compressor Stage 4 And 5 Rotor Path Rings and Stage 6 Rotor Ring Segments. The subsequent TASKs give the procedure to assemble the HP Compressor front cases.
Measure and then machine the Stage 6 Stator Vanes and the Stage 4 to 6 Rotor Path Rings TASK 72-41-30-440-002-B02 (ASSEMBLY-002).
Install the VIGV TASK 72-41-30-440-003-B00 (ASSEMBLY-003).
Install the Stage 3 VSV TASK 72-41-30-440-004-B00 (ASSEMBLY-004).
Install the Stage 4 VSV TASK 72-41-30-440-005-B00 (ASSEMBLY-005).
Install the Stage 5 VSV TASK 72-41-30-440-006-B00 (ASSEMBLY-006).
Install the Stage 6 Stator Vanes TASK 72-41-30-440-007-B00 (ASSEMBLY-007).
Install the VIGV and the Stage 3 to 5 Bridge Pieces TASK 72-41-30-440-008-B00 (ASSEMBLY-008).
Measure the HP Compressor Front Cases TASK 72-41-30-440-009-B00 (ASSEMBLY-009).

The segments must be installed, into the HP Compressor front case, from the flange opposite to the anti-rotation pin.
SBE 72-0345: Introduction of revised Stage 4 and 5 Rotor path seal ring segments.
Examine the identification marks engraved on the two stage 4 rotor path ring segments. If one of the segments is marked with the symbol 'A' in triangle, the marked segment must be installed so that the stop face is not in contact with the anti-rotation pin. If the pair of the ring segments are engraved with the symbol 'A', one must be rejected.
Pre SBE 72-0345: Install one segment of the stage 4 rotor path ring into the upper half HP Compressor front case. Move the segment until the slot in the segment is against the anti-rotation pin.
SBE 72-0345: Install one segment of the Stage 4 Rotor path ring into the upper half HP Compressor front case. Move the segment until the slot in the segment is against the anti-rotation pin.
Install a sealing strip HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-678) into the slot in the segment at the center of the upper half HP Compressor front case.
Pre SBE 72-0345: Install a second segment of the Stage 4 Rotor path ring into the upper half HP Compressor front case. Engage the sealing strip in the slot in the segment. Make sure the two segments are in line with or below the split line flanges.

Apply a thin layer of CoMat 04-005 JOINTING COMPOUND, MEDIUM GRADE on to the face of the bracket HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-115) that will touch the blank. Locate the bracket on the blank.
Install the two bolts HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-122) which attach the bracket and the blank to the upper half HP Compressor front case. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).
Install a support tool blank HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-120) in to the upper half HP compressor front case.
Locate the bracket HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-118) on the blank at the 120 degree position.
Install the four bolts HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-122) to attach the bracket and the blanks to the lower half HP Compressor front case. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).
Install the two support tool blanks in to the lower half HP Compressor front case.
Install the four bolts HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-352) to attach the blanking plates to the upper half and lower half HP Compressor front case. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).
Install the two blanking plates HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-350) into the HP Compressor front case.
SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-129 Install the Support Tool Blanks and the Blanking Plates

SBE 72-345: Install a second segment of the Stage 5 Rotor Path ring into the upper half HP Compressor front case. Engage the sealing strip in the slot in the segment. Make sure the two segments are in line with, or below the split line flanges.
Install the segments of the Stage 5 Rotor Path ring HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-695) into the upper half HP Compressor front case.
SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-131 Install the HP Compressor Stage 5 Rotor Path Ring (Pre SBE 72-0345 and SBE 72-0345)
NOTE
Use screw C (2 off) to install IAE 1R19683 Drift front liner (1 off) on to IAE 1R18694 Drift handle (1 off). Tighten the two screws.
Set the tools to install the stage 6 front and rear liners.
Use the IAE 1R19684 Drift rear liner and the IAE 1R19694 Assembly tool to install the stage 6 front liners. Make sure that the liner touches the Stage 6 Rotor ring segment at face A.
Install the new HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-710) stage 6 front liners (4 off) into the slot in the Stage 6 Rotor ring segments HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-705).
Install the new HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-715) stage 6 rear liners (4 off) into the slot in the stage 6 rotor ring segments HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-705).
SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-213 Install the Liners in the Stage 6 Rotor Ring Segments
The HP Compressor Stage 6 Rotor ring segments that are installed must be a related set.
The segments must be installed in to the front HP Compressor case, from the flange opposite to the anti-rotation stop.
Install one segment of the Stage 6 Rotor ring in to the upper half HP Compressor front case. Move the segment until the slot in the segment is against the anti-rotation stop HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-720).
Install a sealing strip HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-680) in to the slot in the segment at the center of the upper half HP Compressor front case.
Install one stage 6 stop vane HPC Stator Vanes (72-41-22, 01-350) into the rotor ring segment at the center position so that the stop on the stop vane touches the segment. The stop vanes have been identified with their position numbers. You must install the correct stop vane. Refer to Figure.
Install a second segment of the stage 6 rotor ring in to the upper half HP Compressor front case. Engage the sealing strip in the slot in the segment. Engage the stop vane installed in Step in the liners in the segment. Make sure the two segments are in line with or below the split line flanges.
Install the segments of the stage 6 rotor ring HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-705) in to the upper half HP Compressor front case.
SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-133 Install the HP Compressor Stage 6 Rotor Ring Segments

Put the stage 3 stator borescope blank HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-100) into position in the lower half HP compressor front case.
Apply CoMat 10-072 ANTISEIZE COMPOUND (MoDISULFIDE) or CoMat 10-070 ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND to the two bolts HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-102) which hold the stage 3 borescope blank to the lower half of the HP compressor front case.
Install the two bolts HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-102) which attach the stage 3 stator borescope blank to the lower half HP compressor front case. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).
Put the stage 3 rotor borescope blank HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-105) into position in the lower half HP compressor front case.
Apply CoMat 10-072 ANTISEIZE COMPOUND (MoDISULFIDE) or CoMat 10-070 ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND to the two bolts HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-107) which attach the stage 3 borescope blank to the lower half of the HP compressor front case.
Install the two bolts HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-107) which attach the stage 3 rotor borescope blank to the lower half HP compressor front case. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).
SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-128 Install the Stage 3 Borescope Blanks

Put the stage 6 borescope blank HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-140) into position in the lower half HP compressor front case.
Pre SBE 72-0265, SBE 72-0317 and SBE 72-0337: Apply CoMat 10-072 ANTISEIZE COMPOUND (MoDISULFIDE) or CoMat 10-070 ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND to the two screws HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-142) which attach the stage 6 borescope blank to the lower half of the HP compressor front case.
SBE 72-0265: Apply CoMat 10-072 ANTISEIZE COMPOUND (MoDISULFIDE) or CoMat 10-070 ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND to the screw HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-142) which attach the stage 6 borescope blank to the lower half of the HP compressor front case.
SBE 72-0265: Install the screw HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-142) which attach the stage 6 borescope blank to the lower half HP compressor front case. Torque the screws to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).
SBE 72-0317 and SBE 72-0337: Install the two screws HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-142) which attach the stage 6 borescope blank to the lower half HP compressor front case. Torque the screws to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).
