Common Information

TASK 72-41-30-440-008-B00 HPC Front Case And Vane Assembly - Install The Variable Inlet Guide Vane And The Stage 3 To 5 Connectors, Assembly-008

General

For all parts identified in a different Chapter/Section/Subject, the applicable Chapter/Section/Subject comes before the Fig/item number.

For standard torque data and procedures, refer to SPM TASK 70-41-01-400-501 and SPM TASK 70-41-00-400-501.

Special torque data and assembly tolerances are included in the procedure.

Lubricate all threads and touch faces of nuts and bolts with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS, unless other lubricants are referred to in the procedure.

To identify, lubricate and install seal rings, refer to SPM TASK 70-64-02-640-501.

For lockwire data and procedures refer to SPM TASK 70-42-05-400-501.

After assembly apply CoMat 07-038 AIR DRYING ENAMEL to any damaged surface protection, joint flanges and parts used to attach. Use the correct colour of the air drying enamel. Refer to SPM TASK 70-63-02-380-501.

The number for each raDiameterl location must be identified in a clockwise direction. These start at the engine top position when you look from the rear of the engine, unless stated differently in the procedure.

Refer to Figure for a sectional view of the HP compressor front case.

The Fits and Clearances, NEW PART DIMENSIONS and REJECT IF MORE THAN columns will be used by most operators. This permits the full use of the maximum wear allowance and a reduction in the number of parts which are rejected, is possible.

As long as REJECT IF MORE THAN columns do not include reject values, NEW PART DIMENSIONS do not have to be measured before assembly, as there are no reject-if criteria. Values are only valid for new parts, not for worn parts.

The column WORN PART DIMENSIONS (Non-Select) is included for operators who want to have full interchangeability. If this column is used an increase in the number of parts which are rejected is possible.

After the part has been in service for some time the REJECT IF MORE THAN and WORN PART DIMENSIONS could be changed. The operator must tell IAE and if agreed the manual will be changed.

The abbreviation shows an interference or tight fit. This causes REJECT IF MORE THAN to become REJECT IF LESS THAN.

The abbreviation clear shows a clearance fit.

This TASK gives the procedure to install the variable inlet guide vane and stage 3 to 5 connectors. The subsequent TASK gives the procedure to assemble the HP compressor front cases.

Install the HP Compressor Stage 4 and 5 Rotor Path Rings and Stage 6 Rotor Ring Segments by TASK 72-41-30-440-001-C00 (ASSEMBLY-001).

Measure and then Machine the Stage 6 Stator Vanes and the Stage 4, 5 and 6 Rotor Path Rings by TASK 72-41-30-440-002-B00 (ASSEMBLY-002).

Install the Variable Inlet Guide Vanes by TASK 72-41-30-440-003-B00 (ASSEMBLY-003).

Install the Stage 3 Stator Vanes by TASK 72-41-30-440-004-B00 (ASSEMBLY-004).

Install the Stage 4 Stator Vanes by TASK 72-41-30-440-005-B00 (ASSEMBLY-005).

Install the Stage 5 Stator Vanes by TASK 72-41-30-440-006-B00 (ASSEMBLY-006).

Install the Stage 6 Stator Vanes by TASK 72-41-30-440-007-B00 (ASSEMBLY-007).

Measure the HP Compressor Front Cases by TASK 72-41-30-440-009-B00 (ASSEMBLY-009).

Disassemble the HP Compressor Front Cases by TASK 72-41-30-440-010-B00 (ASSEMBLY-010).

Check and Set VSV System with Optimised Build and Setting Clearances - SBE 72-0400 by TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-159 Install the Front Cases Split Line Nuts, Bolts and Spacers

      1. Install the IAE 1R19284 Lifting fixture 2 off on to the HP compressor upper and lower half front cases rear flanges.

      2. Use a suitable hoist and lift a lifter in to position on each HP compressor half front case rear flange.

      3. Engage the two location pins on the lifter in the boltholes in the split line flanges.

      4. Adjust the six pins and engage them in six boltholes in the rear flange of each HP compressor half front case.

    3. Use a suitable hoist and lift the two HP compressor half front cases on to the inspection table. Carefully lower the HP compressor half front cases on to the inspection table.

    4. Remove the two lifters from the HP compressor half front cases rear flanges.

    5. Install the two stage 4 sealing strips HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-678) in to the slots in the stage 4 rotor path ring at the split line flanges.

    6. Install the two stage 5 sealing strips HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-679) in to the slots in the stage 5 rotor path ring at the split line flanges.

    7. Install the two stage 6 sealing strips HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-680) in to the slots in the stage 6 rotor path ring at the split line flanges.

    8. Align the front HP compressor split line flanges. As the split line flanges are aligned engage the sealing strips in their opposite rotor path ring segments.

    9. CAUTION

      YOU MUST NOT LET THE BOLTS TURN WHEN YOU INSTALL THEM AND WHEN YOU TORQUE THE NUTS. THE BOLTS ARE A CLOSE TOLERANCE FIT.

    10. Pre SBE 74-0001: Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-112) and nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-101) at the split line flange positions 13 and 31. Install the 30 bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-108), spacers HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-104) and nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-102) at the remaining split line flange positions.

      SBE 74-0001: Install the four bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-112) and nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-101) at the split line flange positions 28, 24, 30 and 32. Install the 28 bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-108), spacers HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-104) and nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-102) at the remaining split line flange positions.

    11. Torque the nuts to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20.00 Nm to 25.00 Nm).

      1. Install IAE 1R18205 Lifting tool 1 off on the HP compressor front case rear flange.

      2. Release the six adjusting screws then remove the six bolts, washers and the two clamps from the lifting tool.

      3. Use a suitable hoist and lift the lifting tool on to the HP compressor front case rear flange.

      4. Install the two clamps at their correct positions on the lifting tool and the HP compressor front case rear flange.

      5. Install the six bolts and washers to attach the two clamps to the lifting tool. Do not tighten the six bolts.

      6. Adjust the six adjusting screws until the two clamps touch the HP compressor front case rear flange front face.

      7. Tighten the six bolts installed in Step.

    12. Use a suitable hoist attached to the lifting eye on the lifting tool and lift the HP compressor front case from the inspection table.

    13. Lower the HP compressor front case on to IAE 1R18207 Support stand 1 off.

      1. Remove the lifting tool from the HP compressor front case rear flange.

      2. Release the six adjusting screws.

      3. Remove the six bolts and washers which attach the two clamps to the lifting tool.

      4. Remove the two clamps.

      5. Use a suitable hoist and remove the lifting tool from the HP compressor front case rear flange.

      6. Attach the two clamps to the lifting tool with the six bolts and washers.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-160 Install the Connector Housings and the Variable Inlet Guide Vane Connector Assemblies (Pre SBE 72-0400, SBE 72-0400, Pre SBE 72-0385or SBE 72-0416, SBE 72-0385or SBE 72-0416, Pre SBE 72-0486 and SBE 72-0486)

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Pre SBE 72-0486: Remove the variable inlet guide vane actuating levers.

      2. Remove the eight nuts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-123) from the eight inlet guide vanes at the positions 1, 2, 19 to 22, 39 and 40.

      3. Remove the eight actuating levers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-120) from the eight inlet guide vanes. Identify each actuating lever with its position number.

      4. Install the eight nuts, removed in Step, to keep the installed spacers on the inlet guide vane spindles.

      1. SBE 72-0486: Remove the variable inlet guide vane actuating levers.

      2. Remove the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-122) from the eight inlet guide vanes at the positions 1, 2, 19 to 22, 39 and 40.

      3. Remove the eight actuating levers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-120) from the eight inlet guide vanes. Identify each actuating lever with its position number.

      4. Install the eight bolts, removed in Step, to keep the installed spacers on the inlet guide vane spindles.

      1. Install the left hand connector housing HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-730) in to the left hand connector HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-200).

      2. Put the left hand connector housing in to position in the left hand connector.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-732) and HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-733) to attach the left hand connector housing to the left hand connector.

      4. Tighten the bolts.

      1. Install the right hand connector housing HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-750) in to the left hand connector.

      2. Put the right hand connector housing in to position in the left hand connector.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-732) and HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-733) to attach the right hand connector housing to the left hand connector.

      4. Tighten the bolts.

      1. Pre SBE 72-0400: Install the left hand connectors on to the VIGV upper and lower actuating rings HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-440) and HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-540).

      2. Put the left hand connector in to position on the upper and lower actuating rings. Install one of IAE 1R18423 Rigging pin 2 off or IAE 1R18892 Rigging pin 2 off to hold the connector to the upper actuating ring.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the three hollow dowels HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-206) and the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      4. SBE 72-0385: Install the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      5. SBE 72-0416: Install the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202) and the washer HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-205) which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      6. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the hollow dowel HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-208) and the bolt HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the lower actuating ring. Torque the bolt to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      7. SBE 72-0385: Install the bolt HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the lower actuating ring. Torque the bolt to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      8. SBE 72-0416: Install the bolt HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203) and the washer HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-207) which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the lower actuating ring. Torque the bolt to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      1. Install the left and right hand connector housings in to the right hand connector.

      2. Install the left and right hand connector housings in to the right hand connector as given in Step to Step.

      1. Install the right hand connector on to the upper and lower actuating rings.

      2. Install the right hand connector on to the upper and lower actuating rings as given in Step to Step.

    3. Remove the two rigging pins from the left and right hand connectors.

      1. SBE 72-0400: Install the left and right hand connectors and connector housings to the upper and lower actuating rings, follow the procedure in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011) and this SUBTASK.

      2. Install the left hand connectors on to the VIGV upper and lower actuating rings HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-440) and HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-540).

      3. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the three hollow dowels HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-206) and the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      4. SBE 72-0385: Install the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      5. SBE 72-0416: Install the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202) and the washer HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-205) which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      6. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the hollow dowel HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-208) and the bolt HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the lower actuating ring. Torque the bolt to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      7. SBE 72-0385: Install the bolt HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the lower actuating ring. Torque the bolt to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      8. SBE 72-0416: Install the bolt HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203) and the washer HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-207) which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the lower actuating ring. Torque the bolt to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      1. Install the left and right hand connector housings in to the right hand connector.

      2. Install the left and right hand connector housings in to the right hand connector as given in Step to Step but do not tighten the bolts.

      3. Install the right hand connector on to the upper and lower actuating rings as given in Step to Step.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-161 Install the Variable Inlet Guide Vane Actuating Levers at the Connectors (Pre SBE 72-0486 and SBE 72-0486)

    2. SBE 72-0486: HP compressor variable vanes - Introduction of a revised VIGV with an optimised spindle

    3. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install the spacers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-060 to 02-078) on to the variable inlet guide vanes at the positions 1, 2, 19 to 22, 39 and 40.

      2. Pre SBE 72-0486: Remove the eight slave nuts from the eight guide vanes.

      3. SBE 72-0486: Remove the eight slave bolts from the eight guide vanes.

      4. Remove the two installed spacers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-060) from the spindles of the eight guide vanes. Measure and write down the total thickness of the two spacers.

      5. Install the two spacers on to the spindles of the eight guide vanes. The thickness of the spacers that are to be installed is equal to:

        The total thickness of the two spacers removed in Step plus the end float minus 0.003 in. to 0.005 in. (0.08 mm to 0.13 mm).

        Refer to TASK 72-41-30-440-003 where the end float was measured and written down.

      1. CAUTION

        MAKE SURE THE CORRECT VARIABLE INLET GUIDE VANE ACTUATING LEVER IS INSTALLED ON THE CORRECT VARIABLE INLET GUIDE VANE.

        Install the eight variable inlet guide vane actuating levers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-120).

      2. Install the eight guide vane actuating levers in to their locations in the left and right hand connectors. Engage the actuating levers on the correct guide vane spindles.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0486: Install the eight nuts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-123) removed in Step. Tighten the eight nuts.

      4. SBE 72-0486: Install the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-122) removed in Step. Tighten the eight bolts.

      5. Set the guide vane actuating levers to the null position. The actuating levers are parallel with the HP compressor front case center line.

      6. Pre SBE 72-0486: Torque the eight nuts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      7. SBE 72-0486: Torque the eight bolts to 100 lbfin (11.50 Nm), plus the run down torque.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-162-A00 Install the VIGV Centralizing Pad and the Connector Housing Adjusting Washers (Pre SBE 72-0400)

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install the centralizing pad adjusting washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-654) thru HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-670).

      2. Install IAE 1R18423 Rigging pin 4 off or IAE 1R18892 Rigging pin 4 off to set the VIGVs in the correct position.

      3. Loosen the two bolts which attach a centralizing pad HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-680) to the actuating ring.

      4. Push the centralizing pad raDiameterlly in until the centralizing pad touches the HP compressor front case.

      5. Measure and write down the gap between the centralizing pad and the actuating ring.

        NOTE

        A maximum of two adjusting washers can be installed.
      6. Remove each bolt and washer and install the adjusting washers equal to the gap minus 0.003 in. to 0.004 in. (0.076 mm to 0.102 mm).

      7. Install the two bolts and washers to attach the centralizing pad and adjusting washers to the actuating ring.

      8. Torque the bolts to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4.00 Nm to 5.00 Nm).

      9. Measure and write down the gap between the centralizing pad and the HP compressor front case. This must be 0.003 in. to 0.004 in. (0.076 mm to 0.102 mm).

      10. Install the adjusting washers at the remaining three centralizing pads as given in Step to Step.

      1. Install the connector housing adjusting washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-704) thru HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-720).

      2. Loosen the two bolts which attach a connector housing HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-730) and HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-750) to the connector.

      3. Push the connector housing raDiameterlly in until the connector housing touches the HP compressor front case.

      4. Measure and write down the gap between the connector housing and the connector.

        NOTE

        A maximum of two adjusting washers can be installed.
      5. Remove the two bolts and install the adjusting washers equal to the gap minus 0.003 in. to 0.004 in. (0.076 mm to 0.102 mm).

      6. Install the two bolts to attach the connector housing and adjusting washers to the connector.

      7. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      8. Measure and write down the gap between the connector housing and the HP compressor front case. This must be 0.003 in. to 0.004 in. (0.076 mm to 0.102 mm).

      9. Install the adjusting washers at the remaining three connector housings as given in Step to Step.

    3. Remove the four rigging pins.

      2. Install the centralizing pad adjusting washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-654 to HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System 02-670).

      3. Install the connector housing adjusting washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-704 to 02-720).

      1. Torque tighten the bolts.

      2. Torque the six bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202), which attach the left and right hand VIGV connectors to the upper and lower actuating ring to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10 Nm to 12 Nm).

      3. Torque the two bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203), which attach the left and right hand VIGV connectors to the upper and lower actuating ring to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      4. Torque the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-682) which attach the centralizing pads to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4 Nm to 5 Nm).

      5. Torque the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-732 and 02-733), and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-752 and 02-753) which attach the left and right hand VIGV connector housings to LH and RH connectors to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10 Nm to 12 Nm).

    5. Check the pad clearances, follow the procedure in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011).

    6. Remove all the rigging pins and the feeler gauges.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-163 Install the Stage 3 Actuating Levers at the Connectors

      1. Install the spacers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 03-060 to HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System03-076) on to the stage 3 stator vanes at the positions 1, 2, 15 to 18, 31 and 32.

      2. Remove the eight slave nuts from the eight stage 3 stator vanes.

      3. Remove the eight connector actuating levers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 03-120) from the eight stage 3 stator vanes. Identify each actuating lever with its position number.

      4. Remove the two installed spacers from the spindles of the eight stage 3 stator vanes. Measure and write down the total thickness of the two spacers.

      5. Install two spacers on to the spindle of the eight stage 3 stator vanes. The thickness of the spacers that are to be installed is equal to:

        The total thickness of the two spacers removed in Step plus the end float minus 0.003 in. to 0.005 in. (0.08 mm to 0.13 mm).

        The end float was measured and written down in TASK 72-41-34-440-004.

      1. CAUTION

        MAKE SURE THE CORRECT STAGE 3 ACTUATING LEVER IS INSTALLED ON THE CORRECT STAGE 3 STATOR VANE.

        Install the eight stage 3 actuating levers at the connectors.

      2. Install the actuating levers on to the spindles of the stage 3 stator vanes.

      3. Install the eight nuts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 03-123). Tighten the eight nuts.

      6. SBE 72-0416: Install the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 03-282) and the four washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 03-285) which attach the RH stage 3 connector to the stage 3 stator vane upper and lower actuating rings.

      2. Put the RH stage 3 connector and connector housings in to position on the stage 3 stator vane upper and lower actuating rings.

      7. Install the two bolts to attach the centralizing pad and adjusting washers to the actuating ring.

      8. Torque the bolts to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4.00 Nm to 5.00 Nm).

      9. Measure and write down the gap between the centralizing pad and the HP compressor front case. This must be 0.002 in. to 0.003 in. (0.051 mm to 0.076 mm).

      10. Install the adjusting washers at the remaining three centralizing pads as given in Step to Step.

      4. Torque the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 03-682) which attach the centralizing pads to the upper and lower actuating rings to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4 Nm to 5 Nm).

      5. Torque the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 03-732) which attach the stage 3 connector housings to the LH and RH connectors to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10 Nm to 12 Nm).

    8. Check the pad clearances, follow the procedure in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011).

Pre SBE 72-0348: Install the four hollow dowels HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-206) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-202), which attach the left hand stage 4 connector and connector housings to the stage 4 upper and lower actuating rings.

      4. SBE 72-0348: Install the four washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-202), which attach the left hand stage 4 connector and connector housings to the stage 4 upper and lower actuating rings.

      5. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the four washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-202), which attach the left hand stage 4 connector and connector housings to the stage 4 upper and lower actuating rings.

      6. SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the two washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-202), which attach the left hand stage 4 connector and connector housings to the stage 4 upper and lower actuating rings.

      7. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      1. Install the right hand stage 4 connector and connector housings on to the stage 4 upper and lower actuating rings.

      2. Install the right hand stage 4 connector and connector housings on to the stage 4 upper and lower actuating rings as given in Step to Step.

      1. Torque the actuating lever nuts.

      2. Set the stage 4 stator vanes to the null position. The actuating levers are parallel to the HP compressor front case center line.

      3. Torque the eight nuts installed in Step to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-168-A00 Install the Stage 4 Centralizing Pads and Connector Housing Adjusting Washers (Pre SBE 72-0400, Pre SBE 72-0319 and SBE 72-0319)

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install the centralizing pad adjusting washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-654) thru HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-666).

      2. Install IAE 1R18423 Rigging pin 6 off or IAE 1R18894 Rigging pin 6 off to set the stage 4 stator vanes in the correct position.

      3. Loosen the two bolts which attach a centralizing pad HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-680) to the actuating ring.

      4. Push the centralizing pad raDiameterlly in until the centralizing pad touches the HP compressor front case.

      5. Measure and write down the gap between the centralizing pad and the actuating ring.

        NOTE

        A maximum of two adjusting washers can be installed. On SBE 72-0319 pads a maximum of 3 washers can be installed.
      6. Remove the two bolts and install the adjusting washers equal to the gap minus 0.003 in. to 0.004 in. (0.076 mm to 0.102 mm).

      7. Install the two bolts to attach the centralizing pad and adjusting washers to the actuating ring.

      8. Torque the bolts to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4.00 Nm to 5.00 Nm).

      9. Measure and write down the gap between the centralizing pad and the HP compressor front case. This must be 0.003 in. to 0.004 in. (0.076 mm to 0.102 mm).

      10. Install the adjusting washers at the remaining three centralizing pads as given in Step to Step.

      1. Install the connector housing adjusting washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-704) thru HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-720).

      2. Loosen the two bolts which attach a connector housing HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-730) to the connector.

      3. Push the connector housing raDiameterlly in until the connector housing touches the HP compressor front case.

      4. Measure and write down the gap between the connector housing and the connector.

        NOTE

        A maximum of two adjusting washer can be installed.
      5. Remove the two bolts and install a adjusting washer equal to the gap minus 0.005 in. to 0.006 in. (0.127 mm to 0.152 mm).

      6. Install the two bolts to attach the connector housing and adjusting washers to the connector.

      7. Torque the bolts to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4.00 Nm to 5.00 Nm).

      8. Measure and write down the gap between the connector housing and the HP compressor front case. This must be 0.005 in. to 0.006 in. (0.127 mm to 0.152 mm).

      9. Install the adjusting washers at the remaining three connector housings as given in Step to Step.

    3. Remove the six rigging pins.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-168-B00 Install the Stage 4 Centralizing Pads and Connector Housing Adjusting Washers (SBE 72-0400, Pre SBE 72-0319 and SBE 72-0319)

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. SBE 72-0400: HP compressor variable vanes - inlet guide vane and stages 3 to 5 with optimised build and setting instructions.

      SBE 72-0319: Centralising pads with revised method of manufacture.

    4. Set the pad clearances, follow the procedure in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011).

      1. Install the stage 4 centralizing pad and connector housing adjusting washers, follow the procedure in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011) and this SUBTASK.

        NOTE

        A maximum of two adjusting washers can be installed. On SBE 72-0319 pads a maximum of 3 washers can be installed.
      2. Install the centralizing pad adjusting washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-654 to 04-666).

      3. Install the connector housing adjusting washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-704 to HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System 04-720).

      1. Torque tighten the bolts.

      2. Torque the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-202), which attach the left and right hand stage 4 connectors to the upper and lower actuating ring to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10 Nm to 12 Nm).

      3. Torque the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-682) which attach the centralizing pads to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4 Nm to 5 Nm).

      4. Torque the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 04-732) which attach the left and right hand stage 4 connector housings to LH and RH connectors to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4 Nm to 5 Nm).

    5. Check the pad clearances, follow the procedure in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011).

    6. Remove the feeler gauges and the six rigging pins.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-169 Install the Stage 5 Actuating Levers at the Connectors

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install the spacers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-060 to 05-078) on to the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 1 to 3, 30 to 35 and 62 to 64.

      2. Remove the 12 slave nuts from the 12 stage 5 stator vanes.

      3. Remove the 12 connector actuating levers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-120 and HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System 05-140) from the 12 stage 5 stator vanes. Identify each actuating lever with its position number.

      4. Remove the two installed spacers from the spindles of the 12 stage 5 stator vanes. Measure and write down the total thickness of the two spacers.

      5. Install two spacers on to the spindle of the 12 stage 5 stator vanes. The thickness of the spacers that are to be installed is equal to:

        The total thickness of the two spacers removed in Step plus the end float minus 0.003 in. to 0.005 in. (0.08 mm to 0.13 mm).

        The end float was measured and written down in TASK 72-41-30-440-006.

      1. CAUTION

        MAKE SURE THE CORRECT STAGE 5 ACTUATING LEVER IS INSTALLED ON THE CORRECT STAGE 5 STATOR VANE.

        Install the 12 stage 5 connector actuating levers.

      2. Install the four stage 5 stator vane actuating levers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-140) on to the stator vanes at the positions 1, 32, 33 and 64. Make sure the correct actuating levers are installed on the correct stator vane.

      3. Install the eight stage 5 actuating levers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-120) on to the stator vanes at the positions 2, 3, 30, 31, 34, 35, 62 and 63. Make sure the correct actuating levers are installed on the correct stator vane.

      4. Install the 12 nuts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-123 and HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System 05-143). Tighten the 12 nuts.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-170 Install the Connector Housings and the Stage 5 Connectors (Pre SBE 72-0400, SBE 72-0400, Pre SBE 72-0348, Pre SBE 72-0385or SBE 72-0416, SBE 72-0348 and SBE 72-0385or SBE 72-0416)

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. SBE 72-0400: HP compressor variable vanes - inlet guide vane and stages 3 to 5 with optimised build and setting instructions.

      1. Install the two connector housings HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-730) in to the left hand stage 5 connector HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-200).

      2. Put the two connector housings in to position in the left hand stage 5 connector.

      3. Install the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-732) and the four washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-733) to attach the two connector housings to the left hand stage 5 connector.

      4. Tighten the bolts.

      1. Install the two connector housings in to the right hand stage 5 connector.

      2. Install the two connector housings in to the right hand stage 5 connector as given in Step to Step.

      1. Pre SBE 72-0400 : Install the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings in to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating rings HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-440 and 05-540).

      2. Put the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings in to position on the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring. Engage the actuating lever pins in the correct locations in the connector.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0348: Install the four hollow dowels HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-206) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      4. SBE 72-0348: Install the four washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      5. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the four washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      6. SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the two washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      7. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      1. Install the right hand stage 5 connector and connector housings in to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating rings.

      2. Install the right hand stage 5 connector and connector housings in to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating rings as given in Step to Step.

      1. Torque the actuating lever nuts.

      2. Set the stage 5 stator vanes to the null position. The actuating levers are parallel to the HP compressor front case center line.

      3. Torque the 12 nuts installed in Step to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      1. SBE 72-0400 : Install the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings in to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating rings HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-440 and HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System05-540). Follow the procedure in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011) and this SUBTASK.

      2. Put the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings in to position on the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring. Engage the actuating lever pins in the correct locations in the connector.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the four washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      6. SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the two washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the left hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      7. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      1. Install the right hand stage 5 connector and connector housings in to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating rings.

      2. Install the right hand stage 5 connector and connector housings in to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating rings as given in Step and Step.

      1. Torque the actuating lever nuts.

      2. Set the stage 5 stator vanes to the null position. The actuating levers are parallel to the HP compressor front case center line.

      3. Torque the 12 nuts installed in Step to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      2. Loosen the two bolts which attach a compensating pad HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-730) to the connector.

      3. Push the compensating pad raDiameterlly in until the compensating pad touches the HP compressor front case.

      4. Measure and write down the gap between the compensating pad and the connector.

        NOTE

        A maximum of two adjusting washers can be installed.
      5. Remove the two bolts and install the adjusting washers equal to the gap minus 0.006 in. to 0.007 in. (0.152 mm to 0.178 mm).

      6. Install the two bolts to attach the compensating pad and adjusting washers to the connector.

      7. Torque the bolts to 36 to 45 lbfin (4.00 Nm to 5.00 Nm).

      8. Measure and write down the gap between the compensating pad and the HP compressor front case. This must be 0.006 in. to 0.007 in. (0.152 mm to 0.178 mm).

      9. Install the adjusting washers at the remaining three connector housings as given in Step to Step.

    3. Remove the six rigging pins.

      4. Torque the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-682) which attach the centralizing pads to the upper and lower actuating rings to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4 Nm to 5 Nm).

      5. Torque the eight bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-732) which attach the stage 5 connector housings to the LH and RH connectors to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4 Nm to 5 Nm).

    6. Check the pad clearances, follow the procedure in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011).

    7. Remove the feeler gauges and the six rigging pins.
