This repair must only be done when the instruction to do is given in 72-41-23, Inspection/Check.

This TASK gives the procedure to repair cracks on the HP compressor rear outer case by blending or weld.

Make sure that all the necessary cleaning and inspection procedures are done before this repair.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-320-001 Blend the Repair Area/Areas

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Blend the repair area/areas at the affected cooling ports (17, 18, 19, and 20) to completely remove the crack indications per SPM TASK 70-35-03-300-501. Refer to Figure for post-blend dimensions.

      2. If post blend requirements for BLEND ONLY are met, continue to Step.

      3. If the requirements for BLEND ONLY are not met, and the requirements for WELD REPAIR are met, continue to Step.

      4. If the requirements for WELD REPAIR are not met, reject.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-330-003 Remove the Surface Protection

    2. Remove the surface protection. Refer to SPM TASK 70-11-05-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-350-144 Remove Insert from Bolt Hole Adjacent to the Blend Area

    2. Remove insert from bolt hole adjacent to the blend area.

    3. Refer to Repair, VRS6306 TASK 72-41-23-300-019 (REPAIR-019).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-110-107 Clean the Repair Area

    2. Clean the repair area per SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-230-252 Do a Local Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection

      1. Do a local fluorescent penetrant inspection of the blended area per SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

      2. Use medium sensitivity water washable penetrant.

      3. No indications or cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-340-058 Prepare the Repair Area/Areas

    2. Prepare the repair area/areas for weld. Refer to SPM TASK 70-31-02-310-501-001.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-110-108 Clean the Repair Area/Areas

    2. Clean the repair area/areas per SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-310-001 Weld Build Up the Repair Area/Areas

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Weld build up the repair area/areas by TIG welding.

      2. Use chills and locally manufactured fixtures to minimize distortion.

      3. Use CoMat 03-181 WELDING WIRE 12% Cr. STEEL and apply sufficient weld to allow for final blending.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-370-001 Locally Heat Treat the Repair Area/Areas

      1. Locally heat treat the repair area/areas. Refer to SPM TASK 70-31-02-310-501-004 and SPM TASK 70-37-00-370-501.

      2. Increase to a temperature of 1130 deg F (610 deg C) and hold for 60 minutes. Cool down to room temperature in air or argon environment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-320-002 Finish Blend the Welded Area

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Finish blend the welded area.

      2. Ensure the weld is finished smooth to the adjacent undamaged parent material. No mismatch is allowed.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-222 Do a Hardness Check on the Surfaces

    2. Do a hardness check on the surfaces adjacent to the welded area/areas. Hardness must be 321 - 352 HB (334 to 366 HV) or equivalent.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-110-109 Clean the Repair Area/Areas

    2. Clean the repair area/areas per SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-230-253 Do a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection

      1. Do a fluorescent penetrant inspection of the repaired area/areas per SPM TASK 70-23-05-230-501.

      2. Use medium sensitivity water washable penetrant.

      3. No indications or cracks are permitted.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-220-223 Do a Visual and Dimensional Inspection

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Do a visual and dimensional inspection of the repair area/areas.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-350-145 If Removed, Re-Install the Inserts

    2. If removed, re-install the inserts removed during Step. Refer to Repair, VRS6306 TASK 72-41-23-300-019 (REPAIR-019).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-23-350-146 Mark the Part

      1. Permanently mark the part with VRS9537 adjacent to the assembly part number. Refer to SPM TASK 70-09-00-400-501.

      2. Use the vibration peen method.
