General

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

Special torque data is identified by the * symbol after the torque value.

Refer to SPM TASK 70-64-00-640-501 before the removal of threaded parts and parts with an interference fit. Let the parts soak before removal.

Discard all rubber seal rings, cotter pins and key washers removed in this procedure.

Lubricate all threads and abutment faces of nuts and bolts with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS, unless other lubricants are referred to in the procedure.

To identify, lubricate and install seal rings, refer to the SPM TASK 70-64-02-640-501.

After assembly apply CoMat 07-038 AIR DRYING ENAMEL to any damaged surface protection, joint flanges and attach parts. Use the correct color of the air drying enamel. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-38-21-380-501.

The number for each radial location must be identified in a clockwise direction. These start at the engine top position when you look from the rear of the engine, unless stated differently in the procedure.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-059 Remove the No. 5 Bearing Compartment Cover

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Remove the 13 bolts that attach the compartment cover to the exhaust case.

    4. Remove the No. 5 bearing shields.

    5. Make sure that the three jaws of the IAE 1P17038 Slide puller 1 off are in the outward position. Make sure that the three jaws are correctly engaged behind the flange at the compartment cover.

    6. Slide the ring over jaws to hold slide puller jaws in place.

    7. Move the knocker puller rearwards quickly to hit the handle.

    8. Do Step until the compartment cover is free from the exhaust case.

    9. Remove ring from jaws. Move jaws outward until compartment cover is free from the slide puller.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-060 Remove the Blind Cap of the LP Turbine Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Remove the internal retaining ring of the blind cap.

    4. Install the IAE 1J12221 Impact hammer 1 off in to the turbine shaft. Make sure that the piston of the impact hammer is correctly aligned with the LP turbine shaft.

    5. Move the hammer more forward until the head touches the blind cap. Push against the body of the impact hammer until the jaws engage in to the groove of the blind cap.

    6. Move the hammer rearward quickly to hit the grip.

    7. Do step D again until the blind cap is free from the turbine shaft.

    8. Remove the impact hammer and the blind cap from the LP turbine shaft.

    9. Release the head of the impact hammer and remove the blind cap.

    10. CAUTION

      DO NOT DAMAGE THE SLOT SURFACE WHEN YOU REMOVE THE SEALING RING FROM THE SLOT OF THE BLIND CAP WITH HAND TOOLS. DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE CAUSES OIL TO LEAK.

      Remove the sealing ring from the blind cap and discard it.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-061 Disconnect the No. 5 Bearing Compartment Oil Feed and Scavenge Tubes

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Remove the two bolts and nuts which attach the two oil feed tube flanges. Disconnect the tubes. Remove the metallic seal.

    4. Loosen the clipping points if necessary.

    5. Remove the four bolts and the two threaded plates which attach the two oil scavenge tubes. Disconnect the tubes. Remove the metallic seal.

    6. Loosen the clipping points if necessary.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-062 Disconnect the No. 5 Bearing Pressure Tube Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Remove the two nuts and bolts which attach the bracket to the No. 5 bearing pressure tube and to the inner support of the turbine exhaust case.

    4. Remove the nut, bolt and two washers that attaches the bracket to the tube heat shield. Remove the bracket.

    5. Remove the two nuts and two bolts which attach the bracket to the external flange of the turbine exhaust case.

    6. Remove the nut and bolt which attach the bracket to the clamp and loop support. Remove the bracket.

    7. Loosen the coupling nut and remove the pressure tube.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-063 Remove the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Remove the nipple and packing from the No. 5 bearing compartment. Discard the packing.

    4. Remove the two bolts and key washers which attach the No. 5 Bearing Packing Transfer Tube to the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle.

    5. Install the IAE 1P16624 Slide Puller 1 off into No. 5 Bearing Transfer Tube.

    6. Move the knocker puller rearwards quickly and hit the handle to remove the No. 5 Bearing Packing Transfer Tube from the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle.

    7. Remove the three packings from the No. 5 Bearing Packing Transfer Tube. Discard the packings.

    8. Remove the two bolts which attach the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle.

    9. Remove the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle and packing. Discard the packing.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-064 Remove the Rear Lock Nut

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Remove the rear lock nut retaining ring.

    4. Attach the IAE 1P16374 Wrench support 1 off to the inner rear flange of the TEC.

    5. Install the IAE 1F10038 Torque wrench 1 off through the wrench support. Engage the torque wrench with the rear lock nut of the LP turbine shaft.

    6. Install the IAE 1F10039 Anti-torque adapter 1 off through the torque wrench. Lock the anti-torque adapter to the LP turbine shaft.

    7. Install the IAE 1F10016 Mechanical wrench 1 off to the torque wrench. Safety the anti-torque adapter to the mechanical wrench with the IAE 1F10040 Anchor wrench plate 1 off.

    8. Operate the mechanical wrench to release the rear lock nut.

      1. Remove the tools from the engine as follows:

      2. Remove the anchor wrench plate and the mechanical wrench.

      3. Disengage the lock mechanism of the anti-torque adapter and remove the adapter.

      4. Remove the torque wrench.

      5. Remove the wrench support.

    9. Remove the rear lock nut of the LP turbine shaft.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-065-A00 Remove the Deaerators and the Retaining Ring (Pre SBE 72-0142)

    2. Remove the eight bolts which attach the upper and lower deaerators to the No. 5 bearing compartment. Remove the deaerators.

    3. Remove the retaining ring.

    4. Measure dimension C at three equally spaced positions. Calculate the average and write it. Refer to Figure.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-065-B00 Remove the Deaerators and the Retaining Ring (SBE 72-0142)

    2. SBE 72-0142: Provide a new carbon seal for the No. 5 bearing compartment.

    3. Remove the eight bolts which attach the upper and lower deaerators to the No. 5 bearing compartment. Remove the deaerators.

    4. Remove the retaining ring.

    5. Measure dimension C at three equally spaced positions. Calculate the average and write it. Refer to Figure.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-067 Install the Guide Pogo Stick to the LP Turbine Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Install the IAE 1F10074 Guide pogo stick 1 off to the inner diameter of the LP turbine shaft. Use the applicable webbing sling.

    4. Make sure that the centering diameter of the guide pogo stick is installed correctly to the LP turbine shaft. Turn clockwise the screw at the rear end of the guide pogo stick to safety the guide pogo stick to the LP turbine shaft.

    5. Put the IAE 1F10075 Support pedestal 1 off below the guide pogo stick. Move the support pedestal A near the rear flange of the TEC. Turn the handwheel A until the pedestal screw touches the guide pogo stick. Lift the LP turbine rotor so that the bearing outer race carries no load. Safety the pedestal - screw in that position with the handwheel B.

    6. CAUTION

      DO NOT INSTALL THE FEELER GAGE SHIMS BETWEEN THE BLADE KNIFE EDGE SEALS AND THE LP TURBINE SHROUDS.

      Install the feeler gage shims between the LP turbine shrouds and the blade outer platform over the half lower diameter to fix the LP turbine rotor position.

    7. Remove the bearing outer race by hand.

    8. Check that the rotor is in the correct position. Adjust if necessary.

      1. Remove the guide pogo stick.

      2. Release the handwheel B (part of the IAE 1F10075 Support pedestal).

      3. Turn the handwheel A.

      4. Turn counterclockwise the screw at the rear end of the guide pogo stick.

      5. Remove the guide pogo stick.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-066-A00 Remove the No. 5 Bearing and the No. 5 Bearing Seal and Spacers, Refer to (Pre SBE 72-0165)

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Make sure that the rear lock nut is removed. Install the IAE 1F10035 Hydraulic Removal puller 1 off to the rear face of the LP turbine shaft. Engage the jaws of the puller with the grooves of the No. 5 bearing rear seal spacer.

    4. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the puller.

    5. Operate the hydraulic pump until the inner race and the seal spacer are free of the LP turbine shaft.

    6. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the puller.

    7. Release the jaws of the puller and remove the No. 5 bearing race and seal spacer.

    8. Remove the seal from the LP turbine shaft.

    9. Remove the seal spacer from the LP turbine shaft.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-030-066-B00 Remove the No. 5 Bearing and the No. 5 Bearing Seal and Spacers, Refer to (SBE 72-0165)

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. SBE 72-0165: Replace the No. 5 bearing seal spacer with a spacer incorporating fool-proof installation features.

    4. Make sure that the rear lock nut is removed. Install the IAE 1F10035 Hydraulic Removal puller 1 off to the rear face of the LP turbine shaft. Engage the jaws of the puller with the grooves of the No. 5 bearing rear seal spacer.

    5. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the puller.

    6. Operate the hydraulic pump until the inner race and the seal spacer are free of the LP turbine shaft.

    7. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the puller.

    8. Release the jaws of the puller and remove the No. 5 bearing inner race and seal spacer.

    9. Remove the seal from the LP turbine shaft.

    10. Remove the seal spacer from the LP turbine shaft.

    4. Install the new carbon seal to the IAE 1F10074 Guide pogo stick 1 off.

    5. Install the guide pogo stick. Refer to Step and do Step to Step.

    6. Measure dimension A and write it. Refer to Figure.

    7. Measure dimension X (of the new carbon seal) and write it.

    8. Determine dimension B (of the new carbon seal plus the bearing inner race) and write it.

    9. Calculate dimension C (dimension A - dimension B = dimension C) and write it.

    3. SBE 72-0142: Provide a new carbon seal for the No.5 bearing compartment

    4. Lubricate the new carbon seal with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

    5. Install the new carbon seal to the IAE 1F10074 Guide pogo stick 1 off.

    6. Install the guide pogo stick. Refer to Step and do Step to Step.

    7. Measure dimensions A and write it. Refer to Figure.

    8. Measure dimension X (of the new carbon seal) and write it.

    9. Determine dimension B (of the new carbon seal plus the bearing inner race) and write it.

    10. Calculate dimension C (dimension A - dimension B = dimension C) and write it.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-069-A00 Install the No. 5 Bearing Seal and Spacers on to the LP Turbine Shaft (Pre SBE 72-0165)

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. CAUTION

      MAKE SURE THE LIP OF THE NO. 5 BEARING SEAL SPACER POINTS TOWARD THE REAR.

      Install the No.5 bearing seal spacers ENGINE-NO.5 BEARING ASSEMBLY AND SEAL (72-50-42, 20-160) to the rear end of the LP turbine shaft.

    4. Lightly coat the No. 5 bearing carbon seal (20-140) with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

    5. Install the carbon seal to the rear end of the LP turbine shaft.

    6. Install the No.5 bearing seal spacer (20-120) to the rear end of the LP turbine shaft.

    7. Install the IAE 1F10033 Hydraulic installation pusher 1 off on the rear end of the LP turbine shaft. Attach the reaction adapter (part of the hydraulic installation pusher) to the rear thread of the LP turbine shaft.

    8. Tighten the knurled part (part of the hydraulic installation pusher).

    9. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the pusher.

    10. Operate the hydraulic pump to move the carbon seal in to the correct position.

      1. Remove the tools as follows:

      2. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the hydraulic installation pusher.

      3. Release the knurled nut and remove the hydraulic installation pusher.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-069-B00 Install the No. 5 Bearing Seal and Spacers on to the LP Turbine Shaft (SBE 72-0165)

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. SBE 72-0165: Replace the No. 5 bearing seal spacer with a spacer incorporating fool-proof installation features

    4. Install the No.5 bearing seal spacer ENGINE-NO.5 BEARING ASSEMBLY AND SEAL (72-50-42, 20-160) to the rear end of the LP turbine shaft.

    5. Lightly coat the No. 5 bearing carbon seal (20-140) with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

    6. Install the carbon seal to the rear end of the LP turbine shaft.

    7. Install the No. 5 bearing seal spacer (20-120) to the rear end of the LP turbine shaft.

    8. Install the IAE 1F10033 Hydraulic installation pusher 1 off on the rear end of the LP turbine shaft. Attach the reaction adapter (part of the hydraulic installation pusher) to the rear thread of the LP turbine shaft.

    9. Tighten the knurled part (part of the hydraulic installation pusher).

    10. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the pusher.

    11. Operate the hydraulic pump to move the carbon seal in to the correct position.

      1. Remove the tools as follows:

      2. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the hydraulic installation pusher.

      3. Release the knurled nut and remove the hydraulic installation pusher.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-070-A00 Install the No. 5 Bearing Inner Race (Pre SBE 72-0165)

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Heat the inner race of the No. 5 bearing ENGINE-NO.5 BEARING PLATE AND OIL DEFLECTOR (72-50-52, 20-060) to approximately 212 deg F (100 deg C).

    4. WARNING

      USE GLOVES TO INSTALL THE HOT INNER RACE OF THE NO. 5 BEARING.

      Install the inner race of the No. 5 bearing to the LP turbine shaft.

    5. Install the IAE 1F10034 Hydraulic installation pusher 1 off on the rear end of the LP turbine shaft. Attach the reaction adapter (part of the hydraulic installation pusher) to the rear thread of the LP turbine shaft.

    6. Tighten the knurled nut (part of the hydraulic installation pusher).

    7. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the pusher.

    8. Operate the hydraulic pump to move the inner race of the No. 5 bearing in to the correct position.

      1. Remove the tools as follows:

      2. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the hydraulic installation pusher.

      3. Release the knurled nut and remove the hydraulic installation pusher.

      4. Remove the reaction adapter.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-070-B00 Install the No. 5 Bearing Inner Race (SBE 72-0165)

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. SBE 72-0165: Replace the No.5 bearing seal spacer with a spacer incorporating fool-proof installation features

    4. Heat the inner race of the No.5 bearing ENGINE-NO.5 BEARING PLATE AND OIL DEFLECTOR (72-50-52, 20-060) to approximately 212 deg F (100 deg C).

    5. WARNING

      USE GLOVES TO INSTALL THE HOT INNER RACE OF THE NO. 5 BEARING.

      Install the inner race of the No. 5 bearing to the LP turbine shaft.

    6. Install the IAE 1F10034 Hydraulic installation pusher 1 off on the rear end of the LP turbine shaft. Attach the reaction adapter (part of the hydraulic installation pusher) to the rear thread of the LP turbine shaft.

    7. Tighten the knurled nut (part of the hydraulic installation pusher).

    8. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the pusher.

    9. Operate the hydraulic pump to move the inner race of the No. 5 bearing into the correct position.

      1. Remove the tools as follows:

      2. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the hydraulic installation pusher.

      3. Release the knurled nut and remove the hydraulic installation pusher.

      4. Remove the reaction adapter.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-071 Install the Bearing Outer Race

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Install the bearing outer race on the IAE 1F10074 Guide pogo stick 1 off.

    4. Install the guide pogo stick. Refer to Step and do Step to Step.

    5. Lift the guide pogo stick so that the feeler gage shims can be removed.

    6. Check the LP turbine rotor for the correct position and adjust if necessary.

    7. Install the bearing outer race by hand.

    8. Remove the guide pogo stick. Refer to Step and do Step.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-072 Install the Retaining Ring and the Deaerators

    2. Install the retaining ring.

    3. Install the lower and upper deaerators to the No. 5 bearing compartment. Align the bolts.

    4. Attach the eight bolts. Torque to 101.784 lbf.in (11.5 Nm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-073 Install the Rear Lock Nut to the LP Turbine Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Install the rear lock nut to the LP turbine shaft and hand-tighten the nut.

    4. Attach the IAE 1P16374 Wrench support 1 off to the inner rear flange of the TEC.

    5. Install the IAE 1F10038 Torque wrench 1 off through the wrench support. Engage the torque wrench with the rear lock nut.

    6. Install the IAE 1F10039 Anti-torque adapter 1 off through the torque wrench. Lock the anti-torque adapter to the LP turbine shaft.

    7. Install the IAE 1F10016 Mechanical wrench 1 off to the torque wrench. Safety the anti-torque adapter to the mechanical wrench with the IAE 1F10040 Anchor wrench plate 1 off.

    8. Operate the mechanical wrench and torque the rear lock nut to 4000 lbfin to 6000 lbfin (452 Nm to 678 Nm).

    9. Put an angle of turn of five to eight degrees to the rear lock nut.

    10. Operate the mechanical wrench to release the torque until the torque value is zero.

    11. Torque the rear lock nut to 4000 lbfin to 6000 lbfin (452 Nm to 678 Nm) again.

    12. Make a correlation mark between the IAE 1F10016 Mechanical wrench and the IAE 1F10038 Torque wrench.

    13. Put an angle of turn of five to eight degrees to the rear lock nut.

    14. Do Step again.

    15. Do Step again and check the correlation mark. The correlation mark must be within two degrees maximum on the same place.

    16. If the correlation mark is within limit, apply last angle of turn of five to eight degrees to the rear lock nut.

    17. If the correlation mark is out of limit, delete the correlation mark and do Step to Step again until correlation mark is within limit.

    18. Apply last angle of turn of five to eight degrees to the rear lock nut.

    19. Align the slot of the rear lock nut with the slot of the LP turbine shaft rear end. The alignment of the rear lock nut must be in torque direction.

      1. Remove the tools from the engine as follows:

      2. Remove the anchor wrench plate and the mechanical wrench.

      3. Disengage the lock mechanism of the anti-torque adapter and remove the adapter.

      4. Remove the torque wrench.

      5. Remove the wrench support.

    20. Safety the rear lock nut with the locking ring and the internal retaining ring.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-074 Install the No. 5 Bearing Nozzle

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Install the new packings NO.5 BEARING OIL JET AND FILTER (72-58-02, 01-040) and the No. 5 bearing packing transfer tube NO.5 BEARING OIL JET AND FILTER (72-58-02, 01-030).

    4. Install the new packing NO.5 BEARING OIL JET AND FILTER (72-58-02, 01-080) onto the bearing nozzle.

    5. Install the No. 5 bearing nozzle into the No. 5 bearing compartment.

    6. Attach the bearing nozzle with two bolts NO.5 BEARING OIL JET AND FILTER (72-58-02, 01-060).

    7. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (9.60 Nm to 11.86 Nm).

    8. Install the two washers NO.5 BEARING OIL JET AND FILTER (72-58-02, 01-020) and the two bolts NO.5 BEARING OIL JET AND FILTER (72-58-02, 01-010) to attach the transfer tube to the bearing nozzle.

    9. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (9.60 Nmto 11.86 Nm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-075 Connect the No. 5 Bearing Pressure Tube Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Attach the loop clamp bracket ENGINE - EXHAUST CASE AND FITTINGS (72-50-53, 20-020) to the external flange of the turbine exhaust case with the two bolts ENGINE - EXHAUST CASE AND FITTINGS (72-50-53, 20-040) and two nuts ENGINE - EXHAUST CASE AND FITTINGS (72-50-53, 20-030).

    4. Torque the nuts to 85 lbf.in to 105 lbf.in (9.60 Nm to 11.86 Nm).

    5. Attach the No. 5 bearing pressure tube ENGINE - EXHAUST CASE AND FITTINGS (72-50-53, 20-010) to the bracket. Install a nut V2500-A5-70-50-53-20A-941A-D (70-50-53, 20-015) and bolt ENGINE - EXHAUST CASE AND FITTINGS (72-50-53, 20-017) to the clamp and support assembly ENGINE - EXHAUST CASE AND FITTINGS (72-50-53, 20-016).

    6. Torque the nut to 36 lbf.in to 45 lbf.in (4.07 Nm to 5.08 Nm).

    7. Attach the No. 5 bearing pressure tube ENGINE - EXHAUST CASE AND FITTINGS (72-50-53, 20-176) to the nipple.

    8. Torque the coupling nut 200 lbf.in to 225 lbf.in (22.597 Nm to 25.422 Nm).

      1. Safety the nut with CoMat 02-141 LOCKWIRE.

      2. WARNING

        BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE COMPRESSED AIR. PUT ON PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND GOGGLES. MAKE SURE THAT ALL PERSONS ARE AT A SAFE DISTANCE.

    9. Prove No. 5 pressure tube passage is clear by blowing air through from the outer case fitting and make sure it comes out of the jets in the compartment.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-077-B00 Install the Blind Cap to the LP Turbine Shaft (SBE 72-0037 and Pre SBE 72-0227)

    2. SBE 72-0037: Replacement of the LP turbine shaft rear end sealing ring

    3. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    4. NOTE

      Use of IAE 1J12259 Seal slider without IAE 1J12243 Sizing sleeve is not permitted.

      1. Extend the sealing ring and install it to the blind cap as follows. Refer to Figure.

      2. Put the blind cap with the rear end down ENGINE-LP TURBINE SHAFT (72-50-41, 01-150) on to a work bench.

      3. Install the IAE 1J12259 Seal slider 1 off on to the blind cap.

      4. Lubricate the new ENGINE-LP TURBINE SHAFT (72-50-41, 01-160) sealing ring with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

      5. Lubricate the outer diameter faces of the seal slider and the blind cap with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

      6. CAUTION

        MOVE THE SEALING RING SMOOTHLY AND EQUALLY OVER THE ALL CIRCUMFERENCE. IF NOT SO, THE SEALING RING IS EXTENDED LOCALLY. LOCAL EXTENSION CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SEALING RING.

        Put the sealing ring on to the seal slider. The open side of the sealing ring must be in down direction.

      7. Push the sealing ring down with four or more fingers until it is installed in to the groove of the blind cap.

      8. CAUTION

        DO NOT INSTALL THE BLIND CAP AND THE SEALING RING IN TO THE LP TURBINE SHAFT BEFORE B.(6). THE SEALING RING DIAMETER IS EXTENDED. THE LP TURBINE SHAFT BORE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EXTENDED SEALING RING.

        Remove the seal slider from the blind cap.

      1. Make the sealing ring diameter smaller as follows. Refer to Figure.

      2. Put the IAE 1J12243 Sizing sleeve 1 off with the front end down on to the work bench.

      3. Lubricate the inner diameter face of the sizing sleeve and the outer diameter of the sealing ring with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

      4. Put the blind cap in to the sizing sleeve. The diaphragm of the blind cap must be in down direction. Refer to Figure position A.

      5. Slowly push down the blind cap until it touches the work bench. Refer to Figure position B.

      6. Keep the blind cap in the sizing sleeve for ten or more minutes.

      7. Remove the sizing sleeve from the blind cap.

      1. Examine the sealing ring.

      2. Make sure that there is no damage on the surface.

      3. CAUTION

        DO NOT CORRECT TWISTED CONDITION OF THE SEALING RING. DISCARD THE TWISTED SEALING RING.

        Make sure that the sealing ring is not twisted. Refer to Figure.

    5. Install the blind cap to the LP turbine shaft. Use theIAE 1J12221 Impact hammer 1 off.

    6. Install the internal retaining ring ENGINE-LP TURBINE SHAFT (72-50-41, 01-100). Refer to Figure.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-077-D00 Install the Blind Cap to the LP Turbine Shaft (SBE 72-0227)

    2. SBE 72-0227: Provide a new blind cap with decreased seal land height.

    3. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

      1. Install the new ENGINE-LP TURBINE SHAFT (72-50-41, 01-160) sealing ring to the blind cap ENGINE-LP TURBINE SHAFT (72-50-41, 01-150) as follows. Refer to Figure:

      2. Put the blind cap with front end down on to a work bench.

      3. Install IAE 1J12522 Seal slider 1 off on the blind cap.

      4. Lubricate the sealing ring with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

      5. Lubricate the outer diameter face of the blind cap with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

      6. Put the sealing ring on the outer diameter of the blind cap. The open side of the sealing ring must be in up direction.

      7. CAUTION

        MOVE THE SEALING RING SMOOTHLY AND EQUALLY OVER ALL THE CIRCUMFERENCE. IF NOT SO, THE SEALING RING IS EXTENDED LOCALLY, LOCAL EXTENSION CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SEALING RING.

        Put the sealing ring down with four or more fingers until it is installed in to the groove of the blind cap.

      8. Remove the seal slider from the blind cap.

      1. Examine the sealing ring.

      2. Make sure that there is no damage on the surface.

      3. CAUTION

        DO NOT CORRECT TWISTED CONDITION OF THE SEALING RING. DISCARD THE TWISTED SEALING RING.

        Make sure that the sealing ring is not twisted. Refer to Figure.

    4. Install the blind cap to the LP turbine shaft. Use theIAE 1J12221 Impact hammer.

    5. CAUTION

      DO NOT USE THE INTERNAL RETAINING RING P/N RR295 WITH THE BLIND CAP P/N 5A1703.

      Install the internal retaining ring ENGINE-LP TURBINE SHAFT (72-50-41, 01-100). Refer to Figure.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-078 Install the Compartment Cover

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Install a new packing ENGINE-NO.5 BEARING COMPARTMENT COVER (72-58-01, 20-160) on to the No. 5 bearing compartment cover ENGINE-NO.5 BEARING COMPARTMENT COVER (72-58-01, 20-120).

    4. Install the No. 5 bearing compartment cover on to the turbine exhaust case.

      1. Do a leak check of the compartment cover and oil tubes.

      2. WARNING

        IF YOU DO NOT SECURE THE COMPARTMENT COVER DURING THE LEAK TEST THERE IS A RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY FROM THE RELEASED COVER.

        1. Install 13 work bolts to the compartment cover. Tighten the bolts.

        2. Install the IAE 1P17523 Blank-off Plate 1 off to the No. 5 bearing outer oil feed tube. Refer to Figure.

        3. Install the IAE 1P16354 Vacuum Test Adapter 1 off to the No. 5 bearing oil scavenge tube outlet with three bolts (part of the adapter). Tighten the bolts. Refer to Figure.

        4. Attach the hose on the IAE 6F10029 Air flow test cart 1 off to the adapter.

        5. Control the air pressure to the adapter to 10 PSI (68.95 kPa).

        6. Apply CoMat 10-045 LEAK CHECK FLUID, BUBBLES-TYPE or CoMat 10-045 LEAK CHECK FLUID, BUBBLES-TYPE around the cover and oil tube interfaces to check for leaks. Replace the seal of any leaking interface with a new seal.

        7. Do the leak test again.

        8. Remove the 13 work bolts.

    5. Install the No.5 bearing shields ENGINE-NO.5 BEARING COMPARTMENT COVER (72-58-01, 20-100 and ENGINE-NO.5 BEARING COMPARTMENT COVER 20-080) on to the cover. Align the bolt holes.

    6. Treat threads and underside of head of the bolts with CoMat 10-129 ANTI-SEIZE PASTE at assembly.

    7. Attach the 13 bolts. Torque to 62 to 72 lbf.in (7.006 to 8.136 Nm). Wipe off excess paste.

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-079 Install the Adapter and the Plate to the Turbine Exhaust Case

      1. Install the IAE 1P16354 Vacuum Test Adapter 1 off to No. 5 bearing outer oil scavenge tube, Figure.

      2. Make sure that the adapter has no damage.

      3. Lubricate the bolts, nuts and washers with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

      4. Install the adapter to the No.5 bearing outer oil scavenge tube and attach with 4 bolts. Torque the bolts to 85 to 105 lbf.in (9.60 to 11.86 Nm).

      1. Install the IAE 1P17523 Blank-off Plate 1 off to No. 5 bearing outer oil feed tube, Fig. 72-00-00-990-098.

      2. Make sure that the plate has no damage.

      3. Lubricate the bolts, nuts and washers with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS.

      4. Install the plate to the No. 5 bearing outer oil feed and attach with 3 bolts. Torque the bolts to 85 to 105 lbf.in (9.60 to 11.86 Nm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-00-00-430-080 Do an Evacuation Check for the No. 5 Bearing Compartment

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Connect the hose of IAE 6F10030 Vacuum test cart 1 off to the nipple of the IAE 1P16354 Vacuum Test Adapter 1 off.

    4. NOTE

      Refer to manufacturer manual for the operation of the vacuum test cart.

      Attach the cart vacuum gage hose to the plug of the IAE 1P16354 Vacuum Test Adapter 1 off.

    5. Set the air pressure at the test port to -20inHg(-508 mmHg) gage. Based on the ambient pressure, refer to the table below for the vacuum pressure in psia.

      3. Install the OIL-PRESSURE OIL TUBES-ENGINE (79-21-49, 16-112) two bolts and the OIL-PRESSURE OIL TUBES-ENGINE (79-21-49, 16-111) two nuts.

      4. Torque the nuts to 85 to 105 lbf.in (9.60 to 11.86 Nm).

      1. Connect the scavenge tube flanges.

      2. Put the V2500-A5-79-22-49-16A-941A-D (79-22-49, 01-117) metallic oil seal in the correct position.

      3. Install the V2500-A5-79-22-49-16A-941A-D (79-22-49, 16-114) four bolts and the V2500-A5-79-22-49-16A-941A-D (79-22-49, 16-110) two threaded plates.

      4. Torque the nuts to 85 to 105 lbf.in (9.60 to 11.86 Nm).

      5. Safety the bolts with CoMat 02-119 LOCKWIRE.

    3. Safety the clipping points. Torque the bolts to 36 to 45 lbf.in (4 to 5 Nm).
