General

This TASK gives the procedure for the inspection of the Stage 2 HPT heat shield.

All Fig/Item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC.

The policy that is necessary for inspection is given in the SPM TASK 70-20-01-200-501.

The practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK numbers are in the SPM.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-45-31-220-125 Visually Examine the Heat Shield for Sign of Thermal Distress

    2. Examine the heat shield for indication of thermal distress, such as plastic deformation (typically out bulging) and/or heat tint.

    1. SUBTASK 72-45-31-220-126 Examine the Metallographic Sections for Thermal Distress

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Cut and mount radial - longitudinal metallographic sections through the heat shield from all the areas that show thermal distress. Cut from each of the three locations (one near each end and one near the longitudinal center). Each specimen must be 0.500 in. (12.70 mm) in minimum length

      1. Polish the specimens to get a surface equal to one-micron diamond finish

      2. Use ASTM E3, Table 5 or use an equivalent method

    1. SUBTASK 72-45-31-220-127 Examine the Stage 2 HPT Heat Shield for Hardness

      1. Examine the heat shield for Vickers hardness.

      2. You can use 22 lb (10 kg) load for measure of Vickers hardness (HV) for each metallographic sections. Make a minimum of five hardness measurements for each section. Hardness indentations must be centered on the sections thickness and approximately equal distance apart over the section's length

      3. If the Vickers hardness is equal to or less than HV 344, then it indicates that the part was exposed to more than 1500 deg F (815.55 deg C) and that an oil fire might have occurred.

      4. If the Vickers hardness is equal to or less than HV 344, then discard the Stage 1 HPT inner air seal HPT Stage 1 Rotating Inner Air Seal And Damper (72-45-13,01-020), the Stage 1 outer air seal ENGINE-STAGE 1 HPT AIR SEAL (OUTER) (72-45-12,01-040), the Stage 2 HPT air seal HP Turbine (HPT) Rotor And Stator Assembly (72-45-00,01-080), Stage 1 HPT hub HPT Stage 1 Hub (72-45-11,01-010) or HPT Stage 1 Hub (72-45-11,01-011), Stage 2 HPT hub ENGINE-STAGE 2 TURBINE HUB (72-45-31,01-011) and Stage 2 retaining plate HPT Stage 2 Blade Retaining Plate And Related Parts (72-45-33,01-020) and replace with new parts
