General

This TASK gives the procedure to install the LP compressor booster stage assembly on to the LP compressor/intermediate case module on which the HP system module and the external gearbox module are installed.

Where TASK 72-32-00-030-006-C00 (DISASSEMBLY-006, CONFIG-003) is used for removal of the LP compressor booster stage assembly, it is recommended to use this TASK for installation of the LP compressor booster stage assembly on to the LP compressor/intermediate case module.

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

For all parts identified in a different Chapter/Section/Subject, the applicable Chapter/Section/Subject comes before the Fig/item number.

For standard torque data and procedures, refer to the SPM TASK 70-41-00-400-501 and SPM TASK 70-41-02-400-501.

Special torque data is identified with the symbol * after the torque value.

Lubricate all threads and abutment faces of nuts and bolts with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS, unless other lubricants are referred to in the procedure.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-347 Make sure that the Engine is in a Horizontal Position

    2. Make sure that the engine is in a horizontal position. If not, turn the engine from the vertical to the horizontal position. Refer to TASK 72-00-40-560-002 (INSTALLATION-002) or TASK 72-00-50-560-004 (INSTALLATION-013).

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-348 Adjust the Angular Position of the LPC Stub Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Put a workmat in position in the fan case.

    4. NOTE

      The retaining protector is installed in TASK 72-32-00-030-006-C00 (DISASSEMBLY-006, CONFIG-003).

      Remove the retaining protector (IAE 1J12182 Retaining protector) from the LPC stub shaft.

    5. Install the three aligning pins (part of the IAE 1J12106 Aligning pin set 1 off) in to three of 24 nuts of the rotor center shaft through the holes B.

    6. Turn each aligning pin until the R mark line on the pin reaches the bottom of the curvic teeth.

      1. Adjust the angular position of the stub shaft.

      2. Install IAE 1J12026 Turning handle 1 off on to the stub shaft with the two wing bolts and washers (part of the turning handle).

      3. Turn the turning handle until the correlation U-slot in the stub shaft becomes at 12 o'clock position.

      4. Remove the turning handle.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-349 Prepare the Cantilever Sling and the Sling Adapter (Sling Assembly)

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    3. Attach the first hoist to link of IAE 1J12108 Sling adapter 1 off and lift up.

    4. Move the sling adapter on to the work bench and remove the first hoist from the sling adapter.

    5. Attach the second hoist to the shackle (part of IAE 1J12105 Cantileer sling 1 off).

    6. Lift and attach the cantilever sling to the sling adapter and safety them with the pin.

    7. Attach the first hoist to the lifting ring of the cantilever sling.

    8. Engage the pin to the outer holes of bracket of the cantilever sling.

    9. Make the rope/chains of the first hoist tighter.

    10. Move the second hoist from the shackle of the cantilever sling to the link of sling adapter.

    11. Make the rope/chains of the second hoist tighter.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-350 Install the Sling Assembly to the LP Compressor Booster Stage Assembly (LPC Assembly)

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    3. NOTE

      The LPC assembly is installed on the storage stand in TASK 72-32-00-030-006-C00 (DISASSEMBLY-006, CONFIG-003) or TASK 72-32-80-440-001-A00 (ASSEMBLY, CONFIG-001).

      Move the sling assembly with the first hoist and the second hoist adjacent to the forward flange of the LPC assembly.

    4. Put the sling assembly on the LPC assembly.

    5. Attach the flange of the sling adapter to the forward flange of the LPC stage 1.5-2.5 disk with the six bolts and washers at the holes C. Tighten the bolts.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-351 Move the LPC Assembly from the Storage Stand to Local Heater

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Remove the holding block from the storage stand.

      1. Move the LPC assembly from the storage stand to IAE 1J13109 0AM53 heater 1 off.

      2. Slowly lift the LPC assembly until it is clear of the storage stand.

      3. Move the LPC assembly above the local heater and slowly lower the LPC assembly on to the local heater.

      1. Remove the sling assembly from the LPC assembly.

      2. Remove the six bolts and washers which attach the sling adapter to the LPC assembly.

      3. Lift the sling assembly.

    4. Connect the cables of the local heater to IAE 6F10027 Heater control unit 1 off.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-352 Install the LPC Assembly to the Engine

      1. NOTE

        Install the LPC assembly to LPC stage 2.5 stator assembly (Stage 2.5 Stator) before the LPC assembly becomes cool and the jointing compound becomes dry.

        Increase the temperature of the LPC assembly and LPC rear case, Figure.

      2. Increase the temperature of the disk front flange of the LPC assembly to 248 deg F (120 deg C) with the local heater.

      3. Increase the temperature of the LP compressor rear case rear flange of the LPC assembly to 142 deg F (60 deg C) with a hot air gun.

      1. WARNING

        DO NOT TOUCH THE LPC ASSEMBLY WITHOUT PROTECTIVE GLOVES.

        WARNING

        HOT PARTS CAN CAUSE REDDENING AND BLISTERING OF THE SKIN IF THE HANDS ARE NOT PROTECTED.

        WARNING

        IMMERSE THE CONTACTED AREA IN COLD WATER FOR 10 MINUTES IF THE SKIN IS BURNED. IMMEDIATELY GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IF PAIN OR BLISTERING PERSISTS.

        Install the sling assembly to the LPC assembly, Figure.

      2. Move the sling assembly with the first hoist and the second hoist adjacent to the forward flange of the LPC assembly.

      3. Adjust the position of the LPC assembly to align the top position of the sling adapter with the correlation mark * on the LPC stage 1.5-2.5 disk of LPC assembly, Figure.

      4. Put the sling assembly on the LPC assembly.

      5. Attach the flange of the sling adapter to the forward flange of the LPC stage 1.5-2.5 disk with the six bolts and washers at the holes C. Tighten the bolts.

      1. Remove the LPC assembly from the local heater, Figure.

      2. Slowly lift the two hoists equally at the same time until the LPC assembly is clear of the local heater.

      1. Adjust the center of the gravity of the sling assembly and the LPC assembly, Figure.

      2. Disengage the pin from the outer holes and engage to inner holes of the bracket of the cantilever sling.

      3. Turn the adjustment handle to align the witness hole in the side plate with the S4-mark on the cantilever sling beam.

      4. Lock the adjustment handle in position.

      5. Adjust the two hoists to turn the LPC assembly to the horizontal position.

      6. Remove the second hoist from the link of the sling adapter.

      1. Apply jointing compound to the mating faces on the stage 2.5 stator, Figure.

      2. Use a clean cloth made moist with CoMat 01-124 ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL to clean the mating faces.

      3. NOTE

        Do not get the jointing compound into the threaded holes of the clinch nuts on the stage 2.5 stator.

        Apply CoMat 04-004 JOINTING COMPOUND, LIGHT GRADE to the mating faces with a soft brush.

      1. Install the LPC assembly to the engine.

        1. Install the LPC assembly on to the rotor center shaft before the LPC assembly becomes cold.

        2. Align the correlation mark * on the disk of the LPC assembly with the correlation U-slot in the stub shaft, Figure.

        3. Slowly move the LPC assembly on to the rotor center shaft through the aligning pins, Figure.

        4. Attach the LPC assembly to the rotor center shaft with the four of 24 bolts LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-605) at the holes E. Tighten the bolts lightly, Figure and Figure.

          1. Remove the slinging assembly from the LPC assembly.

          2. Turn the adjustment handle to align the witness hole in the side plate with S3-mark on the beam (part of the cantilever sling), Figure.

          3. Remove the six bolts and washers (part of the sling adapter) which attach the sling adapter to the LPC assembly, Figure.

          4. Move the sling assembly forward until it is clear of the engine.

        5. Install the remaining 20 bolts LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-605) which attach the LPC assembly to the rotor center shaft, Figure. Tighten the bolts lightly.

        1. Attach the LPC assembly to the stage 2.5 stator, Figure.

          1. NOTE

            The holding supports are installed to the LPC assembly in TASK 72-32-00-030-006-C00 (DISASSEMBLY-006, CONFIG-003) or TASK 72-32-80-440-A00 (ASSEMBLY, CONFIG-001).

            Remove the holding supports set (IAE 1J13107 Holding support) from the LPC assembly, Figure.

          2. Remove the screw, the two washers and the nuts which attach each support to the LP compressor front case of the LPC assembly.

          3. Remove the two wing nuts and adapters which attach each support to the front flange of the LPC assembly.

        2. Align the top position of the LP compressor front case with the TOP mark of the stage 2.5 stator, Figure.

        3. NOTE

          Do not install the bolts V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-720) and the brackets A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H in this SUBTASK. The bolts and the brackets are installed in Step (step 12).

          Attach the LPC rear case to the stage 2.5 stator with the 26 bolts LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-615) and washers LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-618), Figure, Figure and Figure.

        4. Tighten the bolts lightly.

      2. When the LPC assembly becomes cool, loosen the 24 bolts LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-605) fully.

      3. Torque the 24 bolts LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-605) to between 180 and 220 lbfin (20.00 and 25.00 Nm).

      4. Torque the 26 bolts LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-615) to between 36 and 45 lbfin (4.00 to 5.00 Nm) in the sequence given in Figure.

      5. Make sure that no gap between the LPC assembly and the rotor center shaft is found, Figure.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-353 Install the Retaining Protector on to the Curvic Teeth of the Stub Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    3. Remove the three aligning pins from the stub shaft.

    4. Align the three guide pin holes in IAE 1J12182 Retaining protector 1 off with the three guide pins of the stub shaft.

    5. Attach the retaining protector to the front face of the stub shaft flange with the three bolts (part of the retaining protector). Tighten the bolts.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-354 Install the Bolts to the FEGV's (Pre SBE 72-0094)

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install the 40 bolts LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-377) in to the bushes of the stage 2.5 stator through the plate nuts of the FEGV's.

      2. Adjust the positions of the plate nuts and the FEGV's to align the plate nuts with the bush holes.

      3. Put the 40 washers LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-375) and the bolts into positions and tighten the bolts lightly.

    3. Torque the 40 bolts LP Compressor (LPC) - Intermediate Structure Module (72-32-00, 01-377) to 160 to 200* lbfin (17.50 to 22.50 Nm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-355 Fill the Recesses in the FEGV's with Cold Curing Silicone Compound (Pre SBE 72-0094)

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    3. Make a clean cloth or a soft brush moist with CoMat 01-031 ACETONE (CH3)2CO or CoMat 01-124 ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL.

    4. Clean the surfaces of the 40 recesses D in the FEGV inner platforms with the clean cloth or the soft brush.

    5. NOTE

      Apply the primer in less than eight hours after the surfaces are cleaned.

      Apply thin layer of CoMat 08-014 PRIMER, SILICONE ADHESIVE/SEALANT to the face of the recesses D with a soft brush. Air dry for 30 minutes minimum.

      1. Fill the silicone compound into the recesses D from the nozzle of the compound tube.

      2. NOTE

        Press the silicone compound into position immediately after it is applied to each recess.

        Press the silicone compound into position with a spatula.

    6. Cure the silicone compound at the room temperature for 48 hours. Do not push the silicone compound during the time.

    1. SUBTASK 72-32-00-430-356 Install the Brackets to the Engine

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Install the eight brackets A V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-600), B V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-675), C V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-645), D V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-630), E V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-705), F V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-615), G V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-690) and H V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-660).

      2. NOTE

        The brackets E, F, G and H are almost the same in their shapes. The distance between the two locating pins on each bracket is slightly different. Make sure of the Fig/Item numbers and part numbers to install them correctly.

        Attach the brackets to the engine with the 23 bolts V2500-A5-72-32-93-01A-941A-D (72-32-93, 01-720).

      3. Torque the bolts to 36 to 45 lbfin (4.00 to 5.00 Nm).
