TASK 72-41-00-440-002-B00 HPC Assembly - Assemble The HPC Front Cases To The HPC Rotor Assembly, Assembly-002

General

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

For all parts identified in a different Chapter/Section/Subject, the applicable Chapter/Section/Subject comes before the Fig/item numbers.

For standard torque data and procedures refer to SPM TASK 70-41-00-400-501, SPM TASK 70-41-01-400-501 and SPM TASK 70-41-02-400-501.

Special torque data and assembly tolerances are included in this procedure.

Lubricate all threads and abutment faces of nuts and bolts with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS, unless other lubricants are referred to in the procedure.

To identify, lubricate and install seal rings, refer to SPM TASK 70-44-01-400-501.

For lockwire data and procedures refer to SPM TASK 70-42-05-400-501.

For safety cable data and procedures refer to SPM TASK 70-42-08-400-501.

Safety the threaded fasteners in the ATA Chapter/Section/Subject 72-41-34 as applicable with CoMat 02-274 SAFETY CABLE KIT or CoMat 02-275 SAFETY CABLE KIT.

After assembly apply CoMat 07-038 AIR DRYING ENAMEL to any damaged surface protection, joint flange and attach parts. Use the correct color of the air drying enamel. Refer to SPM TASK 70-63-02-380-501.

The number for each radial location must be identified in a clockwise direction. These start at the engine top position when you look from the rear of the engine, unless stated differently in the procedure.

Refer to Figure and Figure for a sectional view of the HP compressor assembly.

This TASK gives the procedure to assemble the HP compressor front cases on to the HP compressor rotor assembly. TASK 72-41-00-440-001-A00 (ASSEMBLY-001, CONFIG-001) gives the procedure to install the HP compressor rear cases and vanes on to the HP compressor rotor assembly.

For practices and processes referred to in the procedure by the TASK number are in SPM.

Safety Requirements

CAUTION

DURING THE ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE, THE HP COMPRESSOR REAR AND FRONT CASE PARTS MUST NOT TOUCH OR DAMAGE THE HP COMPRESSOR ROTOR BLADES. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS, HP COMPRESSOR ROTOR BLADE WILL BE DAMAGED.

Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-118 Install the Holding Fixture on to the Compressor Rear Outer Case and the HP Compressor Rear Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install IAE 1R18220 Holding fixture 1 off on to the compressor rear outer case and the HP compressor rear shaft.

      2. Carefully install the holding fixture on to the compressor rear outer case and the HP compressor rear shaft.

      3. Align the 4 holes in the flange of the holding fixture with four bolt holes in the outer flange of the compressor rear outer case.

      4. Adjust the three pushers so that the flange of the holding fixture touches the outer flange of the compressor rear outer case.

      5. Install the four screws, the four washers and the four nuts, part of the holding fixture. These attach the holding fixture to the compressor rear outer case.

      6. Tighten the four nuts.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-119 Install the Support Ring on the Build Stand

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Adjust the position of IAE 1R18220 Holding fixture 1 off.

      2. Turn the three pushers to lift the HP compressor rear outer case. Only lift the HP compressor rear outer case the minimum distance to permit the removal of the tools.

      1. Remove the eight bolts which attach the support ring to the support stand.

      2. Remove the two halves of the support ring.

      3. Release the six captive bolts which attach the support stand to the build stand.

      4. Remove the two halves of the support stand from the build stand.

      1. Install IAE 1R18222 Support rod 2 off on to the build stand. Refer to Figure.

      2. Align the split line flanges of the support ring with the two dowels in the build stand.

      3. Install the six bolts, part of the build stand, to attach the support ring to the build stand.

      4. Tighten the six bolts.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-120 Install the HP Compressor Front Cases

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure

      1. Install the stage 4, 5 and 6 sealing strips. Refer to Figure.

      2. Install the two sealing strips HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-678) at the stage 4 rotor path ring HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-690). Install the sealing strips at the opposite split line flanges.

      3. Install the two sealing strips HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-679) at the stage 5 rotor path ring HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-695). Install the sealing strips at the opposite split line flanges.

      4. Install the two sealing strips HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-680) at the stage 6 rotor path ring HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-700). Install the sealing strips at the opposite split line flanges.

      1. Install the upper and lower half HP compressor front case HP COMPRESSOR SPLIT CASE (72-41-31, 01-400). Refer to Figure.

      2. Carefully put the upper and lower half HP compressor front cases on to the build stand.

      3. Align the pin holes in the HP compressor front cases rear flange with the correct holes in the compressor rear outer case.

      4. The pin holes at TDC and BDC are off set.

      5. Make sure the two large and two small locating pins in the support ring are engaged in the correct holes in the HP compressor front cases.

      6. Align the split line flanges. Make sure the stage 4, 5 and 6 sealing strips are correctly engaged in the opposite rotor path ring segment.

      1. Install the HP compressor front case split line flange bolts, spacers and nuts. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      2. CAUTION

        THE BOLTS ARE A CLOSE TOLERANCE FIT. THEY MUST NOT BE TURNED WHEN BEING INSTALLED.

        NOTE

        Do not install bolts, nuts and spacers at the bolt positions 11 and 31.

        Pre SBE 74-0001: Install the 30 bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-108) the 30 spacers HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-104) and the 30 nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-102) at the split line flanges.

        1. At the bolt positions 11 and 31 install the upper and lower support brackets HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 04-600 and HPC Assembly 04-650).

        2. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-112) through the upper and lower support brackets and the split line flange.

        3. Install the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-101) on to the bolts.

      3. Torque the nuts in sequence to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20.00 Nm to 25.00 Nm). Refer to Figure.

      4. Release the three pushers on the holding fixture so that the HP compressor rear outer case touches the HP compressor front case. Make sure the dowel pin holes are aligned. Refer to Figure and Figure.

        NOTE

        Do not install bolts, nuts and spacers at the bolt positions 7, 11, 29 and 31.
      5. SBE 74-0001: Install the 28 bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-108) the 28 spacers HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-104) and the 28 nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-102) at the split line flanges.

        1. At the bolt positions 7, 11, 29 and 31 install the upper and lower support brackets HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 04-600), HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 04-650, HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 04-620 and HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 04-670).

        2. Install the four bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-112) through the upper and lower support brackets and the split line flange.

        3. Install the four nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-101) on to the bolts.

      6. Torque the nuts in sequence to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20.00 Nm to 25.00 Nm). Refer to Figure.

      7. Release the three pushers on the holding fixture so that the HP compressor rear outer case touches the HP compressor front case. Make sure the dowel pin holes are aligned. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-121 Install the HP Compressor Front Case Rear Flange Attach Parts (Pre SBE 72-0189, Pre SBE 79-0088, SBE 72-0176, SBE 72-0189 and SBE 79-0088)

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Refer to Figure and Figure.or the arrangement of the flange securing features.

    4. Install the 10 pins HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-322) and the 10 lock plates HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-320) together with 10 bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the 10 nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302). Lightly tighten the nuts at the positions A.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-780).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the HP compressor front case rear flange at the bolt positions 3 and 4.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-240).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt positions 5 and 6.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-260).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt positions 7 and 8.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the rear upper bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-280).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the HP compressor front case rear flange at the bolt positions 10 and 11.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. SBE 72-0176: Install the HP system module serial number identification plate and bracket.

      2. Apply CoMat 08-013 COLD CURING SILICONE COMPOUND to the identification plate HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-010) and bond the plate to the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-020). Refer to SPM TASK 70-36-02-360-501, SUBTASK 70-36-02-360-020.

      3. Attach the plate to the bracket with the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-014) the two washers HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-013) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-012). Torque tighten the bolts 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4 Nm to 5 Nm.).

      4. NOTE

        The bolt and nut at position 11 was installed during installation of bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00,03-280).

        Put the plate/bracket assembly into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at bolt positions 11 and 12.

      5. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the assembly the flange rear face.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-320).

      2. Pre SBE 72-0189: Put the bracket into position on the HP compressor front case rear flange at the bolt positions 16 and 17.

      3. SBE 72-0189 or SBE 79-0088: Put the bracket into position on the HP compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt positions 16 and 17.

      4. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      5. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the front upper bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-310).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the HP compressor front case rear flange at the bolt positions 18 and 19.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Pre SBE 72-0189: Install the brackets HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-400, HPC Assembly 03-380 and HPC Assembly 03-350).

      2. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00,03-400) into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt positions 20 and 21.

      3. Install the bolt HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the nut HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) at the position 20.

      4. Install the actuator rear bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-380) into position on the HP compressor front case rear flange at the bolt positions 21 and 22.

      5. Install the bolt HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-314) and the nut HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) at the position 21 to attach the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-400) and the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-380) to the flange.

      6. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-350) into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt positions 22 to 23.

      7. Install the bolt HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-314) and the nut HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) at the position 22 to attach the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-380) and the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-350) to the flange.

      8. Install the bolt HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the nut HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) at the position 23.

      9. Lightly tighten the nuts.

      1. SBE 72-0189 or SBE 79-0088: Install the brackets HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-380 and HPC Assembly 03-575).

      2. Put the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-380) into position on the HP compressor front case rear flange at the bolt positions 21 and 22.

      3. Install the bolt HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the nut HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) at the position 21.

      4. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00,03-575) on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt positions 22 and 23.

      5. Install the bolt HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-314) and the nut HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) at the position 22 to attach the brackets HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-380 and HPC Assembly 03-575) to the flange.

      6. Install the bolt HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the nut HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) at the position 23.

      7. Lightly tighten the nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-360).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt positions 25 and 26.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-510).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt position 30 and 31.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-530).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the HP compressor front case rear flange at the bolt positions 35 and 36.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-550).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the HP compressor front case rear flange at the bolt positions 38 and 39.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-720).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt holes 43 and 44.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-760).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt holes 45 and 46. Bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-760).

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the brackets to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-770).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt holes 52 and 53.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-314) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

      1. Install the bracket HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 03-790).

      2. Put the bracket into position on the compressor rear outer case front flange at the bolt holes 54 and 1.

      3. Install the two bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the two nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) to attach the bracket to the flange.

      4. Lightly tighten the two nuts.

    5. Install the remaining bolts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-308) and the nuts HPC Assembly (72-41-00, 01-302) at the remaining bolt holes. Refer to Figure.

    6. Torque the 54 nuts to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20.00 Nm to 25.00 Nm).

      1. Remove the IAE 1R18220 Holding fixture 1 off.

      2. Remove the four screws, the four washers and the four nuts which attach the holding fixture to the compressor rear outer case.

      3. Carefully remove the holding fixture from the HP compressor assembly.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-122-A00 Install the Variable Inlet Guide Vane Connectors (Pre SBE 72-0400, Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: and SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416:)

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    3. Install IAE 1R18423 Rigging pin 4 off or IAE 1R18892 Rigging pin 4 off and IAE 1R18248 Rigging pin 2 or IAE 1R18638 Rigging pin 2 off into the upper and lower actuating rings (HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-440) and HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-540)). Install three rigging pins in each half of the actuating ring.

      1. Install the variable inlet guide vane connectors HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-200).

      2. Remove the two rigging pins adjacent to the HP compressor front case right hand split line flange.

      3. Remove the four nuts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-123) and the four actuating levers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-120) from the inlet guide vanes at the positions 1, 2, 39 and 40.

      4. Put the left hand connector into position on the upper and lower actuating rings.

      5. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the three hollow dowels HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34,0 2-206) and the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      6. SBE 72-0385: Install the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      7. SBE 72-0416: Install the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202) and the three washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-205), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      8. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the hollow dowel HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-208) and the bolt HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the lower actuating ring. Torque the bolt to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm). Safety the bolt with CoMat 02-274 SAFETY CABLE KIT or CoMat 02-275 SAFETY CABLE KIT or CoMat 02-126 LOCKWIRE.

      9. SBE 72-0385: Install the bolt HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the lower actuating ring. Torque the bolt to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm). Safety the bolt with CoMat 02-274 SAFETY CABLE KIT or CoMat 02-275 SAFETY CABLE KIT or CoMat 02-126 LOCKWIRE.

      10. SBE 72-0416: Install the bolt HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-203) and the washer HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-207) which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the lower actuating ring. Torque the bolt to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm). Safety the bolt with CoMat 02-274 SAFETY CABLE KIT or CoMat 02-275 SAFETY CABLE KIT or CoMat 02-126 LOCKWIRE.

      11. Remove the two rigging pins adjacent to the HP compressor front case left hand split line flange.

      12. Install the remaining connector as given in Step to Step on to the actuating rings adjacent to the inlet guide vanes at the positions 19 thru 22.

      1. Install the actuating levers on to the inlet guide vanes and connectors. These were removed in Step.

      2. Install the actuating levers on to the inlet guide vanes at the positions 1, 2, 19 to 22, 39 and 40. Install the pins of the actuating levers into the correct location in the connectors.

      3. Install the nuts on to the inlet guide vane spindles. These were removed in Step.

      4. Remove the remaining two rigging pins from the actuating rings.

      5. Set the inlet guide vane actuating levers parallel with the HP compressor assembly centre line. This is the null position.

      6. Torque the eight nuts, installed in Step to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the three hollow dowels HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-206) and the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      6. SBE 72-0385: Install the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202), which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      7. SBE 72-0416: Install the three bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-202) and the washer HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 02-205) which attach the left hand VIGV connector to the upper and lower actuating rings. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      11. Remove the two rigging pins adjacent to the HP compressor front case left hand split line flange.

SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the two washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the right hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      8. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      9. Remove the two rigging pins adjacent to the HP compressor left hand split line flange.

      10. Install the left hand connector as given in steps C.(2) thru (8) on to the actuating rings adjacent to the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 30 thru 35.

      1. Torque the nuts which attach the actuating levers to the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 1 thru 3, 30 thru 35 and 62 thru 64.

      2. Remove the remaining two rigging pins from the actuating rings.

      3. Set the stage 5 actuating levers parallel with the HP compressor assembly centre line. This is the null position.

      4. Torque the 12 nuts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-125-B00 Install the Stage 5 Actuating Ring Connectors (SBE 72-0400, Pre SBE 72-0348, Pre SBE 72-0385or SBE 72-0416:, SBE 72-0348 and SBE 72-0385or SBE 72-0416:)

      2. During the assembly procedure lubricate the applicable areas of the VSV mechanism for each stage with a thin layer of 10-108 teflon based lubricant, refer to TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00, SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-211.

      3. Install the build pins, refer to TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00, SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-209.

      1. Install the two connectors HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-200).

      2. Remove the two rigging pins adjacent to the HP compressor front case right hand split line flange.

      3. Put the right hand connector into position on the upper and lower actuating rings adjacent to the stator vanes at the positions 1 thru 3 and 62 thru 64. Engage the connector on the pins of the stator vanes actuating levers. Make sure the actuating lever pins are correctly engaged in the connector.

      4. Pre SBE 72-0348: Install the four hollow dowels HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-206) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the right hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating.

      5. SBE 72-0348: Install the four washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the right hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      6. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the four washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the right hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      7. SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: Install the two washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-204) and the four bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-202), which attach the right hand stage 5 connector and connector housings to the stage 5 upper and lower actuating ring.

      8. Torque the bolts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      9. Remove the two rigging pins adjacent to the HP compressor left hand split line flange.

      10. Install the left hand connector as given in steps B.(2) thru (8) on to the actuating rings adjacent to the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 30 thru 35.

      11. Pre SBE 72-0385 or SBE 72-0416: After the installation of the connectors make sure that the dowels are correctly installed, refer to TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00, SUBTASK 72-41-30-220-446.

      1. Torque the nuts which attach the actuating levers to the stage 5 stator vanes at the positions 1 thru 3, 30 thru 35 and 62 thru 64.

      2. Remove the remaining two rigging pins from the actuating rings.

      3. Set the stage 5 actuating levers parallel with the HP compressor assembly centre line. This is the null position.

      4. Torque the 12 nuts to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-141 Do the HP Compressor Front Case VSV Clearance Checks (SBE 72-0400)

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. NOTE

        The SUBTASK references which follow are in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011, CONFIG-002).

        Follow the procedure in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011, CONFIG-002) when specified and this SUBTASK.

        The clearances must agree with checking limits in Table 1.

      2. During the clearance checking procedure it could be necessary to lubricate the applicable areas of a particular stage of the VSV mechanism. Use CoMat 10-108 HIGH PERFORMANCE PENETRATING LUBRICANT WITH TEFLON (R), refer to TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00, SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-211.

      1. Measure the clearance for each stage between each centralizing pad, compensating block housing pad and the contact surface of the HP compressor front case.

      2. Install all the build pins for each stage, refer to TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00, SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-209. The build pins must stay in the installed position throughout this procedure for each stage in turn.

      3. Measure and make a record of the clearance and the location of each stage. During the procedure the feeler gauge(s) must stay in position as each stage is checked in turn. A clearance of zero is acceptable.

      4. NOTE

        If you check the clearance with a feeler gauge in an axial position it will give large errors.

        Use feeler gauge(s) between each pad and circumferentially along the length of the actuating ring. Use the positions for the feeler gauges given in Figure.or the left side of the HP compressor case and Figure.or the right side of the HP compressor case.

      5. Check the clearance at the next circumferentially adjacent pad and the remaining pad clearances until all the eight pad clearances are measured for each stage. Use the procedure in steps (2) and (3).

      6. Add the eight clearances for each stage and refer to the limits below which gives the total clearance for each stage and for each maximum clearance.

      7. NOTE

        The procedure to set the pad clearances is given in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00, SUBTASK 72-41-30-440-210.

        If the clearances for each stage are more than the limits given in the following table of limits (Table 1) then the particular connector must be removed and the actuating ring must be checked for misalignment marks. Refer to the checking procedure for the correct installation of the dowels given in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00, SUBTASK 72-41-30-220-446.

        If marks are seen then it could be possible to meet the limits in table 1 by re-installing the connectors and rechecking the clearances. Use the above procedure to re-check the clearances so they are within the limits of table 1.

        If marks are not seen then the stage must have the pad clearances reset from the start of the procedure, that is, as given in TASK 72-41-30-440-011-B00 (ASSEMBLY-011, CONFIG-002).

      8. Remove all the build pins and all the feeler gauges after checking each stage in turn.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-126 Install the Lift Fixture and the Lifter on to the HP Compressor Assembly

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

      1. Install IAE 1R18217 Lift fixture 1 off on to the HP compressor assembly.

      2. Use an approved hoist and sling and lift the lift fixture on to the rear of the HP compressor assembly. Carefully lower the lift fixture on to the HP compressor shaft and the compressor rear outer case.

      3. Remove the hoist and sling.

      4. Adjust the position of the thumbscrews so that the frame touches the compressor rear outer case rear flange.

      5. Install the six bolts, the 12 washers and the six nuts to attach the lift fixture to the compressor rear outer case.

      6. Tighten the six nuts.

      1. Install IAE 1R18441 Lifting adapter 1 off on to the compressor shaft.

      2. Put the lifter on to the end of the compressor shaft.

      3. Turn the lifter clockwise to install it on the compressor shaft.

        1. Continue to turn the lifter until:

        2. The location pin is clear of the sleeve and.

        3. The lifter is tight on the compressor shaft.

      4. Tighten the lockscrew in the lifter. Make sure the lockscrew goes into a slot on the end of the compressor shaft. If the lockscrew does not go into a slot, turn the lifter counterclockwise until the lockscrew goes into the first available slot.

      5. Turn the sleeve until a hoist can be attached to the lift eye.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-127 Install the HP Compressor Assembly on the Safety Support Stand

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Attach an approved hoist to the lifter on the HP compressor assembly.

    4. Adjust the hoist until it almost holds the weight of the HP compressor assembly.

    5. Remove the six bolts which attach the HP compressor assembly to the support ring on the build stand.

    6. Use the hoist installed in step A and vertically lift the HP compressor assembly from the build stand.

      Do not remove the hoist.

      2. Remove the six bolts and the six nuts which attach the split ring assembly to the variable inlet guide vane rear half shroud.

      3. Pre SBE 72-0410: Remove the two halves of the split ring assembly IAE 1R18250 Split ring assembly.

      4. Apply a thin layer of CoMat 04-007 SILICONE GREASE to the 40 half bushes HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-190) outer surface.

      5. Install the 40 half bushes into the variable inlet guide vane front half shroud.

        NOTE

        The inlet guide vane rear upper half shroud has four location dowels.
      6. Align the variable inlet guide vane front and rear half shrouds.

      7. Install the 20 bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-138), the 40 dee-headed washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-134) and the 20 nuts HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-130). These attach the two halves of the inlet guide vane front shroud.

      8. Torque the 20 nuts to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4.00 Nm to 5.00 Nm).

      9. SBE 72-0410: Remove the two halves of the split ring assembly IAE 1R19633 Split ring assembly. Make sure the 40 one piece bushes are attached to the stator vanes.

      10. Apply a thin layer of CoMat 04-007 SILICONE GREASE to the 40 bushes HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-190) outer surface.

      11. NOTE

        The inlet guide vane rear upper half shroud has four location dowels.

        Align the variable inlet guide vane front and rear half shrouds.

      12. Install the 20 bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-138), the 40 dee-headed washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-134) and the 20 nuts HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-130). These attach the two halves of the inlet guide vane front shroud.

      13. Torque the 20 nuts to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4.00 Nm to 5.00 Nm).

      10. SBE 72-0410: Remove the two halves of the split ring assembly IAE 1R19633 Split ring assembly. Make sure the 40 one piece bushes are attached to the stator vanes.

      11. Apply a thin layer of CoMat 04-007 SILICONE GREASE to the 40 bushes HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-190) outer surface.

        NOTE

        The inlet guide vane rear upper half shroud has four location dowels.
      12. Align the variable inlet guide vane front and rear half shrouds.

      13. Install the 20 bolts HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-138), the 40 dee-headed washers HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-134) and the 20 nuts HPC Variable Stator Vane Shrouds And Related Part (72-41-33, 01-130). These attach the two halves of the inlet guide vane front shroud.

      14. Torque the 20 nuts to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4.00 Nm to 5.00 Nm).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-129 Install the HP Compressor Assembly in the Build Stand

    3. Use the hoist installed in Step and lift the HP compressor assembly from the safety support stand.

      1. Install the HP compressor assembly on to IAE 1R18214 Build stand 1 off.

      2. Install the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-472) and the two nuts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-474) to attach the bracket to the front bearing housing.

      3. Install the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-475) and the two washers V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-476) to attach the bracket to the rear bearing housing.

      4. Torque the two nuts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-474) to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      5. Torque the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-475) to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

    4. Measure the torque that is required to turn the crankshaft assembly. This must not be more than 200 lbfin (22.60 Nm).

      1. Install the stage 4 VSV crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-520) on the crankshaft.

      2. Attach the stage 4 VSV crank lever to the crankshaft with two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-523) and two nuts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-522).

      3. Torque the nuts to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20.00 Nm to 25.00 Nm).

      6. Torque the four bolts to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20.00 Nm to 25.00 Nm).

      1. Install the bearing housing support bracket V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-470) on to the front and rear bearing housings.

      2. Install the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-472) and the two nuts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-474) to attach the bracket to the front bearing housing.

      3. Install the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-475), the two washers V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-476) and the two nuts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-477) to attach the bracket to the rear bearing housing.

      5. Torque the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-475) to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

    4. Measure the torque that is required to turn the crankshaft assembly. This must not be more than 200 lbfin (22.60 Nm).

      2. Locate the front and rear bearing housing feet on the dowels in the HP compressor front case.

      3. Install the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-762) to attach the rear bearing housing to the HP compressor front case.

      4. Pre SBE 72-0189 : Install the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-604) and the bracket V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-720) to attach the front bearing housing to the HP compressor front case.

      5. SBE 72-0189 : Install the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-604) and the bracket V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-720) to attach the front bearing housing to the HP compressor front case.

      6. Torque the four bolts to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20.00 Nm to 25.00 Nm).

      1. Install the bearing housing support bracket V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-470) on to the front and rear bearing housings.

      2. Install the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-472) and the two nuts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-474) to attach the bracket to the front bearing housing.

      3. Install the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-475) and the two washers V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-476) to attach the bracket to the rear bearing housing.

      4. Torque the two nuts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-474) to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

      5. Torque the two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-475) to 85 lbfin to 105 lbfin (10.00 Nm to 12.00 Nm).

    4. Measure the torque that is required to turn the crankshaft assembly. This must not be more than 200 lbfin (22.60 Nm).

      1. Install the VIGV crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-500) and the stage 3 VSV crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-560) on the crankshaft.

      2. Attach the VIGV and stage 3 VSV crank levers to the crankshaft with two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-564), two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-562) and two nuts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-563).

      3. Torque the bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-564) and the nuts to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20.00 Nm to 25.00 Nm).

      1. Install the stage 4 VSV crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-520) on the crankshaft.

      2. Attach the stage 4 VSV crank lever to the crankshaft with two bolts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-523) and two nuts V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-522).

      3. Torque the nuts to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20.00 Nm to 25.00 Nm).

Install the IAE 1R18423 Rigging pin 4 off or one IAE 1R18892 Rigging pin 1 off, IAE 1R18893 Riggingpin 1 off, IAE 1R18894 Rigging pin 1 off and IAE 1R18895 Rigging pin 1 off in the VSV actuating ring brackets. Install one pin in each stage of the VSV. Install the rigging pins in the high speed positions.

      3. Locate the left hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34,01-190) on the spindle of lower VIGV actuating ring.

      4. Install the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-180) on to the spindle. Torque the nut to 290 lbfin to 370 lbfin (33 Nm to 42 Nm). Install the cotter pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-178) through the nut and the spindle to safety the assembly. Follow the procedure given in Step to install the cotter pin.

      5. Locate the right hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-195) in the VIGV crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-500) on the crankshaft.

      6. Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-184) and the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-182) to attach right hand bearing to the VIGV crank lever. To align the right hand bearing bolt hole and the VIGV crank lever bolt hole adjust the length of the control rod.

      7. Torque the nut to 170 lbfin to 210 lbfin (19 Nm to 24 Nm). Install the cotter pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-181) through the nut and bolt to safety the assembly. Follow the procedure given in Step to install the cotter pin.

      1. Procedure to adjust the length of a control rod.

      2. Remove the lockwire from the vane actuator control rod.

      3. Release the two locking nuts. One of the two locking nuts has a left hand thread.

      4. Adjust the length of the control rod, until the bolt can be easily installed. Do not let the bearing turn as you turn the control rod.

      5. With the bolt installed examine the sighting holes to make sure the control rod is in safety.

      6. Tighten and then torque the two locking nuts to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      7. Examine the spherical bearings for angular allowance. Refer to view on A.

      8. Safety the two locknuts with CoMat 02-126 LOCKWIRE. One of the two locking nuts has a left hand thread.

      1. Install the stage 3 control rod assembly V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-250).

      2. Locate the left hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-240) in the connector on the lower stage 3 actuating ring HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 03-540).

      3. Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-236) and the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-232) to attach the control to the connector.

      4. Torque the nut to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      5. Locate the right hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-245) in the stage 3 crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-560).

      6. Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-234), the two spacers V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-237), the washer V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-233) and the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-230).

      7. Torque the nut to 170 lbfin to 210 lbfin (19 Nm to 24 Nm). Install the cotter pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-228). Follow the procedure given in Step to install the cotter pin.

      8. If it is necessary to adjust the length of the control rod refer to the procedure given in step C.

      1. Install the stage 4 control rod V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-300).

      5. Locate the right hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-295) on the stage 4 crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-520).

      6. Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-284), the two spacers V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-281), the washer V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-283) and the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-280).

      7. Torque the nut to 170 lbfin to 210 lbfin (19 Nm to 24 Nm). Install the cotter pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-278) through the nut and bolt. Follow the procedure given in Step to install the cotter pin.

      8. If it is necessary to adjust the length of the control rod refer to the procedure given in step C.

      6. Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-336), the two spacers V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-333), the washer V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-331) and the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34,01-330).

      7. Torque the nut to 170 lbfin to 210 lbfin (19 Nm to 24 Nm). Install the cotter pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-328) through the nut and bolt. Follow the procedure given in Step to install the cotter pin.

To align the right hand bearing bolt hole and the VIGV crank lever bolt hole adjust the length of the control rod.

      7. Torque the nut to 170 lbfin to 210 lbfin (19 Nm to 24 Nm). Install the cotter pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-181) through the nut and bolt to safety the assembly. Follow the procedure given in Step to install the cotter pin.

Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-372) and the washer V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-374) to attach the retaining pin to the crankshaft.

      7. Torque the bolt to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4 Nm to 5 Nm).

      8. If it is necessary to adjust the length of the control rod refer to the procedure given in step C.

      4. Torque the nut to 290 to 370 lbf-in (33 to 42 N.m).

      5. Locate the right hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-195) in the VIGV crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-500) on the crankshaft.

      6. Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-184) and the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-182) to attach right hand bearing to the VIGV crank lever. To align the right hand bearing bolt hole and the VIGV crank lever bolt hole adjust the length of the control rod.

      7. Torque the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-182) to 170 lbfin to 210 lbfin (19 Nm to 24 Nm). Install the cotter pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-181) through the nut and bolt to safety the assembly. Follow the procedure given in Step to install the cotter pin.

      1. Procedure to adjust the length of a control rod.

      2. Remove the lockwire from the vane actuator control rod.

      3. Release the two locking nuts. One of the two locking nuts has a left hand thread.

      4. Adjust the length of the control rod, until the bolt can be easily installed. Do not let the bearing turn as you turn the control rod.

      5. Locate the right hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-245) in the stage 3 crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-560).

      6. Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-234), the two spacers V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-237), the washer V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-233) and the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-230).

      7. Torque the nut to 170 lbfin to 210 lbfin (19 Nm to 24 Nm). Install the cotter pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-228). Follow the procedure given in Step to install the cotter pin.

      8. If it is necessary to adjust the length of the control rod refer to the procedure given in step C.

      5. Locate the right hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-295) on the stage 4 crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-520).

      6. Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-284), the two spacers V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-281), the washer V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-283) and the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-280).

      7. Torque the nut to 170 lbfin to 210 lbfin (19 Nm to 24 Nm). Install the cotter pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34,01-278) through the nut and bolt. Follow the procedure given in Step to install the cotter pin.

      8. If it is necessary to adjust the length of the control rod refer to the procedure given in step C.

      1. Install the stage 5 control rod V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-350).

      2. Locate the left hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-340) in the connector on the lower stage 5 actuating ring HPC Variable Stator Vane Actuation System (72-41-34, 05-540).

      3. Install the bolt (72-41-34 01-334) and the nut V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-332) to attach the control rod to the connector.

      4. Torque the nut to 180 lbfin to 220 lbfin (20 Nm to 25 Nm).

      5. Locate the right hand bearing V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-345) on the stage 5 crank lever V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-540).

      6. Install the retaining pin V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-370) to attach the control rod to the stage 5 crank lever. Install the bolt V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-372) and the washer V2500-A5-72-41-34-01A-941A-D (72-41-34, 01-374) to attach the retaining pin to the crankshaft.

      7. Torque the bolt to 36 lbfin to 45 lbfin (4 Nm to 5 Nm).

      8. If it is necessary to adjust the length of the control rod refer to the procedure given in step C.

      1. Install the actuator control rod ACTUATING MECHANISM HP COMPRESSOR VARIABLE VANES (72-41-34, 07-100).

      2. Locate the right hand bearing ACTUATING MECHANISM HP COMPRESSOR VARIABLE VANES (72-41-34, 07-095) on the actuator control rod position on the crankshaft.

      3. Install the bolt ACTUATING MECHANISM HP COMPRESSOR VARIABLE VANES (72-41-34, 07-081), the washer ACTUATING MECHANISM HP COMPRESSOR VARIABLE VANES (72-41-34, 07-080), and the nut ACTUATING MECHANISM HP COMPRESSOR VARIABLE VANES (72-41-34, 07-082).

      4. Torque the nut to 290 to 370 lbf-in (33 to 42 N.m).

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-154 Install a Split Cotter Pin

    2. CAUTION

      DO NOT TIGHTEN THE NUT MORE THAN THE MAXIMUM SPECIFIED TORQUE LOAD.

      CAUTION

      DO NOT LOOSEN THE NUT TO ALIGN THE SPLIT COTTER PIN HOLE WITH THE NUT SLOT.

      Refer to Figure.

      1. Torque the nut.

      2. Tighten the nut to the minimum specified torque load given in the procedure. If necessary, tighten the nut some more to align the split cotter pin hole with the nut slot.

      3. Replace the nut if the maximum specified torque load is reached before the split cotter pin hole and the nut slot are aligned.

    3. Install the split cotter pin, refer to Figure.or the acceptable conditions.

    4. Discard used split cotter pins. Only use new split cotter pins.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-135 Do a Check on the Stator Vanes Angular Travel

    2. NOTE

      This procedure is to make sure that the full vane angular travel is satisfactory on each stage.

      Remove all the rigging pins installed in Step.

    3. Rotate the crankshaft assembly to the low speed position - the stator vanes are in the closed position. At the rigging pin bracket on each stage of VSV install a rigging pin. Make sure the rigging pins go in to the HP compressor front case.

    4. Remove the rigging pins installed in step B.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-136 Remove the Protective Cover from the HP Compressor Assembly

    2. Remove IAE 1R18252 Protective cover or IAE 1R19552 Protective cover from the HP compressor assembly.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-137 Measure the Position of the HP Compressor Rear Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure.

      1. Install the IAE 1R18251 Axial measuring fixture 1 off on to the HP compressor assembly.

      2. Use the correct lifting equipment and lift the axial measuring fixture above the HP compressor assembly.

      3. Carefully lower the axial measuring fixture on to the HP compressor rear shaft and outer case. Do not let the fixture damage the HP compressor rear shaft and outer case as it is being lowered on to them.

      4. Lower the axial measuring fixture until its front flange touches the rear flange of the HP compressor rear outer case. Align the six bolt holes in the front flange of the fixture with six bolt holes in the rear flange of the HP compressor rear outer case.

      5. Install the six bolts, six nuts and twelve washers, part of the axial measuring fixture, through the aligned six holes.

      6. Tighten the six nuts.

      7. Remove the lifting equipment.

      1. Adjust the position of the bush, part of the axial measuring fixture.

      2. Turn the three bolts identified D, until the bush touches the HP compressor rear shaft at flange E. Make sure the bush touches the flange squarely.

      1. Measure the gap between the pins A and B.

      2. Install the IAE 1R18294 Clock holder 1 off on to the axial measuring fixture at pin A.

      3. Align the plunger of the dial gage, parts of the clock holder, on the head of pin A.

      4. Apply a load to the dial gage to turn the dial gage needle two revolutions.

      5. Set the dial gage to zero.

      6. Move the clock holder on the axial measuring fixture and carefully align the plunger of the dial gage on pin B.

      7. Write down and record the value shown on the dial gage. This should be 0.023 to 0.068 in. (0.58 to 1.73 mm).

      1. Remove the axial measuring fixture.

      2. Install the correct lifting equipment as given in Step.

      3. Remove the six bolts, six nuts and twelve washers which attach the axial measuring fixture to the HP compressor rear outer case rear flange.

      4. Remove the axial measuring fixture. Do not let the fixture damage the HP compressor rear shaft as it is removed.

    1. SUBTASK 72-41-00-440-139 Lubricate the Variable Stator Vane Mechanism

    2. Refer to Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure.

    3. Rotate the VSV crankshaft to the low speed stop using a suitable wrench.

      1. Apply CoMat 10-108 HIGH PERFORMANCE PENETRATING LUBRICANT WITH TEFLON (R) to each variable stator vane lever spindle at location A for the VIGV stage thru to stage 6. Refer to Figure to illustrate the typical area.

      2. WARNING

        YOU MUST USE THE CORRECT PERSONNEL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT WHEN HANDLING AND APPLYING THE LUBRICANT, CoMat 10-108 HIGH PERFORMANCE PENETRATING LUBRICANT WITH TEFLON (R).

        CAUTION

        DO NOT APPLY LUBRICANT TO THE VSV ACTUATOR.

        CAUTION

        DO NOT LUBRICATE THE CRANKSHAFT BEARINGS.

        NOTE

        These bearings are designed to run dry. Lubrication of the bearings shall cause "swelling" of the bearing fabroid material, resulting in tightness of operation.

        Apply the lubricant using an appropriately sized brush or hand pump spray. Not an aerosol.

      1. Apply CoMat 10-108 HIGH PERFORMANCE PENETRATING LUBRICANT WITH TEFLON (R) to each pin at location B that connects the VSV levers to the unison ring. Refer to Figure to illustrate the typical area.

      2. WARNING

        YOU MUST USE THE CORRECT PERSONNEL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT WHEN HANDLING AND APPLYING THE LUBRICANT, CoMat 10-108 HIGH PERFORMANCE PENETRATING LUBRICANT WITH TEFLON (R).

        Apply the lubricant using an appropriately sized brush or hand pump spray. Not an aerosol.

      1. Apply CoMat 10-108 HIGH PERFORMANCE PENETRATING LUBRICANT WITH TEFLON (R) to the exposed areas of all unison ring centralizing pads, location G on the compressor cases. Refer to Figure.

      2. WARNING

        YOU MUST USE THE CORRECT PERSONNEL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT WHEN HANDLING AND APPLYING THE LUBRICANT, CoMat 10-108 HIGH PERFORMANCE PENETRATING LUBRICANT WITH TEFLON (R).
