Procedure

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-051 Remove the Soft Dirt and the Dust

      1. Remove the soft dirt and the dust. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-26-300-503

      2. Do not soak use a soft bristle brush or swab.

      1. Dry.

      2. Use clean dry air blast or clean lint-free cloth.

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-052 Remove the Seals and Bumper Pads

      1. Soak to remove the seals and bumper pads. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-04-300-503

      2. Soak until the rubber is removed. Use CoMat 01-171 RUBBER DIGESTER.

      1. Wash.

      2. Cold water.

    2. Do the step A and B again, if necessary.

      1. Dry.

      2. Use clean dry air blast.

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-104 Remove the Paint

    2. Remove the grease. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-03-300-503

    3. Remove the paint. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-60-110-503

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-054 Remove the Dry Film Lubricant (PL 237)

      1. Remove the dry film lubricant. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-11-29-300-503

      2. Remove the dry film lubricant.

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-105 Prepare the Anodize Coating for Removing

    2. NOTE

      Do this procedure only if more cleaning is required to complete the inspection requirement.
      Do this procedure if SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-107 is required to remove the red primer paint.

      Remove the locating pin. Refer to TASK 72-31-11-300-005 (REPAIR-005) VRS1010

    3. Remove the seals and bumper pads. Refer to Step

    4. Remove the screw thread insert. Refer to TASK 72-31-11-300-014 (REPAIR-014) VRS1013 or TASK 72-31-11-300-023 (REPAIR-023) VRS1017

    5. Remove the dry film lubricant. Refer to Step

    6. Remove the heat resistant ES coating. Refer to SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-053

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-107 Remove the Paint (Red Primer)

      1. CAUTION

        CARE MUST BE TAKEN NOT TO DAMAGE PARENT MATERIAL BY EXCESSIVE BLAST.

        NOTE

        Do this procedure only if more cleaning is required to complete the inspection requirement.
        Anodize coating must be removed if this procedure is done. Refer to SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-073 and SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-106.

        Mask the area where the paint is not applied.

      1. Remove the paint. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-12-06-120-501

      2. Wet abrasive blast. Use grit size 500 or more fine grit.

    2. Remove the masking tape.

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-073 Remove the Anodize Coating

    2. NOTE

      Do this procedure only if more cleaning is required to complete the inspection requirement.
      This SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-073 is an alternative to SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-106.
      Do this procedure if SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-107 is done to remove the red primer paint.

      Remove the anodize coating. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-58-330-501

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-106 Remove the Anodize Coating

    2. WARNING

      CHROMIC ACID SPRAY IS INJURIOUS IF INHALED, CAUSING ULCERS IN THE NOSE AND IN SOME CASES, PERFORATION OF THE NASAL SEPTUM. CHROMIC ACID SALTS AND SOLUTIONS IN CONTACT WITH THE SKIN MAY CAUSE CHROME SORES. ULCERS MAY BE FORMED IF CHROMIC ACID GETS INTO CUTS AND ABRASIONS.

      WARNING

      CHROMIC ACID SOLUTION MUST NEVER BE USED UNLESS THE FUME EXTRACTION PLANT IS IN OPERATION AND IS FULLY SERVICEABLE.

      WARNING

      BARRIER CREAM SHOULD BE APPLIED TO THE HANDS AND FOREARMS BEFORE STARTING WORK.

      WARNING

      PROTECTIVE GLOVES, OVERALLS, GOGGLES OR FACE VISOR AND SAFETY SHOES OR BOOTS MUST BE WORN.

      WARNING

      SMOKING AND THE CONSUMPTION OF FOOD NEAR THE CHROMIC ACID BATH ARE PROHIBITED.

      WARNING

      CUTS AND ABRASIONS, WHICH APPEAR NOT TO BE HEALING READILY SHOULD BE REPORTED, WITHOUT DELAY, TO THE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT.

      WARNING

      CHROMIC ACID IS STRONGLY OXIDIZING AND ENTAILS SOME FIRE RISK, POSSIBLE SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION OF ORGANIC MATERIALS, SUCH AS RAGS AND SAWDUST, WHICH HAVE ABSORBED CHROMIC ACID SOLUTION. SUCH CONTAMINATED MATERIALS SHOULD BE IMMERSED IN A SOLUTION OF SODIUM BISULPHATED TO NEUTRALISE THE CHROMIC ACID, THE SOLUTION SHOULD THEN BE DISPOSED OF AS SPECIAL WASTE. THE SOLID MATERIAL SHOULD THEN BE RINSED WITH WATER PRIOR TO DISPOSAL.

      CAUTION

      THE PARTS MUST ONLY STAY IN THE SOLUTION FOR THE TIMES SPECIFIED IN THE ENGINE MANUAL. THIS IS TO PREVENT INTERGRANULAR ATTACK OR A DECREASE IN FATIGUE STRENGTH.

      NOTE

      Do this procedure only if more cleaning is required to complete the inspection requirement.
      This SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-106 is an alternative to SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-073.
      Do this procedure if SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-107 is done to remove the red primer paint.

      Chromic acid solution.

      1. Phosphoric acid solution.

        1. WARNING

          OPERATORS MUST WEAR THE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING PROVIDED, INCLUDING RUBBER GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION.

          WARNING

          TREAT EYE SPLASHES IMMEDIATELY BY PROLONGED WATER IRRIGATION OF THE EYES AND THEN GET IMMEDIATE MEDICAL TREATMENT.

          Clean the part.

        2. Soak the part in solution for 10 to 30 minutes, at temperature of 122 to 140 deg F (50 to 60 deg C). Use CoMat 01-339 ALKALI CLEANER (GENERAL PURPOSE) primary cleaner of 15 to 30 per cent volume.

        1. NOTE

          If water break is found, go to step (1) again.

          Wash.

        2. Clean hot and/or cold water.

        1. Remove the anodize coating.

        2. Soak in the solution for 5 to 15 minutes, at temperature of 176 to 212 deg F (80 to 100 deg C). Make up the solution. Use CoMat 01-023 CHROMIUM TRIOXIDE CrO3(CHROM.ACID) chromium trioxide 2.0 to 3.3 oz/gal (15 to 25 g/l), CoMat 01-016 PHOSPHORIC ACID H3PO4 phosphoric acid 4.7 to 8.0 oz/gal (35 to 60 g/l).

      2. Remove the part from the solution.

        1. NOTE

          As necessary, soak the part into the hot water.

          Wash.

        2. Clean the part in a flow of clean, cold water.

        1. NOTE

          Make sure that the anodize coating is removed. If it is not removed, go toStep

          Dry.

        2. Use clean dry air blast.

    1. SUBTASK 72-31-11-110-108 Clean the Annulus Fillers

      1. NOTE

        Do this procedure if Step is done to remove the red primer paint.

        Clean and etch the part. Refer to the SPM TASK 70-33-08-100-501, SUBTASK 70-33-08-100-003

      2. Etch the part in the nitric acid or hydrofluoric acid solution for max 30 seconds.
