General

Fig/item numbers in parentheses in the procedure agree with those used in the IPC. Only the primary Fig/item numbers are used. For the service bulletin alpha variants refer to the IPC.

For standard torque data and procedures, refer to the SPM TASK 70-41-01-400-501, SPM TASK 70-41-00-400-501 and SPM TASK 70-41-01-400-501.

Special torque data and assembly tolerances are included in the procedure.

Lubricate all threads and abutment faces of nuts and bolts with CoMat 10-077 APPROVED ENGINE OILS, unless other lubricants are referred to in the procedure.

To identify, lubricate and install seal rings, refer to the SPM TASK 70-44-01-400-501.

The number for each radial location must be identified in a clockwise direction. These start at the engine top position when you look from the rear of the engine, unless stated differently in the procedure.

Refer to TASK 72-50-00-990-501 (DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION-001) for a sectional view of the LP Turbine module.

For oil service tube installation reference to the SPM TASK 70-41-00-400-501 for general torque tightening procedures.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-062-A00 Install the Carbon Seal to the LP Turbine Shaft, , Detail A (Pre SBE 72-0142 and Pre SBE 72-0162)

    3. Install the carbon seal to the rear end of the LP Turbine shaft. Make sure that the groove of the carbon seal points to the rear.

    4. Install the IAE 1F10033 Hydraulic installation pusher 1 off on the rear end of the LP Turbine shaft. Attach the reaction adapter (part of the hydraulic installation pusher) to the rear thread of the LP Turbine shaft.

    5. Tighten the knurled nut (part of the hydraulic installation pusher).

    6. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the pusher.

    7. Operate the hydraulic pump to move the carbon seal in to the correct position.

      1. Remove the tools as follows:

      2. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the hydraulic installation pusher.

      3. Release the knurled nut and remove the hydraulic installation pusher.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-062-B00 Install the Carbon Seal to the LP Turbine Shaft, , Detail A (SBE 72-0142 and Pre SBE 72-0162)

    3. SBE 72-0142: Provide a new carbon seal for the No. 5 bearing compartment

    4. Install the carbon seal to the rear end of the LP Turbine shaft. Make sure that the groove of the carbon seal points to the rear.

    5. Install the IAE 1F10033 Hydraulic installation pusher 1 off on the rear end of the LP Turbine shaft. Attach the reaction adapter (part of the hydraulic installation pusher) to the rear thread of the LP Turbine shaft.

    6. Tighten the knurled nut (part of the hydraulic installation pusher).

    7. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the pusher.

    8. Operate the hydraulic pump to move the carbon seal in to the correct position.

      1. Remove the tools as follows:

      2. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the hydraulic installation pusher.

      3. Release the knurled nut and remove the hydraulic installation pusher.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-062-C00 Install the Carbon Seal to the LP Turbine Shaft, , Detail A (SBE 72-0142 and SBE 72-0162)

    3. SBE 72-0162: Introduce a new No. 5 bearing face seal

      NOTE

      The old No. 5 bearing face seals have a radial thickness of 0.338 in. to 0.346 in. (8.585 mm to 8.788 mm). Do not use these seals.
    4. Do an inspection of the No. 5 bearing face seal to make sure that the radial thickness is 0.234 in. to 0.238 in. (5.944 mm to 6.045 mm).

    5. Assemble the No. 5 bearing carbon seal.

    6. Install the carbon seal to the rear end of the LP Turbine shaft. Make sure that the groove of the carbon seal points to the rear.

    7. Install the IAE 1F10033 Hydraulic installation pusher 1 off on the rear end of the LP Turbine shaft. Attach the reaction adapter (part of the hydraulic installation pusher) to the rear thread of the LP Turbine shaft.

    8. Tighten the knurled nut (part of the hydraulic installation pusher).

    9. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the pusher.

    10. Operate the hydraulic pump to move the carbon seal in to the correct position.

      1. Remove the tools as follows:

      2. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the hydraulic installation pusher.

      3. Release the knurled nut and remove the hydraulic installation pusher.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-062-D00 Install the Carbon Seal to the LP Turbine Shaft, , Detail A (SBE 72-0162 and Pre SBE 72-0142)

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. SBE 72-0162: Introduce a new No. 5 bearing face seal

    4. Assemble the No. 5 bearing carbon seal assembly.

    5. Install the carbon seal to the rear end of the LP Turbine shaft. Make sure that the groove of the carbon seal points to the rear.

    6. Install the IAE 1F10033 Hydraulic installation pusher 1 off on the rear end of the LP Turbine shaft. Attach the reaction adapter (part of the hydraulic installation pusher) to the rear thread of the LP Turbine shaft.

    7. Tighten the knurled nut (part of the hydraulic installation pusher).

    8. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the pusher.

    9. Operate the hydraulic pump to move the carbon seal in to the correct position.

      1. Remove the tools as follows:

      2. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the hydraulic installation pusher.

      3. Release the knurled nut and remove the hydraulic installation pusher.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-063 Install the No. 5 Bearing Inner Race (Pre SBE 72-0142 and SBE 72-0142)

    2. SBE 72-0142: Provide a new carbon seal for the No. 5 bearing compartment

    3. Heat the inner race of the No. 5 bearing to approximately 212 deg F (100 deg C).

    4. CAUTION

      USE GLOVES TO INSTALL THE HOT INNER RACE OF THE No. 5 BEARING.

      Pre SBE 72-0142: Install the inner race of the No. 5 bearing to the LP Turbine shaft. Refer to Figure, Detail B. SBE 72-0142: Install the inner race of the No. 5 bearing to the LP Turbine shaft. Refer to Figure, Detail B.

    5. Install the IAE 1F10034 Hydraulic installation pusher 1 off on the rear end of the LP Turbine shaft. Attach the reaction adapter (part of the hydraulic installation pusher) to the rear thread of the LP Turbine shaft.

    6. Tighten the knurled nut (part of the hydraulic installation pusher).

    7. Connect the IAE 1F10026 Hydraulic hand pump 1 off to the coupler of the pusher.

    8. Operate the hydraulic pump to move the inner race of the No. 5 bearing into the correct position.

      1. Remove the tools as follows:

      2. Disconnect the hydraulic pump from the hydraulic installation pusher.

      3. Release the knurled nut and remove the hydraulic installation pusher.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-064 Install the Guide Pogo Stick to the LP Turbine Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Install the IAE 1F10074 Guide pogo stick 1 off in to the inner diameter of the LP Turbine shaft. Use an applicable webbing sling.

    4. Make sure that the centering diameter of the guide pogo stick is installed correctly to the LP Turbine shaft. Turn clockwise the screw at the rear end of the guide pogo stick to attach the pogo stick to the LP Turbine shaft.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-066 Install the Removal/Installation Fixture to the Turbine Exhaust Case

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Attach hoist equipment to the upper supports of the IAE 1F10073 remove/installation fixture 1 off.

    4. Install the remove/installation fixture to the rear flange of the turbine exhaust case. Attach the fixture with the 13 screws and washers. Tighten the screws.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-067 Install the Turbine Exhaust Case to the LP Turbine Case

    2. Refer to Figure and Figure.

    3. Release the turbine exhaust case and lift it from the IAE 1F10178 Storage and Turnover adapter 1 off.

    4. Install the turbine exhaust case to the IAE 1F10074 Guide pogo stick 1 off front end down.

    5. Move the turbine exhaust case down to the rear flange of the LP Turbine case. Align the dowel pins.

    6. Turn the jackscrew (part of the IAE 1F10073 remove/installation fixture) clockwise to the stop position. Safety the jackscrew in the position with the IAE 1F10076 Locking collar 1 off.

    7. CAUTION

      MAKE SURE THAT THE STAGE 6 AIR SEAL, THE No. 5 BEARING AND THE CARBON SEAL ENGAGE CORRECTLY.

      Turn the jackscrew counterclockwise until the flanges of the LP Turbine case and the turbine exhaust case fit correctly.

      1. CAUTION

        HOLD THE BOLTS IN THEIR POSITION WHEN YOU INSTALL THE NUTS ON TO THE BOLTS. DO NOT TURN THE BOLTS OR MAKE TO-AND-FRO MOVEMENTS. THE TURBINE EXHAUST CASE/LP TURBINE CASE AND/OR THE BOLTS CAN BE DAMAGED BY SCORES.

        Install the 16 brackets and attach the 114 bolts and nuts which lock the turbine exhaust case to the LP Turbine case as follows. Refer to Figure.

      2. CAUTION

        INCORRECT ASSEMBLY OF THE BOLT AND NUT CAN CAUSE OIL TUBE DAMAGE.

        Assemble bolt at hole No.75 in opposite direction to give more space between bolt end and oil tube.

    8. Torque the nuts to 85* lbfin to 95* lbfin (9.60* Nm to 10.73* Nm).

      1. Remove the tools from the engine as follows.

      2. Remove the locking collar and the remove/installation fixture.

        NOTE

        If the rear lock nut is not installed, continue with SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-068.
      3. Remove the guide pogo stick.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-076 Install the Oil Jet of the No. 5 Bearing

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Install ENGINE-NO.5 BEARING OIL JET AND FILTER (72-50-51, 01-120) toroidal sealing rings 2 off on both ends of the oil transfer tube.

    4. Install one end of the oil transfer tube in to the ID of the oil jet. Push the transfer tube in to oil jet in order to permit the subsequent installation.

    5. Install the oil jet and align the eccentric diameter with the hole on the front flange of the No. 5 bearing compartment.

    6. Push the transfer tube from the rear with IAE 1F10153 Installation rod 1 off until it is fully installed in to the flange of the No. 5 bearing housing.

    7. Install the oil filter in to the threaded hole of the oil jet. Torque the oil filter to 371.736 lbfin (42.0 Nm). Use IAE 1F10182 Removal/installation drier 1 off.

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-078 Connect the Oil Feed Tube of the No. 5 Bearing

    2. Refer to Figure.

      NOTE

      Make sure mating surfaces are completely free from debris, grease or oil. Use shop inspection mirror or adequate tool to view mating surfaces.

      NOTE

      Prior to fit make sure no internal blockages, carbon/coke or debris exist on the ID of the parts (tubes, jets and fittings).

      NOTE

      Fit pressure tube to mating surface (without seal) in case. Make sure there is a 0.001 in. (0.0254 mm) gap maximum after tightening tube for fit check. Fit up between case face and tube flange (Reference TASK 72-50-53-200, step 28).

      Prior to final assembly:

    3. Install ENGINE-EXHAUST CASE AND FITTINGS (72-50-53, 01-390) metallic seal 1 off to the flange of the oil feed tube. Install the oil feed tube to the No. 5 bearing compartment.

    4. Install the three bolts which attach the oil feed tube to the No. 5 bearing compartment. Torque the bolts in increments of 25 lbfin to 101.784 lbfin (2.82 Nm to 11.5 Nm).

    5. Install the bracket on the inner support of the case. Install the two bolts and locknuts and torque to 101.784 lbfin (11.5 Nm).

    6. Install the clamp to the oil feed tube. Attach the clamp to the bracket with the bolt and locknut. Torque to 17.701 lbfin (2.0 Nm).

    7. Install and align the bracket to the external flanges of the oil feed tube and case.

    8. Install the two bolts and locknuts which attach the bracket to the external flange of the case. Torque to 35.403 lbfin (4.0 Nm).

      1. Install the bolt and locknut which attach the oil feed tube to the bracket. Torque to 101.784 lbfin (11.5 Nm).

      2. WARNING

        BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE COMPRESSED AIR. PUT ON PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND GOGGLES.

    9. Prove No. 5 pressure tube passage is clear by blowing air through from the outer case fitting and make sure it comes out of the jets in the compartment.

  1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-087

    1. SUBTASK 72-50-00-430-068-A00 Install the Rear Lock Nut to the LP Turbine Shaft

    2. Refer to Figure.

    3. Install the rear lock nut to the LP Turbine shaft and hand-tighten the nut.

    4. Attach the IAE 1F10037 Wrench support 1 off to the inner rear flange of the turbine exhaust case.

    5. Install the IAE 1F10038 Torque wrench 1 off through the wrench support. Engage the torque wrench with the rear lock nut.

    6. Install the IAE 1F10039 Anti-torque adapter 1 off through the torque wrench. Lock the anti-torque adapter to the LP Turbine shaft.

    7. Install the IAE 1F10016 Mechanical wrench 1 off to the torque wrench. Safety the anti-torque adapter to the mechanical wrench with the IAE 1F10040 Anchor wrench plate 1 off.

    8. Operate the mechanical wrench and torque the rear lock nut to 4000 lbfin to 6000 lbfin (452 Nm to 678 Nm).

    9. Put an angle of turn of five to eight degrees to the rear lock nut.

    10. Operate the mechanical wrench to release the torque until the torque value is zero.

    11. Torque the rear lock nut to 4000 lbfin to 6000 lbfin (452 Nm to 678 Nm) again.

    12. Make a correlation mark between the IAE 1F10016 Mechanical wrench and the IAE 1F10038 Torque wrench.

    13. Put an angle of turn or five to eight degrees to the rear lock nut.

    14. Do Step again.

    15. Do Step again and check the correlation mark. The correlation mark must be within two degrees maximum on the same place.

    16. If the correlation mark is within limit, apply last angle of turn of five to eight degrees to the rear lock nut.

    17. If the correlation mark is out of limit, delete the correlation mark and do Step to M. again until correlation mark is within limit.

    18. Apply last angle of turn of five to eight degrees to the rear lock nut.

    19. Align the slot of the rear lock nut with the slot of the LP Turbine shaft rear end. The alignment of the rear lock nut must be in torque direction.

      1. Remove the tools from the engine as follows:

      2. Remove the anchor wrench plate and the mechanical wrench.

      3. Disengage the lock mechanism of the anti-torque adapter and remove the adapter.

      4. Remove the torque wrench.

      5. Remove the wrench support.

    20. Safety the rear lock nut with the locking ring and the internal retaining ring.
